Chapter Seven

A groggy, confused Celine opened her eyes and looked around. Right away, she noticed she was in a hospital bed, and suddenly the accident came back to her. She sat up quickly, and a piercing pain shot through her head, causing her to hold her grab it with her hands and groan in agony.

“Easy, darling,” a deep, familiar voice said from the opposite side of her hospital bed.

Celine turned her aching head to see a smiling, calm-looking Trevor sitting in a chair near her bed. Celine’s eyes widened in surprise. Although a big part of her was happy to see him, another part of her was still very hurt and angry about the way he’d been ignoring her since their night of heated passion.

“Glad to see you’re finally awake,” he said, his smile never leaving his face.

“What are you doing here?” Celine snapped at him, as her seething anger began to take over.

Trevor looked taken aback from her reply. But his stern look soon faded from his face and in a soft, caring voice, he answered her.

“Celine, sweetheart, you have every right to be angry with me, but please, just give me a chance to explain things to you before you cut my head off.”

Celine just looked at him with a blank stare. “I’m listening.”

“I never had a chance to explain everything to you about the Connor situation. I hired a private investigator/mole to dig deeper into the conspiracy you uncovered. As it turns out, Connor was onto you. He had rearranged the accounts to make it look like you and I had been in on the embezzling together. He was going to try and pin the crime on
you.

“I had to make it look like I had cut all ties with you in order to foil his plan. He knew he couldn’t call me on it, and cutting ties with you made him have to come up with a whole new approach. That bought me the time I needed to build my case against him and expose him for what he really is: a professional white-collar thief.

“So you see, Celine, I did what I had to in order to protect
you.
Connor was arrested earlier today, and I was actually on my way to explain everything to you when this all happened. I sent you a text message to let you know I was headed to the office and wanted to take you to lunch. Here, see for yourself.” Trevor pulled his cellphone from his pocket and handed it to Celine.

Celine looked down and read the message on Trevor’s phone:

Celine, darling, I know you must be very confused and angry with me, but I am asking you for a chance to explain things to you. Please, let me take you to lunch today so that we can talk. I am on my way to the office and I have a surprise for you.

Celine’s jaw dropped open in awe. Suddenly, she understood everything, and all of the anger and rejection she’d been feeling over the past several weeks instantly began to wane. It had been Trevor’s text message that had caused her phone to go off right before that car had hit her.

“So you see, Celine, I still love you, sweetie,” he took her hand and kissed it softly. “You said you had something important to talk to me about. What was it?”

Celine’s heart melted from the sound of his sincerity.

Chapter Eight

Just then, the doctor walked into the hospital room.

“Miss Rossi?” he asked, “it’s so good to see you’re finally awake. How are you feeling?”

Celine looked up at the doctor.

“My head hurts and body aches,” Celine replied.

“So sorry to hear that, Miss Rossi, but we had to be very careful what we gave you for pain. We don’t wanna hurt the baby, you know.” The doctor smiled at her.

“Baby?” Trevor’s eyes grew wide as he said it. He turned to look at Celine. “
My
baby?”

Celine nodded her head, looking down at her lap.

Trevor put his hand on his chest. “Is this what your message was about?” he asked her.

Again, Celine nodded, still looking down at her lap.

“Oh my…Wow!” Trevor exclaimed, the look of surprise filling his face.

“Miss Rossi, your baby is fine. It was not hurt in the accident,” said the doctor. “We just want to keep you overnight and run a few more tests, and you should be able to go home in the morning.”

Celine looked happy and relieved. The doctor left the room.

Trevor looked at Celine again.

“Celine, honey, I had no idea…”

“Its fine, Trevor,” you don’t have to apologize.

“I never would have left you all alone in this, had I known,” said Trevor.

“I know, Trevor,” Celine smiled and took his hand in hers.

Trevor leaned in and kissed her lips.

“So what was the surprise you had for me at lunch today?” Celine asked him.

Trevor took a small box out of his pocket. Celine recognized the box right away. It was a ring box.

Trevor knelt down beside the hospital bed and opened the box to reveal a beautiful, shiny diamond engagement ring.

Celine placed both hands on her face as tears of joy began to well in her eyes. She could barely believe what was happening.

“Celine Rossi, I love you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. You are the most amazing woman I have ever met, and I want us to raise our baby together, as a family. Will you marry me?”

Celine’s eyes overflowed and her happy tears ran down her plump cheeks.

“Yes! Yes, Trevor! A million times yes!” she exclaimed happily.

Trevor placed the humongous diamond ring on her finger and kissed her hand.

“When you come home tomorrow, Celine, I want you to come home with me, to stay. What do you say?”

Celine nodded happily through her sobs. Trevor took her in his arms and kissed her forehead.
