Chapter Eight

Selena wasn’t sure why she had agreed to seeing Ethan. Maybe she was still hopeful that he would come around, they could be a real family, and he would make her happy beyond belief. And then she would wake up and realize that she had been dreaming and her house of gold she had been building was really made out of straws. She wasn’t sure why he even wanted to come, but she had just said yes to get him away from her.

She stepped from the shower, grabbed the towel from the bar, and ruffled her still damp hair with it. Then she shook her head like a shaggy dog and used her fingers to comb through the tangled mess. Luckily for her she didn’t have terribly crumpled hair, so it smoothed itself out without her having to do much. She circled the robe around her trim body and walked back into the living room to pour the coffee she could tell by the smell was ready. She took one sip and was about to walk back to the bedroom when she heard the doorbell. She stopped and then looked down at her present attire. Oh well! He had already seen the worst of her.

She went to admit him, the coffee mug still within her grasp as she stood facing him. He sniffed and then took one look at the cup. “Why are you drinking that?” He asked as he took the cup from her hand.

“What?” She asked as she tried to take the cup from him. She followed him all the way to the kitchen where he deposited the contents into the sink and folded his arms as he stood looking reproachfully at her. “Why did you do that?”

“Caffeine?” He asked as if he expected her to understand what he was saying. When she didn’t seem to, he shook his head and walked off. “You are pregnant, and caffeine isn’t a healthy choice for either you or the baby.”

It was Selena’s turn to be shocked. “Excuse me, but when did Maury name you the father?” she asked.

“Don’t be like that Selena,” he said guiltily. “I never denied the baby.”

“It would have been better that you had denied the baby rather than suggesting abortion,” she spat as she moved past him.

He held onto her arm and stopped her in her tracks. “Selena, it was wrong of me to even suggest that, but at the time I was confused, and Eva...”

“Eva?” she asked. “What does she have to do with any of this?”

“She has everything to do with this,” he said as he raked his hand through his hair and walked to the sofa. “Come here,” he said as he patted the seat next to him.

Selena paused for a moment, not sure if she should stand her ground or do as he said. Then, she slowly made her way over to him. “Okay, what is it? I can see something is eating you up.”

“I don’t even know where to begin,” he said as he let his head fall on the back of the sofa. “I got married in a hurry, sort of because it was good for business. My dad thought she would make a good ‘accessory,’ and I could score better deals if the business community perceived me as stable. What a schmuck I was to fall for that.”

“So did it work?” Selena queried.

“All too well. She was by my side so much so that some of the men wouldn’t even sign some of my deals if she wasn’t there to co-sign. Her name is on some of the biggest deals I’ve made, and now I have to rely on her every now and again when I need to change anything, or even to pull out of anything. She knows she has me by the balls, and she yanks them whenever she feels a mind. Now that we are getting a divorce, I have to be playing nice so that she can gently relinquish her hold on some of these business mergers and get out of my life.”

“So what is the problem?” Selena asked. She wasn’t sure where he was going with all of this.

“Don’t you see? She is stalling just so she can find something, any reason, to bring me down. If she finds out about this baby, I’m done. We haven’t yet finalized the divorce, so she will quite possibly play the adultery card, and what judge or jury won’t side with her?”

“But you know that isn’t true; we only started seeing each other after divorce proceedings were under way.”

“And who is going to believe that? All they will see is a woman who was wronged by some rich guy who is trying to have his own way with women and doesn’t want to suffer the consequences. They will rake me over the coals,” he said as he sighed. Then he turned to her and looked at her tenderly. He caught a wisp of her hair that was flowing too closely to her eyes and set it back with the black bundle atop her head. “I’ve always loved the way you look with your hair out like this,” he smiled. “Selena, you have to believe me; when you told me about the baby, I saw Eva sinking me. That is all I could see.”

Selena listened attentively to all he said, and she sympathized. Now that she knew the whole story, she understood why he had acted the way he did. “But you were always flirting with women; wouldn’t that have hurt you as well?”

“Not so much. We both engaged in subtle indiscretions, but as long as she got what she wanted, then she was fine. A baby would mean less for her, and it suggested an heir.”

“Oh,” Selena mouthed.

“Yes,” he said as he saw she finally understood where he was coming from. “So I didn’t mean it when I said...”

“It’s alright,” Selena said as she stopped him from saying the dreaded words again. “I get it. It didn’t make sense based on the man I used to be with who showed me more tender moments, but I get it now. So, what are we going to do?”

“For starters, we are not going to get an abortion,” he said as he smiled at her for the first time in weeks.

Selena smiled too, inwardly this time. Then she got up, went to her room, and returned with an envelope. “Here,” she said as she handed it to him.

“What is it?” he asked even as he began opening it.

“Just open it,” she said as a smile spread across her face as bright as day.

“Alright,” he said as he took the thin film of paper from the envelope and produced the image of their baby’s from the ultrasound. “Is this what I think it is?” He asked as he stared at the piece of art.

“That’s our baby’s first picture,” she said as she bit her lips in ecstatic bliss. “You didn’t look the last time I tried to show it to you.”

Ethan stared at the picture for a considerable time before looking up at her, and then back at the picture. Selena felt a small measure of joy as she watched him, and for a second her fairytale flashed before her eyes. She stood there as he got up and gave the image back to her. “I was wrong to do that.”

