I swallowed back my panic, trying to stop my heart thundering. I pushed at Rocky’s chest. “I can’t,” I said. My mind whirled, trying to think of something I could do to stop this. “I can’t... Silas...”
“Break up with him,” Rocky said. He drew me close, turning me. My back met with the wall. I pushed at him, but he pinned my wrists to the wall. He dropped his head close to mine. I twisted my head away. His lips met with my ear. “You’re my kind of girl, Sang. You and I, we belong together.”
“No,” I said, although my voice came out in a squeak. I twisted the phone in my hand, trying to find a button to push to call up one of the guys. “Rocky, let go.”
Rocky’s lips met with my ear. He kissed, then grazed his lips across my jaw line. “Just let me show you. I’ve seen the way you look at me. Those goddamn beautiful eyes.” His hands collected my wrists, and my phone fell to the ground. He pinned my wrists over my head. With a hand free, he clasped my chin again, tilting me to expose my neck. “Trust me, sexy. I know what you need.”
“Rocky,” I called out. “Stop...” I twisted my body, trying to yank my wrists free.
Rocky’s lips dropped down to my neck. He mumbled something against me. His lips parted, and he drew the tender flesh into his mouth. His teeth grazed at my skin, and it felt like he was sucking hard at a spot on my neck.
My hands grasped for his, trying to use my nails. I shoved my body against his, trying to yank my neck away and out of his reach. “Stop,” I called out. “Rocky, don’t.”
Rocky collected my wrists, drawing them up over my head, keeping them pinned to the wall. His free hand shoved at me, pushing me back. He knocked a knee against my thigh, grinding his hips against mine. His mouth didn’t release my neck, only slid a little further down, still sucking at me.
“Stop,” I called again, desperate now. His lips made my skin crawl. I wanted to get out from under him. He was strong, holding me back easily. I twisted, shoved my body as hard as I could. I even tried to kick at him, but couldn’t lift my thighs as he held tight against me. “Let go!”
“Hey,” someone called, although from under Rocky, I couldn’t see. “What are you doing?”
Rocky released my neck, jerking his head around. “Jay?”
I rocked my head back. Jay stood in the doorway, his eyes wide, his fists clenched. “What the fuck are you doing?”
“Get out,” Rocky said. “It’s none of your business.”
“Let her go,” Jay said. He pulled his shoulders back, filling up the opening in the door. “What do you think you’re doing? Silas is...”
“She’s not going out with Silas anymore,” Rocky said.
“That’s not true,” I gasped, trying to find some composure. I couldn’t believe it. Jay was coming to help. My heart leapt. Thank goodness.
“I don’t care who she’s dating,” Jay said. “She’s saying stop. Get your hands off of her.”
“She doesn’t mean it.”
Jay stepped forward, his cold eyes wide. He pointed a finger at Rocky’s face. “I’m not covering for you again, Rocky. Let her go. Now.”
Rocky flinched. He held me for a moment longer, staring down his friend as if trying to dare him. When Jay didn’t back off, Rocky grunted, dropping his hands and taking a step back. He pointed back at Jay. “You’re a fucking ass, you know that? This is none of your business.”
Jay side-stepped, putting his back to the doorframe, making room in the doorway. He pointed to the hall. “Get out. Leave her alone.”
Rocky grunted and marched across the room and dashed downstairs.
I leaned against the wall, holding it for support. Breathing slowly. My cheeks burned. My eyes watered. I was embarrassed. My hand drifted up, gingerly touching at the spot Rocky had sucked at. The area felt tender. I didn’t know what he’d done to me. Was that a hickey?
“Are you okay?” Jay asked from the doorway. When I looked up at him, his eyes were still cool, but again I sensed something just under the surface. Concern.
“I’m fine,” I said. “Thank you.” And I meant it.
Jay’s mouth twitched. I wasn’t sure if it was the start of a smile or he was just flexing his lips. He bent over, picking up my phone and handed it to me. His eyes fell to my neck. “Let me see.”
I didn’t have a reason not to let him. He’d just saved me from Rocky. I didn’t know him very well, but I thought after all that, I could trust him better than I had Rocky. I tilted my head, releasing my fingers.
Jay frowned, shaking his head as he looked over the area. “Tell Silas someone hit you, okay? Like a girl did it. Don’t tell him Rocky did this.”
“Why should I lie?”
