Chapter One

Penny Dunlap sat at the counter of Average Joe’s Pub in Parshall, drinking instead of crying. She was sipping, but for someone who didn’t drink, a chimney glass of watered-down bourbon counted as drinking for her.

Well, it started out as watered-down bourbon, and then became ‘plus two shots of tequila’.

There was a sucker born every minute someone said. Penny may have been born twenty-eight years ago, but she kept it coming. How could she be so stupid? Apparently, she wasn’t the only one. The town was packing up what was left of their dreams and leaving. That’s what happened to the family who hired her to be nanny to their children. Gone.

Penny had heard about the boom. Thought it would be a good change. Quit her job and headed west. And found a vacated premises and no job. Even if she stayed, there was no way to make a living. She had no place to go and no place to return to.

The sound of shattering glass knocked Penny out of her self-pity, momentarily. Her life went from down in the gutter, to absolutely worth saving, with the racket of a major brawl having broken out behind her.

Penny looked around her, trying to identify the best place to hold out until the fight -- obviously a bunch of bikers -- was over. Without any warning, a pair of rough and powerful hands hoisted her at her waist and lifted her to the bar counter.

“Here Stan. Take care of her,” said the stranger, who then rescinded into the whirlwind of scuffling.

Penny laid eyes on the man who saw to her safety. A bronzy complexion that had the light of the Badlands on it. She had never been to the Badlands. It was one of the places she had hoped to check out now that she moved here.

Too bad she was leaving.

Her rescuer was absolutely spectacular. Hair dark and rich and straight as a plumb line. Poor thing, Penny clicked, his t-shirt was way too small. His muscles all but exploded out of the worn fabric that encased it.

“Get down,” ordered Stan, who was the bartender and obliged the handsome stranger’s request. He reached under the counter for a sports whistle and blew it with everything he had while Penny sat on rubber bar mats that were not quite dry.

When the whistle didn’t work, Stan broke out a firearm. Penny watched as he was careful to aim it in a specific way, very decidedly away from the hub of the violence. When she focused, she could see that this would not be the first shot fired in that direction. She tugged on the cuff of his pants.

“Yes?” he asked agitatedly.

“Why don’t you call the cops?” she shouted.

“Because these are friends of mine,” he said as though her suggestion was unspeakable.

Stan was hesitant but then as the destruction was more nonstop and less sporadic, he pulled the trigger. His gunfire literally backfired. He set off a relay of gunfire in response to his.

While Stan was distracted by monitoring the fight from behind the bar, Penny covertly dialed 911. Friends or no, she was not going to be gunned down minutes after finding out she was about as stupid as stupid could be.

Within minutes cops were raiding Joe's. The fight actually got uglier once the police arrived. The sounds of bodies being struck by billy clubs were awful. Penny didn't think they used them anymore
.

She saw the cops were cuffing people too
.

"Hey Stan, what gives?" Gorgeous managed to say before she grabbed him and backed him in a corner
.

Penny knew immediately that she had done the wrong thing by calling. Her call may have stopped the fight but now everyone was being hauled away and no one was drinking at Average Joe's. She felt awful
.

Gorgeous was kind enough to rescue her so she was going to rescue him back
.

She grabbed him by the scruff of his shirt, quickly, and guided him through the swinging door to the kitchen. She wrapped her arms around his neck after coaxing his arms around her.

"You can thank me later," she said before planting one on him
.

At first her kiss was part of an acting job, simply a device for creating an alibi so that she could swear to the cops he had nothing to do with it. But then it became something else
.

This man was hot, and together they were smoking hot. His biceps were like curves of steel pressing around her. His mouth was sweet and the way he reciprocated -- didn't object a bit -- was something Penny had only ever dreamed of. Or read about
.

He commandeered the kiss, slowing it down to a blistering pace. He transformed it from a prop to help sell the story to the cops that he had nothing to do with the brawl, because he was with her.

The excitement of the fight and the kiss woke up the full effect of the tequila. She had never tested her tolerance for liquor before but she was nicely surprised. She had a pretty good tolerance. She just suffered an unexpected side effect. Penny Dunlap was officially high and horny
.

He broke the kiss.

“Maybe we should introduce ourselves,” he murmured
.

“It doesn’t matter,” she said. “As long as you’re safe from the cops.

He suppressed a laugh
.

