Chapter One

“I’ve got the hottest assignment coming up this afternoon.” I glanced around the food court to make sure there was no one within earshot. As a mystery shopper, I never know when an employee from one of the many mall stores I regularly evaluate could be lurking nearby.

“So, spill it, April.” My best friend Kelly ate the last bite of her gyro.

“There’s this new place near the Bal Harbour Mall called Your Wildest Dreams. Ever hear of it?” I slid a French fry into my mouth, then remembered I was trying to lose weight. At Kelly’s headshake, I elaborated. “They sell sex toys and lingerie and stuff like that.”

My friend’s eyes widened. She was so easy to shock. “Seriously? I can’t believe anyone would want to buy those things anywhere but on the Internet.”

I patted her hand. “I wish I could bring you with me, but you know the rules. I have to go alone.”

Kelly’s freckled cheeks turned pink. “I could never set foot in a place like that.”

Yeah, I knew that. What had I been thinking? Poor Kelly was so sheltered. She’d married her high school sweetheart right out of college and skipped all that dating-partying-sleeping-around-time most of my friends and I had indulged in. But now, ten years after graduation, Kelly’s marriage was going strong.

Mine had ended nearly a year ago. My lunch sat like lead in my stomach at the thought of my failed relationship. The end of my marriage had left me lonely for a man, but I refused to make the same mistake again. And who would want me with my saggy breasts and all the weight I’d gained. Rob had made it clear before he left that I did nothing for his libido.

“I’m looking forward to checking the place out. Who knows, maybe I’ll pick up a slinky indulgence for myself.” As if I needed any lingerie. My love life had been about as dry as Death Valley in August.

“Is there something you’re not telling me? A new man on the horizon?” She waggled her eyebrows. “Did you finally say yes to your cute neighbor who keeps asking you out?”

Sure, the guy next door had mentioned wanting to take me out, but if he saw me without clothes, he’d change his mind. “Only a vibrator I’ve named Thor.”

Kelly slapped my hand. “You’re so bad.”

“My neighbor merely feels sorry for me.” I shook my head. “No, there’s no man in my life. And until I lose the rest of this weight I’m sure it’ll stay that way.”

“Oh, April.” The pity on her face made me cringe. “You’re beautiful, whatever size you are. You’re beating yourself up because Rob didn’t know a good thing when he had it. I mean, I’d kill for your gorgeous curls and those amazing cheekbones. Anyway, you look like you’re the same size you were in college.”

I shrugged, but I was grateful for Kelly’s constant attempts to boost my fragile self-confidence. “When I started suspecting Rob’s infidelity, I stuffed my face with sweets, trying to ignore the warning signs. Those gluttony fests added twenty pounds directly to my ass and my thighs.” But I’d taken part of that off lately by walking two miles every morning and avoiding things like the yummy French fries calling my name from Kelly’s plate.

What man would want me with that extra cushion? Maybe my mom was right. Rob might not have left if I’d taken better care of myself. I tamped down the ever-present pain with a French fry.

Kelly pushed her plate toward the middle of the table. “But just think, if you hadn’t gotten divorced, you’d have eventually had kids with that asshole. Then leaving the cheating bastard would have been so much harder and more complicated. Plus you’d have never started your job. And don’t try to tell me you don’t like it. I know you’ve always loved to shop.”

When Rob threw me over me for one of those snotty sales clerks who act as if they’re better than everyone, I’d decided to become a mystery shopper. And I haven’t regretted the decision for an instant.

Yes, I know. It sounds so beyond passive-aggressive as a means of getting back at Rob and the bimbo, but it fills several very important needs I developed after the breakup.

“Honestly, it allows me to rid my little corner of the world of stuck up bitches like the one who fucked my husband. It also gives me the satisfaction of pointing out those employees who go above and beyond, the ones who deserve a raise and a pat on the back.

