Writing about Nikola Tesla was really important to me, but I had no idea when I started my research the absolute depth and heartbreak of his story. He offered his entire life—the whole of his existence—to further our lives and got anonymity in return.

I purposefully published Shadow Boxer on the 71st anniversary of Tesla’s death. On that day, the greatest scientist the world has never known died alone in the hotel room where he spent his last years. Abandoned by the greats of his time: J.P. Morgan, Westinghouse, and Edison, Tesla wanted only to give his genius to the world.

Nearly everything we touch today was impacted by his inventions, from cars to radios to x-rays, yet credit goes to men who were simply better at marketing.

I stuck these men in Evy's book and wrote about Tesla in the most non-scientific way possible in the hope that people who might not know about such an amazing man might get intrigued enough to set history straight and shine some well-deserved appreciation on the father of our time.

I took some liberties on dates for Tesla’s work and filled in a few of the blanks in his journals with Evy’s visits, but facts abound that can attest to his greatness. Nikola Tesla’s contributions to science and everyday life are vast and worth checking out, up to and including his deepest wish to create the gift of free energy to the entire planet. He was very very close to succeeding; the deal with Westinghouse was real, as was J.P. Morgan’s empty promises to finance the research, choosing instead to profit from Tesla’s life work by monetizing electricity and creating General Electric with Edison. (Admittedly, I get a little misty-eyed imagining a world where things worked simply because they existed, not because of access to power.)