Jay’s eyes darkened. Suddenly his hand shot out, encircling my throat. He wasn’t squeezing. He was holding me, directing my attention. His eyes bore down into me. “Listen to me, Sang. Rocky’s a good guy, but the last couple of days, something’s been wrong with him. I don’t know what. He’s my friend, so I don’t want to see him go down. He’s been making mistakes. It’s not like him.”
I leaned my head back a little, looking at him. I thought I should be scared, but for some reason with Jay, even though he could easily squeeze or attack me like Rocky had done, I just sensed he wouldn’t. He wasn’t even trying. He just wanted to get his point across and make sure I listened. “Silas said the same thing the other day. What’s wrong with him?”
“I’m not sure—”
“Get your fucking hands off of her!” The voice that boomed at us shook me so hard that I was sure the wall I was up against was shaking, too.
There was a crash from the door and a fist flew right in front of my face. Jay fell back, releasing me and crumpling to the floor.
Silas stood in front of me, fist clenched, teeth bared, his deep brown eyes as wild as I’d ever seen them. “Don’t you fucking touch her!” He pulled a fist back, squaring off, and ready to hit Jay again before he even managed to get up.
“No wait,” I cried out, “Silas!”
Silas inched forward but stopped. His shoulders heaved, his angry glare settled on Jay, unforgiving. “Get out, Sang.”
“He wasn’t hurting me,” I said.
Silas turned on me, his eyes widened. The sleeves of his shirt were tight against his muscular arms, and the dips around his biceps flexed. He was raw power, looking so angry with those deep, dark eyes. “He had his hand around your throat.”
“It’s a long story,” I said. “But he wasn’t hurting me. Leave him alone.”
Jay held his hands up defensively in a stance that said he wasn’t going to pursue the fight. “I know what it looks like. I swear, Silas, I wasn’t going to hurt her,” Jay said. “I was...”
Silas waved him off. He turned, catching my arm and tugging me toward the door. “We’re leaving. Now.”
I stumbled behind him. “But Nathan...”
“He’s busy trying to get everyone to go home. You and I need to leave.”
I was going to try to say something else, but we were out in the hallway, and the music blared too loudly. I stayed behind him, grasping at his hand.
At first Silas waited for people to move, weaving around them. When we were stopped behind a crowd just a few feet from the front door, Silas started shoving people aside. A couple complained, but all Silas had to do was glare at them and everyone stepped back.
My heart swelled. Silas! He came for me. We were getting out of here. I hated to rely on the boys to fix a mess my sister started, but I wasn’t doing well within the mess of people, not after the crazy day we’d been through. I wanted to go away, anywhere, just to get out of here. I’d go home with Silas. I’d go with any of them.
Silas pulled open the front door, and stepped aside, pushing me through it.
“Hey!” Rocky stood on the front porch at the center of a crowd but stepped away as we made our way through. Rocky spread his hands out up in the air. “Silas! You made it.”
I almost growled at his audacity, acting like the episode upstairs hadn’t even happened. I squeezed Silas’s hand tighter, urging him on.
“I made it,” Silas said. “And now I’m leaving.” He nudged me toward the steps.
“Hey,” Rocky said. His smirk looked off from earlier. Lopsided. His eyes were glassy. Had he been drinking? “You taking my girl? Leave her alone.”
Silas froze, turning back. “What?”
Rocky smirked, strolling forward. “What do you mean, what? You were going to break up with her anyway. She told me she would go out with me.”
“Silas,” I said, “don’t listen to him.”
Silas’s face twitched. He snatched up my hand, heading toward the porch steps, purposely turning away from Rocky. “Come on.”
Rocky pushed someone aside and jumped the porch rail, landing on the concrete walkway that led around the house, cutting us off. “I said let her go.” He rounded his shoulders, clenching his fists. “She’s staying with me.”
Silas’s big brown eyes flashed, and I felt the same way, surprised Rocky would go this far. He was asking for a fight. Silas squared off his shoulders at him. “Get out of the way, Rocky.” He wasn’t backing away. He was giving Rocky a chance to get his senses together. Silas was a mass of muscle, and every bit Greek, and he was holding himself together with the last shred of willpower he contained.
“No.” Rocky shot out his hands, shoving Silas in the shoulders. “Let go of my girl.”
“She’s not yours,” Silas said, in a deeper tone. “Get out of our way.”
“North kisses her, and you keep her,” Rocky said. “Nathan sleeps with her, and you keep her. Now she told me she wanted to go out with me and you think you can walk off with her? I’m not done with her yet.”
