She walked over to where Kirk sat, next to Hattie Isbell, and handed him the soda he had asked for. “Anything else your majesty?”

“You two are so ornery with each other,” Hattie said. She shook a teasing finger at Christa. “You best be careful, or you'll be on your own again.”

“Not a chance,” said Kirk as he picked up Christa and swung her toward him. He glanced toward Hattie. “Instead of making those doily things you have on your furniture, you’re going to have to make us some booties.”

Christa tugged at Kirk’s ear to get his attention. “Hope you’re good with diapers.” His laughing mouth met hers and they kissed softly.

“I’ll teach Amy,” he said, with a glint in his eye.
