“Three hundred,”
Alena said.

“Dollars? She sold
herself as a slave for three hundred measly dollars!”

“Three hundred
thousand dollars. For two months, Dallas.”

“Oh,” I said.
“Oh.”

That was more than
what Blaze would bring.

I stood up from my
log and walked half way from our little encampment. “I could never do that,
Alena. I could never give myself to anyone as a slave. I’m too independent. I
have my own stubborn side and I’m not into sex like you are. I mean … who knows
what they would do, right? They could do anything. They could want anything and
I wouldn’t have any say.”

“That’s kind of
the point. That’s why they’re willing to pay so much … well that and…”

“And what?”

Alena shrugged.
She lowered her head as if she were in deep thought.

“I don’t know. I
don’t really get the and part. Marissa said that her master told her that he
was willing to pay so much because he knew she’d want to stay forever. He was
so sure of it that he kept bidding. It turned out to be true. She’s home now,
but she wants to go back to him. She says she can’t live without him. She’s in
love with him.”

“Wait? Bidding?” I
asked, ignoring the rest of what she said. My brain was stuck on that part
because it was the most preposterous thing yet.

“Oh, yeah. I guess
I didn’t tell you that part. They sold her at an auction in their barn.” Alena
laughed. I didn’t see what was funny. “Kind of like we do with livestock.” She
started making her circles in the dirt again. “Her dad was the one who found
the group. That’s the way they do it. They have an entire exclusive club of
rich men who buy young women to serve them. That’s one of the reasons I would
be willing to do it. These guys aren’t creeps … well, most of them aren’t.
Moran’s in the club, but Marissa said that most of the ones that came to the auction
were dreamy.”

“I think I’ve
heard enough, Alena. I’m not going to do that. It’s not an option.” I walked
away from her little fire, sure that I was going to keep walking.

“You would go for
more than Marissa did,” Alena said, matter of fact. “You’re hotter and you’re a
virgin. I guess that makes a difference.”

“I’m not for sale.
I’m not a pig. I’m not a goat. I’m not a thoroughbred.”

“Beg to differ on
that one,” Alena said, challenging me. “Think most guys would agree with me.
You’re every bit of a thoroughbred.”

“I am not!” I
said, firmly.

“Moran’s planning
on putting Blaze down, you know. I wanted to tell you before, but I knew if I
did, you would never sell him. You’d lose the farm first.”

I spun on her. “He
wouldn’t. Blaze is immaculate. Perfect! He’d be throwing away a mint in
breeding commissions.”

“He doesn’t want
Blaze. He wants you. He’ll give you an ultimatum tomorrow. If he buys Blaze, it
will only be to put him down. It’s you or nothing.”

“Fuck that, Alena!”
I spat. “I’m not worth that much to that fat fucker. Blaze will give him what
he wants. He’ll take Blaze over me.”

“My brother
overheard him talking. He still works there part time.”

I turned back
around. I had to. I needed to think.
Crap! Crap, crap, crap! Why did I have
to come here?
It was too much and I couldn’t deal with it. I had to go.