Silas rolled his eyes, starting to step around Rocky. Rocky’s hand shot out once more, shoving at his shoulder. “Rocky,” he said in a flat tone. “That’s the second time you’ve touched me. There won’t be a third.” Silas tugged me until I was standing in front of him, his hands on my shoulders. “Sang is leaving with me. If you want her to tell you she’s coming with me, she will. I’m not taking her somewhere she doesn’t want to be.”
“If she wants to leave, she can come with me,” Rocky said. His hand shot out again, but this time he flung my hair back, revealing my neck. “We were just getting started.”
I was facing Rocky, but I felt Silas’s gaze on my neck, bearing down on the spot where Rocky had been sucking. I didn’t need a mirror to know the flesh was still tender and probably bright red.
In a split second, I was nudged aside and out of the way. Silas flung himself at Rocky. His massive fist shot out, making contact with Rocky’s face.
Rocky reeled back, covering his face with his hand. He held up one arm protectively as he stumbled. When he pulled his hand away, his lip was split and blood pooled and dripped down his chin. He pulled a fist back, ready to punch.
Silas launched himself at Rocky, taking him down in a tackle hard to the ground. After that, it was a flurry of fists and kicks as Silas barraged Rocky again and again.
“Silas!” I cried out his name. This was crazy. I’d seen fights before, but this was one on one, and Silas was dominating. It felt horrible, even though I didn’t blame him for getting angry. “Stop!”
Someone else was shouting, too, but it was different. Happy. A crowd was forming on the porch. People were clapping and hooting, encouraging them to keep fighting.
“Think you can touch her?” Silas bellowed at Rocky. “Fucking try it again, dumb shit.
Skatofatsa.
Touch her again and see what happens.
Poutanas gie
!” The Greek continued to flow from his mouth mixed in with the cursing, and I was pretty sure they were all the same words, more or less.
Rocky launched a fist at Silas’s face, but Silas caught it quickly, holding Rocky’s knuckles and crushing them as he pushed it back.
“You motherfucking shit,” Rocky screamed at him. “You’re going to call me out for what? You’re going to jump all over me for that? You let everyone else touch her.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” Silas said.
“She was going out with you and North took her in the closet. Nathan slept with her and you didn’t fight him. What now? I’m taking her off your hands.”
“Your teammates forced them into the closet. I heard the whole story. They weren’t even kissing. They faked it. And you made that shit up about Nathan. Everyone knows it. Think you’re going to claim her?” Silas bellowed, and he launched another fist, making contact with Rocky’s chest, and another coming up against the side of his head. “Think you can mark her and she’s yours? Is that what it means?” Silas stood up, hovering over Rocky. “Come near her again and I’ll finish this.”
“Sang!” North arrived, splitting apart the crowd. He started toward me, and then stopped, spotting Silas and Rocky.
“Get her out of here,” Silas called to him, booming over all the other voices. “Take her out.”
North glanced again between us for a moment. Then his jaw clenched and he nodded before barreling toward me.
Rocky breathed heavily and wiped at his bloody mouth with the back of his hand. Then he tried to get up but Silas put a foot on his chest, pushing him back down.
“No,” Silas said. “Not until she leaves. You’re staying down until she’s gone.”
“Wait,” I blubbered out, realizing I’d been crying. I didn’t like seeing Silas like this. I wasn’t sure I should go. What about Marie? What if the cops came and I was gone? What about this crazy party and Rocky and Jay and everyone else?
North ignored me. He hauled me up over his shoulder before I could back away. I became limp as he cut through the mass of cars, taking the long way around the side of the house and toward the woods.
I cried the whole way.

N
orth kept me over his shoulder until his boots crunched down on the gravel in front of Bob’s Diner. He shifted me, and then put me down. Blood rushed from my head and I swayed. He kept his hands on my shoulders until I steadied.
“Silas,” I breathed out. I wiped my hand over my face to wipe away the tears. “The fight. He’ll get in trouble.”
“Silas did what had to be done,” North said. He repositioned the sleeve of his black T-shirt that had twisted from carrying me. “Rocky’s been asking for this.”
“I know he started it, but did he have to beat him up?”
“He’s on the decline,” North said. “And he’s crossed the line so many times. Especially with you. The team saw it. We saw it. He waited as long as he could for Rocky to straighten up.”
