“Why are you still standing around? I said head out to the garage and get the gas can. I’ll run down to the corner to fill it while you get the rest of your things out of your room. Only the important stuff, okay?” she reminded.
She kept her eyes off the carnage and focused on the stacks of damp money in the bathtub. She transferred them to the satchel, adding in her head as she went.
Delmer stood staring at Emma, something he’d done so many times before, but never when she wasn’t breathing. Dried blood rimmed her lips. Her nipples stood hard under her t-shirt, stiff from encroaching rigor mortis.
Sylvia zipped the satchel closed. She straightened herself with a groan.
“Dammit, Delmer. Get a move on. I can’t set fire to this place by rubbing two sticks together.” She followed his eyes to Emma’s body. She stepped up to her son and placed a hand on his shoulder. “Forget her. She was a whore.”
Delmer nodded, then shuffled his feet toward the door. He stopped and turned to Sylvia who hefted the satchel of money. “But, Mother . . .”
“Don’t argue with me, Delmer.”
“But what about Officer Coleman?” Delmer showed a look of genuine concern for the man in the closet of Delmer’s room.
She swung the bag over her shoulder. “We’ll buy you a new toy.”
