After cleaning him up and wrapping him in a blanket, the nurse hands me my son. I reach down and touch his tiny little hand. He grips my finger tightly, and from that moment, I’m hooked. I would die for this child. I will do everything in my power to make sure he and his sister know I love them with every bone in my body. I hold him and watch as our daughter is born.
Chelsie falls back against the pillow, totally wiped. I bring Kayden to her and lay him on her chest. The nurse then hands Katherine to me. I lean her down so Chelsie can see her and give her a kiss. “You were amazing, sweet pea. Look at our perfect, beautiful babies. Thank you for redeeming me,” I whisper to her.
After we spend a little time with our babies, I gather them up, one in each arm, and take them to meet the rest of their family. There are so many people waiting to see the babies, they let us use the room next door to Chelsie’s. As I step into the room, Amber and Holly jump from their chairs. Before I know it, they each have a baby in their arms. Kyle and Paul slap me on the shoulders, giving me their congratulations.
“So, how does it feel daddy?” Paul asks.
“Amazing,” I tell him, never taking my eyes from the twins. There are no words to describe this feeling. Amazing just scratches the surface. Only minutes old, and I’m wrapped around their little fingers. When I finally pry them from Holly and Amber, I go back in to check on Chelsie.
She pats the spot on the bed next to her and I gently crawl in beside her. For hours, we lay there together, holding our babies—both of us so completely in love with each other and them. I can’t believe I almost missed out on this; that I tried to steer as far away from ever getting to this place for most of my life. Every ounce of pain I’ve experienced in my life was worth it. It finally brought me to this moment. I found the redemption I’ve been searching for.
