“Why do you care? Didn't you just tell some bitch you were coming through and you missed the way she tastes? Why do you care if I move on?”

He took a step toward her and now they were inches apart. Black looked down at Yami while she looked away. His large hand grabbed her chin and tilted her head back, forcing her to look at him.

“I care because I just fucking do, Yamiah. We have a child. I was your first and you belong to me. That shit ain't changing. I told you that.”

“I don't belong to you, and so what we have Ray? That won't change, but you don't care about me, you just don't want to let me go. It's not fair.”

“You damn straight I don't want to let you go, and I’m not. How the fuck you gon’ tell me I don't care about you, Yami? You don't want for shit, do you? Nobody fucks with you because of me. You know how many bitches wanna fuck you up daily because you had my child? Shit, they would too, if I didn't have them in check. You’re under my protection. You think that nigga can do that for you? When shit goes down around here, muthafuckers know not to touch a hair on your head or they’ll have to deal with me. Trust me, I care, and I do more for your ungrateful ass than you know. Yet, you out here trying to give my shit away. The fuck wrong with you?”

“I don't need that or want that. I just want to be happy. I don't want a man who leaves my bed to go right to another one. Why can't you see that?”

“Those bitches don't mean shit, but I'm gon’ do me. That's just how it goes, you knew that when you fucked with me. Don't act like it’s a problem now, but you think you can do better, fine, do that shit. Just don't come crying back to me when that nigga turns out to be just like me. Trust me, I know who the fuck he is. You think I don't have eyes on you? You don't think I know you was damn near fucking him in his car last night. I know everything, Yami. These are my got damn streets. I wanted to kill your ass for that shit, but on the strength of Ray, I didn't. But I’ll kill that nigga, though. Don't think I won't.”

Yami looked at him speechless, she didn't know how to respond.

“Yeah, that’s what I thought. That nigga got hoes just like me, you ain't special, but try that shit if you think you are. Trust me, though, you’re still mine. This is mine.”

His large hands connected with her body. One around her neck and the other between her legs. He gripped her neck tight as he massaged her through her jeans.

“Black, stop, please.” Yami struggled to get out.

“You want me to stop, but you like the way it feels, right? This is made for me, Yami, and you know it.” Black leaned down and kissed her.

“Make that nigga wear a condom or I’ll fuck you up because I’m the only one who is gon’ be up in this shit raw. Go play, I’ll give you that because I know you’ll be back. That nigga don't have shit and can't do a damn thing for you, but I promise you this.” He tightened his grip around her neck. “If anything happens to Ray because her hoe ass mother can't appreciate the fact that I’m the best thing that ever happened to her, I swear on everything real, not even Ray will keep me from killing you and that nigga. Now try me if you think I’m playing with you, and make sure that nigga don't get it confused. Ray already has a father. He can have your hoe ass, but my daughter, that's not up for negotiation.”

Yami couldn't speak because of the hold he had on her, so she nodded. At this point, she would say anything to get herself out of there.

Black let her go and then chuckled. “You'll be back, and when you are, I hope you know shit is gon’ be different. You don't appreciate a nigga, but I can show you better than I can tell you. I promise you this, your ass is gon’ miss me when I’m gone.”

Yami watched him step away from her, but she didn't move until he spoke again. “The fuck you standing there for? You know I got somewhere to be.”

She didn't say a word, she just lifted her book bag from the sofa and moved to the door. When she looked back at him, he was already moving down the hall toward his bedroom so she unlocked the door and left.

Her mind was all over the place, and she needed time to think. There was no way Black was letting her go that easy, or was he? Maybe he was just testing her, or maybe he planned to go after Miego.

Miego
, Black mentioned things about him that she had assumed, but didn't know for sure. Maybe Black was just lying to make her question or doubt Miego, but maybe he was telling the truth. Was she making a mistake by trusting him? Yami didn't know what to do, so, for now, she was about to catch the bus to pick up her daughter from daycare and then head to her mother’s house. She needed time to think.

Chapter Eight

M
iego was pissed as he rolled through his block. Yami had disappeared on him with a text saying that something came up. She wouldn't answer his calls or text, which was pissing him off even more, but to make matters worse, he overheard two of Black’s guys in the corner store discussing how Black was with Yami, so they would have to get up with him later.

Fuck her
. If she couldn’t leave that nigga alone, then he didn't need her. He wasn't about to be chasing her, just for her to go running back to Black. Miego didn't have time for games or an indecisive female. As much as he was feeling Yami, he wasn't about to be played by any female, not even her. The messed up thing was no matter how mad he was; he couldn't stop thinking about her. He wanted to see her, he needed an explanation, even if it was on some bullshit.

For now, he had business to handle, so he went and picked Kia up. Since Yami had bailed on him, he needed someone to do the walkthrough for the apartment he was looking at. He didn't want anyone to know it was for him, so he needed Kia to pretend like she was the one interested. Miego damn sure wasn't going to put shit in her name, but for now, he needed her.

“Oh, so you can call me when you need something, but when you don't it's ‘fuck you, Kia’? I shouldn't even go.” She was standing outside his car with the door open and talking shit.

