“Don’t talk about me like that!” David called out as he laughed. “That’s just rude.”

“But we’ll slowly get used to each other,” Eva said.

David rushed over to her and stole her phone. “Caro, you should see these two. Eva sits on the landing, and Ruchti wanders over, wagging his tail, then lays his head on her lap. He’s completely written me off. And she pets him on the neck, but she won’t pet mine.”

Eva grabbed the phone back. “Now he’s jealous of his own dog.”

Leonie yelled from inside the house. “Auntie, get off the phone and help us!”

“OK, you heard that, I have to hang up. But we want to hear about your honeymoon in Thailand. And maybe you can visit us here sometime.”

“Watch out—I could very well take you up on that!”

Eva said good-bye and walked to the van. Leonie and Jonas were leaning against the loading ramp, making out. “Well now, that’s what I call a good work ethic.”

“Envious?” David asked. “We can change that.” He pressed a little kiss on her mouth and then laughed. “I guess we should tackle the move first; otherwise, everyone will have to sleep on the floor tonight.”
