Because of the current confusion about so-called legitimate hitting, far fewer people report child cruelty than animal cruelty – yet there’s often a crossover between the two as adults who abuse their pets are also much more likely to abuse any children living in the home.
Removed from their violent carers and given significant therapeutic help, many of these children blossom into considerate teenagers. Rex Krebs went from child sex offender to model citizen after being taken away from his cruel father and put into a supportive environment. But he was eventually returned to his father, regressed and went on to commit two terrible homicides.
And Rex Krebs’ body count was statistically low, as the average sadistic American serial killer claims eight known victims before he is caught. And as we’ve seen, some account for even more victims – Robert Hansen privately admitted to murdering 17 women and Robert Rhoades is suspected of up to 50 unsolved homicides.
These sadists cause widespread emotional suffering as the relatives, friends, workmates, neighbours and acquaintances of the victim are all affected by their horrific torture-murder.
And many of these outwardly charismatic men continue to manipulate others within the prison environment.

SADISTIC KILLERS
Ironically, the victims’ families often call for these sadists to be birched or whipped, not realising that the corporal punishment received during childhood fuelled their very first revenge fantasies: beaten on the soles of his feet by his parents, Dayton Rogers went on to beat and cut the feet of numerous prostitutes. Whipped by his father, Victor Miller went on to bind and whip other boys.
The punitive treatment of offenders is similarly counter-productive, as illustrated by Christopher Wilder who was given electroconvulsive therapy after raping a classmate. Already deeply disturbed through being physically and sexually abused, he simply fashioned a torture device from an electric cable and gave his unfortunate victims electric shocks.
Such nightmarish childhoods explain why these men want to mutilate and kill but can’t excuse them. Many other people have suffered repeatedly throughout their formative years but have chosen not to pass that suffering on. Moreover, almost every sadist profiled in this book was loved at some stage by a partner or spouse and most of them had children who would initially have loved them unconditionally. They had the option of making a life based on shared respect but made the active choice to denigrate and destroy.
The final word goes to Viktor Frankl who saw many men cope with extreme adversity at Auschwitz. ‘We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread; they offered sufficient proof that everything can be taken away from a man but one thing, the last of the human freedoms, to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.’