“Yo, get in the fucking car before I snatch your ass up, Kia. We're late, and I don't have time for this shit.” Miego let out a frustrated breath. He didn’t feel like dealing with her fucked up attitude and was slowly regretting his decision to include her in his plans for the day.

She obeyed and slid into the passenger seat, but not without rolling her eyes and slamming the door.

“Yo, chill with that shit. You break my fucking door and I’m going to break your ass.” Miego grilled her, more pissed at Yami than he was with Kia, but she was running a close second.

Even with all that, he couldn't help but admire how good she looked. Her hair was pulled up into some ponytail style on top of her head. You would think that having a sister would help with knowing about stuff like that, but he didn't know shit about hairstyles. All he knew was that it was sexy to him because it exposed her neck and face.

Kia was beautiful with flawless skin which he always loved. His eyes moved down her body to the t-shirt she was wearing. It hugged her breasts and flat stomach. His eyes kept going until he reached her painted on jeans. He grew harder the more he admired her.

“If you want to fuck, let's go inside. Otherwise, let's go.” She rolled her eyes when she realized he was checking her out.

“You can suck my dick, but I ain't putting my shit in you, strapped or not. Your hoe ass has been doing too much.”

Miego pulled off and Kia didn't say anything. She was pissed, but she knew he was right, so she kept her thoughts to herself. If she behaved, he might actually bless her later, regardless of what he was saying. She missed him. Not many men could please her like Miego could. She wasn't messing around for the good dick; she was just doing it to keep her bills paid. For satisfaction, Kia only really craved Miego.

Well, him and Black, but she damn sure couldn’t let Miego know that. She and Black had been messing around for a while, long before she ever knew Miego. When they got together, she let Miego think she had left Black alone because he was abusive. Truth be told, he had only put his hands on her once, and that was when she cussed him out for leaving her to go to the hospital when his daughter was born. She hated Yami for giving him a child, but Black fucked her on the regular, even while she was with Miego, so she dealt with it.

Black was only good for sex, but Miego took care of her, paid her bills, and bought her stuff, or, at least, he used to. Black never gave her anything. He might break her off a few hundred here and there, but outside of that, he kept his pockets tight.

They pulled up at the building where Miego was supposed to meet the realtor and parked. Kia’s face lit up at the sight of it. She knew exactly where they were, and knew the residences in the building were nice and expensive. All that did was spark her curiosity about how he was going to be able to afford it since he kept crying broke. If he was looking at an apartment in this building, he was either on the block again or about to be, and Kia was thinking dollar signs. That was enough motivation for her to play nice, so she made up her mind to do just that. When they got out, Kia waited for him on the sidewalk.

Once he locked the car and was next to her, she started talking shit again. “You don't have any other bitch to play house with?” Her smile hid her intentions. She wanted to see if he would openly admit to seeing someone right now. Miego always had women, but none that he really committed to other than her, so she could deal with the regulars.

“Yeah, I do, but right now you’re here, so shut the fuck up and let's go. Oh, and act like you got some damn class. Don't go in here showing your ass, Kia.”

She laughed and walked past him with a grin because she took that to mean there wasn't anyone steady, so she was temporarily happy.

After they did the walkthrough, Miego decided that he wanted the place. He told the realtor that he would get in touch with her soon. His story was that the apartment was a surprise for his girl and he needed time to work out the details. It was clear to him that the realtor could tell from his appearance that his business dealings weren't exactly legitimate. His body was covered in tattoos and he had offered to buy the place cash. Apparently, that made no difference to her because she made a point to keep mentioning that she would do whatever necessary to make sure he secured the place for his girl.

In fact, she said it so many times that Miego was almost certain that she didn't care who the fuck the place was for, as long as she received her commission from it. At this point, he just needed it to be in someone's name other than his, so right now he had to press pause on the transaction until he figured out his next move. This, of course, brought him back to Yami, and he was instantly pissed off all over again. As he drove Kia back to her place, he kept checking his phone, hoping that Yami had called. This didn't go unnoticed by Kia.

“What bitch are you waiting on, Miego? You keep checking your phone like you mad or something.”

She stared at him, arms folded across her chest, breathing heavy and waiting. It was none of her business, so, of course, he ignored her until she snatched his phone out of his lap and attempted to unlock it. He chuckled, knowing that he had long since changed his passcode and deleted her thumbprint, which she’d snuck and entered one night when he stayed with her. Miego knew that Kia was sneaky as fuck, so he always checked stuff like that after he left her.

When she realized she couldn't get into his phone, she threw it at him and it hit the door, just missing the bottom of the window.

“Don't make me fuck you up in here, Kia. Who I’m fucking with is none of your business, just like you giving Train head for kush is none of mine.” Miego smirked, knowing that he’d pissed her off by calling her on her shit.

Miego pulled up in front of her building and reached down between the door and the seat to get his phone. He unlocked it to send Train a text. The two were supposed to have a meeting in a few hours, so he wanted to make sure they were still on.

“You really gon’ sit here and text another bitch while I’m with you?”