“Aside from that, it fulfills the stipulation of the divorce that I hold a regular, full time job. Yet it pays a mere pittance of an income, which forces Rob to dole out that big alimony. It’s so satisfying to know I’m screwing him nearly as hard as he’s screwing the bimbo.”

“I’m so proud that you’ve finally gone pro. If you’re lucky maybe they’ll offer you a shop where the bimbo works and you can rate her herself.” Kelly took a sip of her diet soda and pointed to the mound of fries that made up three quarters of her plate. “Take more, please. What do you have to do at that sex toy place, anyway?”

The fries called to me so I swiped another. Definitely the last one. “That’s the strangest part of the assignment. I mean I have to do the usual, make a purchase, return it later, evaluate the staff, the dressing rooms, you know?”

Kelly nodded, her perky blonde bob sweeping perfectly over her shoulders.

“They want me to inquire about their extra services.” After another fry, I continued. “What do you think that could mean?”

Kelly pressed a hand to her Peter Pan collar and gasped. “You don’t think this involves some sort of prostitution or anything like that, do you? Right in Bal Harbour?”

I waved away my friend’s concerns. “I’m sure it’s nothing like that. Not here in our town.” I knew my friend well enough to be sure she’d be shocked to discover there were hookers anywhere in our upscale enclave. I loaded all our trash onto the tray then shuttled it to the trashcan before I could tempt myself with any more fat-laden starches.

Kelly squeezed a blob of antibacterial foam on her hands, rubbed it in. “I don’t think I’d have the nerve to do that job, although usually, your days sound so much more exciting than mine.” She offered me a squirt, which I accepted.

What wasn’t more exciting than Kelly’s job, being a dental assistant at a walk-in dental clinic in a shopping center? I get to spend my days at one of the many chic malls in the greater Miami area, buying then returning a sweater at this shop, testing a salesman’s knowledge of this or that brand of suitcase at the luggage store, lunching with Kelly or another friend at a specified chain restaurant or inquiring about opening an account at the assigned bank. I even got to test drive cars I could never actually afford to purchase.

Then I head home and complete a report on each assignment. All I have to do after that is sit back and wait for a check.

“Well, back to the old grind.” Kelly chuckled at her own joke.

I gave her a hug, then left for my next job with more than a little curiosity about the unusual nature of the business. The store wasn’t in a mall, but rather a freestanding building not too far off the beaten path. No problem.

But the moment I crossed the threshold into Your Wildest Dreams I knew the place was like nothing I’d ever seen before. From the outside the building appeared quite ordinary, just a quaint little cottage with a wraparound porch and a couple palm trees out front.

Inside, however, things were anything but ordinary. Think of every heavenly aroma you’ve ever smelled. All at once I breathed in the scent of hyacinth, my grandmother’s fresh baked bread and hot cinnamon buns, a summer afternoon rainstorm. I wondered how I’d describe all those scents on my report later, but it was kind of like being in olfactory nirvana. If that was incense, I wanted some.

The store seemed way larger inside than it appeared from the outside. There were several racks of sexy lingerie—your standard French maid outfits, peek-a-boo bras, crotch-less panties.

Glass display cases were backlit with pink lights and showcased small items like nipple clamps, blindfolds, cock rings and vibrators.

Larger merchandise like restraint systems and whips were tacked to the walls. There were even a couple mannequins suited up in kinky outfits. Something called a bondage swing hung from the ceiling as well as a few unlabeled contraptions I probably should have been able to identify, only I couldn’t.

Rob and I had had a pretty ordinary sex life before and during our marriage. It wasn’t bad, quite the contrary. Our bedroom escapades had never included elaborate props like these, though. Nothing more exotic than the occasional bottle of heating lubricant or fur-lined handcuffs. Purely amateur stuff.

I dated a guy in college who liked me to whip his ass with a leather belt, but that was as much kink as I’d ever experienced. Sure, I’ve seen my share of X-rated movies, but I’ve never had the nerve to actually try something I saw in one.