“What’s so funny?” she demanded
.

“It’s just the word ‘cops’ coming out of your beautiful little mouth doesn’t quite fit,” he said
.

“Why is that?” Her eyes narrowed
.

He brushed her nose with the soft swipe of his index finger.

“You’re just a little...sweet,” he said after searching for the right word. “I mean you have your sweet little suit on. You have very, mm--”

“Sweet?” She raised her eyebrow.

“Sweet shoes. Yes indeed,” he had a wicked look in his eye, “very sweet.”

“And?” she asked.

“Baby doll, this is what is known as a biker bar. It’s a bar. For bikers. It’s not my first day and I have ta say, you don’t belong here. So I gotta ask you. What brought you here?”

What brought her there, indeed. Penny took a deep breath. The thought of what had led her to stopping everything in her life after it was absolutely ruined, and step into the first place she could to have a drink. Oh it had been a really bad day.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” she said.

He stuck his bottom lip out. “Okay, I guess,” he said, encouraging her to change her mind with a look. “Please tell me your name?”

“It’s Penny,” she replied reluctantly.

“What brings you to Parshall?” he asked.

“The same thing that has me leaving,” she quipped, finding her mojo for a moment.

He winked. “Oh shit. What a spunky reply. I knew there was some sass in there. I think I tapped into a little bit of it out there in the bar. Pretty Penny,” he said. “Got a last name or do I have to stick to my nickname?”

Penny hesitated.

He raised his eyebrows. “You just stuck your tongue in my mouth. And you won’t tell me who you are?” He clicked his tongue. “Such a shame. You are breaking my heart. You don’t have to be afraid of me. I won’t bite you, unless you want me to.” He took her head in his hands and kissed the top of it.

Penny turned her head. If she could clear it for just a moment and think, she would admit it wasn’t fear she was feeling. This gorgeous man had had her feeling pure, unfiltered arousal.

“Okay,” he shrugged. “Have it your way.”

He stepped back and shook her hand. Stan popped his head in the kitchen.

“Coast is clear,” he said.

The poor bartender’s face was tight. Penny highly suspected that Stan was showing major restraint. He took a second to look her in the eye before shaking his head. He closed the door, disappearing back to the bar.

“Oh my,” deduced Gorgeous. “Pretty Penny, did you have something to do with the, um, cops being called?”

Penny blushed. But didn’t answer.

“Oh, you did,” he said. He shook his head. “Well, well. It was certainly nice meeting you. I am going to help Stan clean up. If Stan lets you back in the joint, I do hope to see you again.”

Seized with a newfound fearlessness, Penny grabbed him.

“I’m at the Parshall Motor Lodge, and,” she stammered.

“And?” he asked.

“And I would really like it if you spent the night with me.”

She couldn’t believe those words even came out of her mouth. But the guy was so gorgeous, she couldn’t help it.

Chapter Two

The moon fell on the flat, flat earth of Parshall. It looked like a porch light as Penny and Gorgeous stepped outside of Average Joe’s.

He entwined her hand with his. “Baby doll, I’d love to be your thang tonight but you have got to tell me your name or that is not even a consideration. And believe me when I say, it pains me to say that.”

“Penny Dunlap,” she said.

“Danny White Feather.” He stepped very close to her and kissed her slowly. “Where to, Pretty Penny?”

“Parshall Motor Lodge,” she murmured.

“Well see now, that’s not far. Are you okay to drive, assuming you did?”

“I walked over,” she said. “I can just walk back. You can drive your car over.”

“I don’t blame you for not wanting to get in the car with a stranger and fortunately, my car is a Harley but baby doll, you do not want to be walking in Parshall after dark. This here is not a nice little old town. Not with these boomers.”

She stopped and thought.

“I can’t really ride on the back of your bike. I never have ridden a bike before but I am not exactly dressed for it,” she said.

“You haven’t seen much biker art now have you?” He grinned wickedly. “Tell you what. I’m walking you over and then I’ll come back for her.”

“Her?” Penny asked.

“My bike,” he said and kissed her softly.

It took just a few minutes for them to walk to her room, which had an outside entrance. Penny freshened up while she waited for him. She didn’t really pack anything sexy, since she was having her stuff shipped out. So she stripped to her panties and put on a robe. When she heard the unmistakable growl of the Harley she knew he had returned.
