Chapter Eight

I knew this was going to be their condition. Even though they were
fine with my blood flowing through Ella, they were not going to be fine with us
as a couple. With our blood mixed, having a child together would be deemed as
too dangerous in their eyes.

The shock on Ella’s eyes told me she understood what they were
getting at.

“What about children?” Ella asked, probably just to make sure and
hear it from their mouths.

Drake leaned forward and used his hands as he spoke. “The fact
that you two can’t have children is definitely an issue considering you’re
practically inseparable.”

“Look, we know that mixing Soul Seers blood is frowned upon,
especially when it comes to two Soul Seers having children, but look at the
obstacles we’ve already overcome. I think once the time comes, we’ll be able to
handle it,” I explained rather adamantly.

“You haven’t told him, have you?” Leon asked Ella. Ella just
looked stunned as her eyes darted between the two men and myself.

“Tell me what?” I asked with confusion.

“Jonah, I’ve been meaning to tell you, but there was never a good
time. I honestly didn’t think it would come up this way,” Ella said with a
slight quiver to her voice.

Softening my stare a bit, I said, “It’s okay. You know you can
tell me anything. What’s up?”

Knotting her hands in her lap, she finally looked into my eyes and
said, “I can’t have children.”

“What do you mean?” I asked. I was utterly confused. Did she think
she couldn’t because of their ridiculous rules?

“I mean, I’m not able to have children,” she repeated again. “You
know that scar that runs up the side of my body?”

I nodded.

“Well, that happened in the accident. And when that happened,
several organs were severely damaged,” she explained as a tear rolled down her
cheek. “My uterus was one of the most damaged. So, I’m not physically able to
have children.”

I was stunned. Unsure of what to do, I just sat there and stared
at this beautiful, damaged creature before me. She was stronger than I ever
imagined and I loved her even more for it.

Holding out my arms, I let her close the small gap between us so I
could hold her.

“I’m sorry,” she said. Her voice was muffled into my chest and
followed by a dainty little sniff.

“Don’t be sorry. It’ll be just fine,” I soothed.

“Well, that’s all sweet and everything and I hate to interrupt,”
Drake said rather abruptly. “But what I meant was your actual inability to have
children is an issue—however not impossible. The reason I brought it up
was because I want you to see a healer.”

Ella’s head rose from my chest and she wiped a few stray tears
from her cheeks.

“A healer? What are you talking about? They told me it was
irreparable,” Ella said with doubt in her voice.

“To a human doctor it may be irreparable. But to a Soul Seer who
has the special gift of healing, anything is possible,” Leon clarified.

“But—and not that I’m not grateful—but why would you
want her to be able to have children? Surely you don’t want two Soul Seers
reproducing, right?” I asked.

“Actually,” Drake said, “Ella is special. And I believe a child
created by the two of you would be even more special in its own unique way.”

“Really?” Ella said as her face lit up with excitement and relief.
“Why the exception? What makes me so special?”

“The fact you have a pure soul makes you very special, Ella,”
Drake affirmed. “Of course, we’ll want to keep in touch with you so we can see
how things are going. And if you ever need any help with anything, we’re always
here.”

After a few awkward goodbyes and an exchange of information, Drake
and Leon left us alone by our lake.

“I’m so sorry I didn’t tell you sooner, Jonah. I was just so
scared of the reality and—”

Placing my fingers on her mouth shut her up long enough for me to
lean in for a kiss. Deepening the kiss, I made sure she understood just how
much she meant to me. Pulling away, she looked into my eyes and smiled.

“Thank you, Jonah,” Ella whispered with labored breath.

“For what?” I asked, wondering why she felt the need to thank me
for anything.

“For saving my life.”

As I looked into her beautiful amethyst eyes and could see my own
reflection, it dawned on me that
she
was the one who saved
me
.

Epilogue

The past five years have been heaven and hell all wrapped into a
big ball of love.

Because of those
trials, I am now able to spend time with the two most important people in my
world.

Folding my arms across my chest and leaning my shoulder against
the door jam, a smile crosses my face while sneaking peeks of my slumbering
boys.

As the sunshine streaming
through the sheer window curtains warms the room with a lustrous glow, I can’t
help but wonder what life would be like if the Sideri hadn’t recommended Healer
Willow.

Willow is a kind, old woman who I have remained friends with over
the years.

Her powers to cure and
rejuvenate someone’s ailments far exceed any other Soul-Seer talents—at
least in my opinion.

The healing
process is not an act of magic, but instead lies within our own minds.

Willow’s only power is to influence the
sick into harmonizing with their conditions and gain the ability to heal on
their own.

Throughout the healing process, I’ve had to focus on the good,
bad, and ugly in my life.

I can
honestly say, the enlightening process has made me a better and more
well-rounded Soul Seer.

Tiptoeing over to the glider where Jonah lay and placing my hand
gently on his shoulder allows me to see what he sees, feel what he feels, and
know what he knows.

At this
moment, he sees Lukas, he feels Lukas, and he knows that Lukas is special far
beyond what words can express.

Watching them play and hearing his laughter makes me smile as I
eavesdrop on their dreams.

Mommy?

Yes, dear?

Mommmmy!

What is it?

“Mommy!” he hollers, making us both jump with startling jolts.

My heart pounding in my chest is the most prominent result of his
insistent need to get my attention.

Jonah picks his head up and looks around in a daze.

“Luke, you scared me,” I gasp, while holding my hand over my
heart.

Luke reaches his plump, little two-year-old hand out as if he
wants to touch me and thinks,
I sowwy
.

Finally making contact with my cheek, I
feel a sudden calm overtake my body—like a glassy lake on a serene,
summer day.

My hand involuntarily leaves my heart and grasps onto his little
fingers, holding his warm palm tight against my cheek.

“Aunt Jesse is coming over to play with you,” I tell him in hopes
he will become excited to see her.

Looking at Jonah, I whisper, “Our little man is so stinkin’
cute.”

My compliment awards me
with a dazzling smile from Daddy while Luke’s hand pulls away.

Deciding he is still a bit tired, Lukas lays his head back down on
Jonah’s chest and pats his little hand repeatedly over his daddy’s heart.
