“There is nothing remotely adventurous about my life. I’ve felt more alive since meeting you than I ever have in my life. I don’t want to lose that. I don’t want to lose you.”

He stood abruptly, holding her in his arms, allowing her feet to slide to the floor. She was wearing a stretchy, long-sleeve winter dress that came all the way down to her ankles. Jacob bunched the skirt between his hands and tugged upwards, lifting it up and over her head. “You are the most beautiful woman I have ever laid eyes on,” the earnestness in his voice made her breath catch. She stood clad in only bra and panties. Jacob reached around and unsnapped her bra, dragging it down past her arms before dropping it on the floor. He fell to his knees, wrapping his arms around her waist and placing a light kiss next to her belly button, and then he began whispering to their baby. “This is your daddy, and I need you to remember my voice.”

Gracie’s eyes fell closed at the whispered words, and she fought against tears. She knew it was the hormones that made her always want to cry, but this was a dream coming true for her—having Jacob like this. She ran both hands through his hair, and he kissed her stomach once more. “Now go to sleep. Your mommy has stuff to do,” he hooked his fingers over the waistband of her panties, drawing them down over her hips. She stepped out of them; first one foot and then the other. He stood, forcing her to tilt her head back in order to meet his eyes, and he lowered his head, touching his lips to hers until she opened for him. He used his arm to support her shoulders, then she felt the palm of his other hand brush over her core, and her knees nearly buckled beneath her.

She was already wet and ready for him. Jacob wasted no time getting her back into the bed. She watched him openly as he shed his own clothing, making him feel like his skin was on fire as he moved to join her. He was already about to explode, but he wanted to play witness to her pleasure. He eased in beside her, propping his head up on one hand and leaning on his elbow so he could watch her face. He used his other hand to make a path down her body until he was exploring her wet folds. He slid two fingers inside of her, and used his thumb to gently circle her clit. Her knees fell open as she sucked in a sharp breath, and her back bowed slightly; in response, he increased the pressure. He could feel her body beginning to tense, and she began moving against his hand while making tiny mewling sounds from the back of her throat. When she exploded, it was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen, and he quickly rolled on top of her, entering her fully. He held still, wanting to ride out the last of her crest inside of her, and, when her breathing began to slow, he began moving inside of her, trying to build those crests once more. He kissed her deeply and she met him stroke for stroke. At the first spasm she buried her face in the crook of his neck and gasped for air. He spoke against her ear. “I love you,” he chanted over and over again as he joined her into oblivion.

Jacob slept as if he was dead to the world, and she felt a twinge of guilt. He probably hadn’t slept a full night in months and she had kept him awake all night. Her stomach growled, reminding her of the reason she was awake, and she slid silently from the bed. She went through the contents of her bag in her mind and decided she didn’t have the will to squeeze into any of her clothes this morning. She opened Jacob’s closet and ran her hand lovingly over his clothes. She found a long-sleeve, button-down shirt and tugged it off the hanger. It was baggy and hung all the way to her knees, but it was perfect. In the bathroom she brushed her teeth and hair before going in search of food. Since learning about the baby she did her best not to miss any meals, since it seemed like the right thing to be doing. Unfortunately, after about five minutes of searching, Gracie realized there wasn’t a crumb of food in the entire place, which made sense since he was away from home for months, and since she didn’t have a car, she couldn’t even go to the store. She checked the time, running through her options in her mind, and she thought of Caleb. Didn’t Jacob say he lived across the hall? She debated over it for only a moment before stepping out the door. She tapped lightly on Caleb’s and it didn’t take long for him to answer. He looked a bit surprised but recovered quickly. “Gracie? What can I do for you?”

“There is no food at Jacob’s place,” she told him in her most pitiful voice, and her stomach growled, adding precedence to her words. Caleb smiled at the sound. “Come on in.”

A Twinkie with a wax number seven candle sticking out of it sat an inch from his face. Jacob blinked at the sight wondering if he were dreaming until Gracie scooted it away. “Are you finally awake?”

“Why is there a Twinkie on my pillow?”

“Because I missed your birthday,” she answered simply. “You said you were born on December 26
th
and I realized while you were sleeping that I missed it.”

He sat up, letting the covers pool in his lap. “And where did the Twinkie come from?”

“Well,” she drawled. “It wasn’t easy, let me tell you. Did you know your cabinets are empty?”

He ran his hand through his hair. Why didn’t he think to buy some food? He should’ve known the woman pregnant with his child would need to eat. “I’m sorry about that. I haven’t gotten a chance to go to the store since I got back into town.”

She waved a dismissive hand at his words. “It’s not a big deal. I just went across the hall and Caleb fed me, then he helped me find this for you,” she said, indicating his cake. “We ended up having to go two floors down to see some guy named Smiley, but he gave me a real birthday candle, even though it’s the wrong number.”

Jacob looked down at her bare legs, noticing she wore only one of his button-down shirts, and even though it came all the way down to her knees, it was still sexy as hell. “Did you go to Caleb’s dressed like that?”

“Um-hmm,” she answered, unconcerned.

He shook his head in wonder. She really was clueless of her effect on men. Caleb probably tripped all over himself to make her something to eat, and Smiley most likely tore the building apart to find that candle and Twinkie.

Pulling out a pack of matches, Gracie lit the candle, and then held the snack cake in front of his face. He held her gaze as he blew it out. “What did you wish for?” she asked.

“Stilts.”

“Cool, I love stilts. What else?”

He took the Twinkie from her hand and set it on the bedside table, then pulled her into his arms. “I wished Caleb would make me breakfast too and that I don’t lose my hair as I get older.” She giggled. He fell backwards, tucking her underneath his arm and whispered against her ear. “I wished you would marry me.”
