Rescued by Her Wolves

Typical
, I thought to myself, turning the ignition in my car one last time for luck. No dice. The engine was as dead as anything, and it wasn’t going to start up anytime soon.

Well…what the fuck do I do now?

It was actually a good question.

Winding up with a dead engine kind of sucks. Adding in “in the middle of the night” and “in the woods” to the mixture is a pretty bad combination altogether. As I climbed out of my truck and slammed the door shut, I kicked the tire and lost my shit into the air for a moment.

GRAGASGHGHGH
!”

It didn’t make me feel any better, and I knew it. Fuming with anger, I bemoaned my sad fate as I sank against the truck, my ass sliding down to the dirt trail as I held my head in my hands.

Coming this way had been a disaster, but with the last-second emergency that had clogged up the Interstate, I had been sort of lost on the
options
front. Stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, I’d had bitterly consulted my tiny, pocket-sized god – my iPhone, Steve.

It’s unoriginal, I know. Sue me.

Anyway, Steve’s bright little screen had directed my attention to another route, running through a few backwoods towns and looping back to the Interstate. It
also
informed me that whatever holdup was going on with the highway extended until
almost
the spot where I’d hop back on my way, and adjusted my arrival time home from “an hour” to “three hours”.

The decision wasn’t
that hard
to make.

As soon as the exit lane was within reach, I peeled off and headed towards victory. Only…my signal dropped down to
nothing
one town in, and I found myself surrounded by a bunch of closed businesses and literally
nobody
out and about at this hour. So, biding my time, I’d driven on, remembering the route anyway. It was basically a straight shot for the majority of it, anyway.

But I didn’t count on the route taking me off down the woods. Dark and foreboding, I wasn’t sure that I was willing to spend much of my time along the trail…but it was too dark to go any faster than a general crawl of twenty-five to thirty miles per hour (compared to my
ninety
down the Interstate), and that was that. Twenty minutes into it, I’d experienced my dead engine, and there’s where I found myself at the end of it...miserable and alone.

Or, so I thought.

~

I was still trying to assess things half an hour later, fiddling with a flashlight in my truck, when I heard the growl. It sounded like it was coming from right outside the vehicle, and I instantly began to panic. Waving the end of the torch around, I scrutinized everything within viewable distance – deep into the trees, or right outside. Nothing appeared on my visual radar, and I began to calm down.

As I turned back to my driver’s side, I jumped and screamed. A tall, handsome man was standing at the window, shirtless and gazing at me.

“Whoa! Get the
fuck
out of here!” I screamed, thrusting the beam in his direction. He immediately covered his eyes and took a few steps back.

“Whoa, hold on, calm down!” He called out, struggling to see. “Sorry about scaring you! I was coming to find out if you needed help!”

“Yeah right!” I grumbled loudly. “I don’t know who the hell you are, but you need to get out of here. I’m fine! I’ve just…stopped for a minute!” I made sure to hold the beam in his face as I cowered backward across the seats.

“Listen, lady,” he told me sternly, relaxing his posture slightly and holding his hand over his eyes, “you’ve been out here for coming up on an hour. This
really
isn’t a safe part of the woods. There are wild things out here. Come on, I’ve got a place not far from here.”

“I’m not going fucking
anywhere
with you. You scared the shit out of me! It’s the middle of the night! I’ll take my chances out–”

As if on cue, the growl was back. But this time, it sounded like it was right outside the truck. And it was
loud.

I gazed at the stranger, who was looking over my shoulder with a terrified gaze in his eyes.

“Don’t…turn…around…” he told me through the glass. “If you turn around, that thing’s going to attack, and as soon as it gets through the glass…come towards me.” He waved his hands inwardly, keeping his eyes glued over my shoulder.

He could have been lying, but the sound – and the look in his eyes – told me to believe him. As the growl slowly emanated again, I kept my eyes glued to him, slowly creeping his way.

“That’s right…easy does it…just come towards me…” he murmured confidently. “Look at me. Keep your eyes on me.”

I stopped at the door. “What now?” I whispered.

“Slowly,
carefully
, climb out,” he answered. “But do
not
look back.”

Are you out of your GODDAMN MIND?”
I hissed violently. “
I am NOT climbing out of this truck with something like that outside!”

“Look, lady, you’re going to have to trust me…you’ll be safe with me, I promise. But I
need you
to climb out,
stay beside me
, and
don’t. Look. Back.

This entire scenario terrified me, but I did as he requested. Quietly, I popped the door open, climbing out to stand beside him, and closed the door behind myself. “Now what?”

“We need to go. Now. Take my hand.”

Hesitating, I finally put my hand in his, and we bolted from the truck into the trees. I stumbled around the bushes and underbrush as he effortlessly glided in front, pulling me through the darkness. I heard howling from behind, snarling, and unnatural footsteps, crashing through the foliage on our trail.

