“It is not enough. What you offer is not enough for me. It

“It is!” she protested.
“No. I will not hide you away, hide our children away. I
will not visit when I am free, when I am able. I am your home, Beatrice. And
you are mine.”
“Simon?” she asked and he could see the confusion and the
dawning wonder in her fathomless brown eyes, in the smile that hovered on her trembling
lips, in the dimple that winked.
“Marry me,” he whispered against her soft lips. “We can do
it quietly, here. In the garden by the fountain. Marry me and be my family, my
place in the world.”
“Oh Simon, are you certain?” she whispered. “I am your
uncle’s illegitimate daughter. I will never be accepted in your world. Your
family…your peers…they will not accept me.”
“You are my world. You are my family. You are my love. You
will be my wife.” Simon waited.
Beatrice only gazed up at him with a soft smile.
“Say it,” he whispered.
“I will be your wife.”