Miego lingered with his message a little longer than he needed to, only to piss Kia off even more before he slid his phone into his pocket.

“I told you, you ain't my damn girl, Kia. I can text whoever the fuck I want to, whenever the fuck I want to, and it's none of your damn business. The sooner you get that shit, the less complicated your life will be. The fuck I look like dealing with you when I know you’ll go as low as sucking my man’s dick for a damn twenty sack? I tried, but you just don’t get it. You’re not for me anymore, Kia. I can’t be with someone that causes me to have to say a silent prayer that I don’t catch something every time I slide up in their shit.” He looked at her serious as hell, which made it worse.

“You’re a fucking asshole and I hate you,” Kia yelled.

“Yeah, I’ll be that, but at least, my shit won't fall off from fucking around with you. But I got some stuff to do, so I'll catch you later.”

Kia stared at Miego as if expecting him to say something else. She was pissed, but more hurt than anything, and the fact that he didn't seem moved by the fact that he had just insulted her magnified her hurt feelings. Kia knew that she hadn't always been the best to Miego. She cheated, she did dumb things, but she genuinely cared for him. She knew who he was, she knew what he was capable of, and the kind of guy Miego was.

Feeling defeated, Kia opened the door and got out, half expecting him to at least acknowledge the fact that she was upset, which of course he did not do. He seemed preoccupied and uninterested in anything concerning her at the moment. It pissed her off, but she only had herself to blame. The only thing she could do was watch as he pulled away from the curb while she settled into to the disappointment that she had lost a good thing.

Having a man like Miego in your corner was definitely an asset. If he was down for you, you never had to worry about anything. She had learned that over the years and was starting to face the fact that she no longer had that with him.

Miego received confirmation from Train that they were still on for eight, so he had a few hours to kill, and still no sight of Yami. Unable to let it go, he decided to go look for her at the only two places he knew to look. Yami didn't have a car, so he started with her sister’s place. If he didn't find Yami there, he was going straight to her mom’s crib. He didn't know shit about her family, but they were going to know him today. She was about to explain what the fuck came up that caused her to have him waiting outside her school looking like a damn fool and then ignoring his calls all day.

When he reached Yaz’s building, he parked and sat there for a minute. Miego realized that he knew the building but didn't know the apartment.
Fuck!
He saw a few kids run inside and decided to ask and see if they knew Yaz, so he got out and locked his ride. When he pushed through the metal door, the kids were gone. He could hear them running up the stairs, so he yelled up to them.

“Aye yo, do you know Yami and Yaz?”

One of the dirty face little boys who appeared to be around ten leaned over the rail looking down into the stairwell at him.

“I might, how much you got on it?”

Miego chuckled. Shorty was running game, so he rolled with it.

“How much you want?” he returned.

“I’ll take twenty?” the kid yelled back.

“You wait at the door with me, and once I know it’s the right apartment, I’ll make it fifty.”

“You bullshitting,” the kid yelled back with a grin as he rubbed his hands together.

“Straight up, yo.” Miego reached into his pocket, pulled out a fold of cash, and removed a fifty.

“Fourth floor, meet me there,” the kid yelled.

Miego grinned and climbed the stairs. He didn't like fucking with the elevators because it was nothing for them to break down, and he wasn't about to get stuck on one.

When he pushed through the metal door to the fourth floor, the kid was waiting. He led the way to a door and held his hand out.

“Chill, shorty, if she’s in there, you get fifty. If not, yo ass gets ten.”

“Ah, man, that's fucked up, homie. It's not my fault if she ain't home.”

“You got a fly ass mouth, how old are you?” Miego asked and then knocked on the door.

“I’m grown,” he responded with a hard stare, eyeing Miego up and down, which made him laugh.

Miego stepped to him and grabbed a fist full of his shirt before forcing him against the wall. He lifted the kid off his feet just a little and noticed the fear in his eyes.

Just then, the door opened and Yaz stepped out.

“Why are you holding Shelton like that?” She glared at Miego, who ignored her and focused on the kid.

“I thought you were grown, lil nigga. Why you look scared?” Miego lowered him to the floor and handed him the fifty.

Shelton snatched it and ran off. Just before he pulled on the door leading to the stairwell, he yelled, “I wasn't scared, bitch.” And then he was gone.

Miego laughed, remembering when he was that age. He was the same way, unruly and running the streets.

“Umm, can I help you?”

“Is your sister here?”

“No, she’s not, and before you ask, I don’t know where she is. If I did, I wouldn't tell you because she doesn't need to be messing with you in the first place.” Yaz had her hand on her hip and scowling at Miego like she wanted to jump on him.

He couldn't help but think how she looked more like Yami’s daughter than Yami did.

“That’s cool. I’ll find her, and for the record, me fucking with your sister is none of your business. I get the whole that’s your family thing and you want to protect her, but it's her life. I might not be the best, but I’m better than that nigga she’s fucking with now. At least, I’ll never put my hands on her. So think about that, while you trying to be her protector and run her life.” Without another word, he walked off, leaving Yaz with her mouth open, unable to respond.