“Oh fuck!” I cried out as we ran. “What the shit is going on?”

“I’ll tell you when we’re safe!” The stranger told me, and we continued running. Cross-country had never quite been my strong suit, and by the time the house came into view, there was a
tremendous
stitch in my side. We clamored towards the steps and threw open the front door, and he bolted it shut behind us and flicked on the lights.

Whatever the animal was, I heard it bang against the door, scratching at the doorknob and generally losing its shit. After a few moments of silence, there was some dampening thumping as it wandered down the steps and, by the sounds of it, off into the night.

“What the
fuck
was that?” I asked.

“Did you see it?” He demanded, pulling close. “Did you turn to look at it?”

“No!”

His gaze locked onto mine, his eyes searching my own. “I…believe you. Good. That means you’re safe.”

“Safe from what? What the fuck
was
that thing?”

He smiled softly, which was odd, given the circumstances. “It was a werewolf.”

~

The stranger poured me a cup of coffee several minutes later, and I took the warm mug from his hands and gazed around the house. It was an old building. Looked as if it had been constructed in the 30s, maybe the 40s. Sparse décor lined the walls, with simple furniture around – a matching, old couch and loveseat in the living room, one of those
huge
projector box TVs dominating the living room wall near them, with minimal upholstery around. The dining room table looked handcrafted, and so did the chairs for that matter. A staircase along the back of the living room told me that the bedrooms were mostly on a second floor.

“A werewolf,” I finally repeated, taking my first sip.

“That’s right,” the stranger smiled. “Name’s Randall, by the way. The other two’ll be back soon – Rionn and Rosco are those lot. We’re brothers, sort of.”

“Sort of?”

“Bit of a
pack mentality,
you might call it. But anyway, who are you, trapped out in the woods this late at night?”

“My name’s Chloe,” I answered. “I was traveling back home after driving out to spend the week with some friends.”

“Oh yeah? You enjoy yourself?”

“Until I decided to skip the Interstate traffic and took a shortcut,” I chuckled briefly. “So. A werewolf.”

“You’re kind of stuck on the
werewolf
thing, aren’t you?” He smiled softly.

Under the light, I could properly study my mysterious savior. The guy had broad, strong shoulders and an
incredible
set of abdominals. His arms were thick, sculpted pieces of art, and his chiseled face had a thick scruff of beard that matched the thick, dark auburn hair across his scalp. Most intimidating, however, were his piercing green eyes.

That, and the fact that he was still in nothing but jeans.

“I can put a shirt on,” he slyly grinned, tilting his head.

Fuck, he noticed that.
“No, that’s fine. I mean. Whatever you’re comfortable with. What were you doing out there, anyway? In just jeans? You prowl the woods at night, running barefoot often?”

“Bit of a night owl,” Randall chuckled. “Like to go for walks at night, long walks through the woods. Helps me…clear my head.”

“At night? How do you see anything?

“These bright eyes are good for that,” he mentioned, poking a fingertip just under one of his temples. “Something about this color, I guess. I see plenty well in the dark.”

I opened my mouth to retort, but heard the door banging as the sound of hooping, hollering men burst into the room, soon followed by the men themselves. They looked slightly younger than Randall, but clearly similar to him. They even shared his fantastic physique and piercing green eyes.

“Randall, you should’ve seen it, we saw–”

The men went silent at the sight of me. I turned with my cup of coffee, staring at them.

“This is them?” I asked innocently.

“That’s right. Rionn, Rosco,” he introduced them, each nodding politely as their name was mentioned, “I’d like you to meet Chloe. She had some trouble with her truck, and we’re going to let her sleep here for the night.”

“Am I?” I turned on him, staring inquisitively.

“You…really don’t want to go back out there until sunrise,” he replied, before turning his attention to the others. “Our feral friend is back. Caught him about to make mincemeat of our guest. I followed him for half a mile. He was going straight for her.”

The others grew solemn, and I studied everything going on around me with rapt attention.

“We’re going to have to take care of him,” Randall continued. “We can’t have him attacking anyone in the middle of the night. If he can’t control himself, we’ll need to take things up a notch.
Nobody
gets hurt in my woods, you understand?”

The others nodded. One of them piped up. “What do you want us to do?”

“Find him,” Randall answered. “Bring him here. Chain him up until he changes back. We’ll figure something out afterwards.”

“My hero,” I murmured, and although all of them turned to me at my words, they declined to comment. Rionn and Rosco left, the door clattering shut behind them. For a brief moment, I thought I saw some sort of glow from outside,  but when I stepped up and flipped the curtain aside, there was nothing there.