My first thought was that I had to bring all my best girlfriends here. Only something inside me wanted to keep this all to myself. My nipples suddenly stood at attention and my pussy sort of hummed with interest.

I was so entranced by the displays that I hardly noticed the salesman standing in an arched doorway behind a beaded curtain. He was totally stunning like a model you’d see on the cover of a men’s magazine. Tall and muscular, he wore a plain blue T-shirt and jeans, but on him, it looked as good as an expensive business suit would on a lesser man. His skin was the color of mahogany and his hair was dark brown and fixed in tight cornrows from front to back. The ends of the braids grazed the top of his broad shoulders and a few had gold beads woven in. And his mouth, oh God. His lips were dark red, damp and parted ever so slightly revealing gleaming white teeth.

I imagined those lips on mine, on my breasts and my pussy. Realizing my face and neck were on fire, I clamped down on my rising libido and cleared my throat. I had no idea why this man stirred something deep inside me, something hungry and primal.

“Welcome to Your Wildest Dreams.” His voice was low and smooth, really sexy. It put me in mind of Barry White. With an accent. Maybe Jamaican or from some other tropical island. His dark gaze slid over me from head to toe, real slow, like he wanted me to notice.

The air crackled with sexual energy. I drew a steadying breath and braced myself against a display rack before taking a few steps toward him, racking my brain to recall the job instructions.

Jeez, I never forget this stuff.

I didn’t know if it was the salesman or the ambiance of the place that had knocked me a little off kilter. “Hello,” I managed. “Do you have any…lingerie?”

Okay, that was a really dumb question considering at least half the floor space was occupied by racks of slinky bedroom wear.

He let out a quiet chuckle then parted the strings of beads in his way and strode past the counter to the middle of the room. “Anything in particular?” He set his hands on his slim waist, emphasizing his broad chest and long, lean legs.

But all I could focus on were his lips. I gave my head a quick shake, trying to clear away the cobwebs in my brain. “Um, yes. Something black and tasteful, maybe a teddy.” I found it odd that I wasn’t the least bit embarrassed asking him about lingerie.

“We don’t get many requests for tasteful.” His wink and smile set me more at ease.

“Maybe tasteful was the wrong word.” Not a damn thing in the place fit that description. My gaze roamed the glass cases and the walls.

“We have something for everyone, for any mood and fantasy.” He pointed to a corner shelf unit lined with high leather boots and six-inch spiked heels in every color. “With those long legs you could carry off anything and remain sexy as sin.”

I lifted an eyebrow at his rather forward pronouncement, although I did enjoy the compliment. “Thank you.” I crossed the floor to the shoe area, aware of his penetrating gaze on me. Warmth crawled up my face. I picked up a pair of rhinestone-studded white stilettos, which happened to be my size. Toeing off my sandals, I glanced at the salesman. “Okay if I try these?”

“Of course.” He stood there watching me, making me more self-conscious than I was already.

I stepped into the shoes and nearly toppled over. Definitely not the kind I’d wear out of the bedroom. But when I checked the low mirror I had to admit, they looked incredibly hot on me. I tried to remember how much I was supposed to spend here, but I couldn’t.

Wasn’t like I had any use for bedroom shoes, though. My only nighttime company lately had been my ancient vibrator, which barely worked and it couldn’t care less what I wore on my feet.

The salesman folded his arms over his chest, making his biceps look huge. “They look great, although personally, I like the black ones better.”

Inexplicably, his opinion mattered to me. He was a guy. Maybe that was it. But deep down, I knew it was because I was so drawn to him. I stepped out of the white shoes, put them back and foraged for a pair of black ones in my size.

Okay, that was weird. They were all my size.

“May I help you find them?” He came closer and reached for a box the exact moment I did. His hand closed over mine on the side of the box.

Heat instantly seared my skin. My nipples strained against my bra and I felt my juices slick my entrance. Our eyes met. I parted my lips, drew in a shaky breath.

When he let go, I mourned the loss.

“Allow me.” He took the shoes out of my hands and gestured toward a stool.
