We crept back
to our sisters in misery, sore, sobbing and defeated.

Still, it was
not a useless gesture in the end. News of our brutal flogging came
to the ears of the surgeon, for one was appointed to each ship by
the authorities, anxious to reduce the number of souls lost on the
voyage. He ordered us brought before him, to be inspected to see we
had come to no harm in our expectant condition. We were a sorry
trio, limping and groaning, but he looked us over, and pronounced
us unharmed.

'For,' he
said, 'the human female is a more resilient creature than many give
credit for, able to endure much more punishment than that, even
when big with child. Or half the children conceived would never
come to term, since a man is entitled to chastise his wife, and in
nine months will find himself with a dozen instances were
provocation is so gross that a belt or rod is all that will cure
it. Still, I'd like to see them better fed.'

This was our
opportunity, and we took it.

'Sir,' I said,
'if you think we need more food, then consider the other poor
wretches. They have given their all to help us in our condition,
seeing each of us is eating for two. I beg you to inspect the
generality of the women, and consider whether they are getting the
rations they need, and to which they are entitled.'

There is much
good in the man, for he listened to what we had to tell him, and
came into the hold to see how the poor creatures fared. From then
on the rations have improved remarkably, and the doctor is now
often seen, observing their issue, to the scowls of the thieving
purser. We are all in much better health and spirits, as we
approach our destination, and for my sisters and I, our imminent
deliveries. What will become of us then, I cannot conjecture, nor
record, for I must close my narrative now.

This account
of our history and salvation, that I have been writing to pass the
long months of the voyage, has been made possible by the kindness
of the chaplain who has furnished me with pen and paper, despite
the captain's warnings of the dangers of encouraging women to
attempt composition or thought, processes widely held to upset the
balance of the unsteady female intellect, leading to hysteria,
brainstorms and mental degeneration, and it is to him that I shall
entrust it for safekeeping, in the hope that some day, other
females may read of our experiences and derive suitable profit from
them.

Epilogue

The foregoing
account was found among what at first appeared to be mere
mouldering rubbish in the attic of an old property in Sydney, when
it was being pulled down to make room for modern development. The
papers, tied with string and wrapped in oilcloth, were wedged into
a crevice in the wall, which may explain how they had come to lie
there for over a century and a half. It is believed that the
building, one of the first to be erected in the colony, was
occupied for many years by a man of religion, who had come out as
chaplain on one of the early convict ships, and had stayed to
minister to the new colonists. It would seem probable, therefore,
that he is the generous gentleman referred to in the manuscript,
who provided the writer with materials to set down her history.

The scholar,
to whom it was passed for study, was able to link the three women
to certain leading families of the city. At first glance one might
be excused for thinking that these families might be proud to
acknowledge ancestors whose children were fathered by a judge, a
bishop or a doctor, but since no one was in a position to say
which, and at least two of the sisters continued their mission of
mitigating the sufferings of men by offering the use of their
bodies for a small monetary consideration, one rising to become the
Madam of a notorious brothel for sailors, the present editor has
agreed to leave out any reference to surnames that might identify
them. In this connection, he would like to thank the families
concerned for the generous tokens of their esteem he subsequently
received.

The room
quieted in anticipation, and in the sudden hush her fear felt loud
as a scream.

There was a
soft ripping of the air behind her and the cane fell abruptly, an
icy lick across her bare buttocks that sent pain blazing through
her. She gasped 'Oh!' in shock, because it was even worse than she
could ever have imagined, and sucked in her breath as the fiery
sensation raged through her flesh.

Paul watched
her writhing bottom with a connoisseur's eye, admiring the welt
rapidly developing exactly where he had intended to place it, just
slightly below the widest part of her luscious rounds and well
above her crease. He gauged the moment when she would feel the
highest level of pain from his next stroke before he calmly struck
her again...

When a boys'
boarding school with a long tradition of caning turns co-ed, the
local girls learn that equality of opportunity means exactly that.
Amy is sent to the school to show how a girl can take a bare-bottom
caning, an event repeated frequently in the months that follow, for
the girls' high spirits lead them into a series of sexual scrapes
deserving of severe punishment...