She looked as radiant as a new day, and he inhaled her scent as he closed his eyes and remembered the feel of her skin against his hardened body, the taste of her lips on his. His eyes suddenly turned glassy as desire began to rise in him. Selena could feel his energy, and as much as she tried to deny it, she knew she wanted him too. She didn’t move or retaliate as he held her, and her body came alive as she felt his semi-erect manhood pressing against the cotton of her robe. His breathing grew shallower as he brought his lips down on her welcoming ones, and as they locked, she was almost sure somewhere a choir of angels was singing the halleluiah chorus.

She reached up and gripped the back of his head as she held him in place, and she played along as his tongue explored the inner workings of her mouth. Ethan found the small of her back as he tightened his hold on her, and their breaths mingled as they ravaged each other like rabid animals. Finally, he pulled back and untied the knot on her robe. Then he rested his hands on her shoulders and brought them outwards as he watched the cloth slide from her body to reveal perfect ebony skin. He leaned forward and kissed her shoulder, then her neck, then the base of her throat before climaxing at her throbbing lips once more. Not easily content, he let her stand there as he moved down to her ripe twins, now slightly bigger than before, and ran his tongue in circles around each in a slow methodical fashion.

Selena moaned as she gripped a handful of his hair, even as he moved away and down the expanse of her body. Her abdomen had grown just a little, but enough to be noticeable, and her insides tingled as she watched him pause and kiss the spot, before he dipped lower and let his tongue trace the outline of her secret place. Then he used both thumbs to part her curtains before licking on her now erect clit. Selena shuddered as he drove her wild down south, and as she trembled, he parted her legs and lapped the juices that had started to trickle from her eternal spring. She could feel his warm tongue flicking in and out of her, but she was grateful when he stood and lifted her, bringing her to rest on the sofa.

She was made to sit just at the edge, and he held her legs wide open as he sucked what seemed to be the color off of her skin. He then slid his middle finger inside her, while using both his thumb and his tongue to lick the outer parts of her walls. Selena could take no more, and she begged him to take her before she went mad. Ethan had a wild look about him as his pants disappeared in a flash, and his now pulsating member danced its way inside her welcoming body. He entered her slowly at first, too aware of her pregnant state, but as the sensations overtook him, he went faster. Her screams made him bolder as he dug further and deeper inside her, gripping the arms of the sofa as he grew weak in the knees.

It had been too long since he had tasted of her sweet pleasures, and he now feasted on her extensive buffet. Selena wrapped her legs around him and moved her hips to his rhythm as he stroked hard. His hands cupped her breasts, and his moans started to sound like an enraged bull as he began pumping harder. Selena could tell he was close to a climax when he held her hips and began moving from side to side, rocking her as her walls clamped onto him. Soon, all that could be heard were the sounds of their lovemaking as his strokes grew swifter and their sounds matched in intensity. Soon, his eyes bulged, and he bit his lips as he filled her with his love, and she held onto him as she received it all.

He held her there until it was over, and he was done, before he let her legs fall, and his body followed in like manner next to her on the sofa. Neither knew the day would have come when they would be like this again, and as he looked at her and she returned his sympathies, they knew it would not be their last.

Chapter Nine

They lay there wrapped in each other’s arms as the morning sun peeped through the curtains. Ethan hadn’t wanted to leave after they made love the evening before, so they had spent the night making dinner and watching old movies. He felt like the Ethan of old, but Selena couldn’t help wondering if he would revert to his old ways once more and start acting like the womanizer he was famous for being. Her thoughts had completely taken a turn, and it became obvious to him as he watched her face twitch and her brows dip as they made impressions on her face.

“Are you alright?” He asked out of concern.

She looked over at him as if in a daze. “What do you mean?”

He touched her nose with his index finger. “That,” he said. “Your mind seemed to be elsewhere just now.”

“Oh,” she said and a slight blush began to rise to her cheeks. “It’s just that I am not sure what you will do next. You are hot this minute, and then you are cold the next; now we are romantic lovers, and another time it is as if I don’t exist. I would like for you to choose a side,” she said as she tried to get out of bed.

“Choose a side?” He asked. “I thought I already did,” he said as he pulled her back down and kissed her shoulder. “Where are you going in such a hurry?”

“I need to get ready for work; I do need to make a living.”

“I can tell you a secret,” he whispered. “I don’t think the boss would mind if you were late this morning,” he winked.

Selena smiled at him. “He might not, but it may cause others to wonder and make him appear biased.”

“Forget what everyone thinks, will you?” He asked.

“That is so hypocritical,” she retorted. “How many times have you tried to sweep me under the rug?”

“That was only because of Eva,” he admitted. “She has her spies everywhere.”

“And yet you are here in plain view,” she said.

“Sometimes one must take a gamble on the off chance the tables might turn in your favor,” he grinned. “Anyway, I need to get going as well; I have a business breakfast at nine, and I need to get home first.”

Selena sat there silently as she watched him wash up. He grabbed a towel and rubbed it aggressively over his face to dry it. When he held his head up again, he saw her watching him intensely. “What?” He asked.

“What happens when you walk out the door?” She asked in a low voice.

He came over and sat next to her. “You don’t have to worry anymore,” he said as he touched a lock of her hair. “I intend to take care of you and our child fully. If there is anything you need, just say it.”

“What does that mean, anything?” she asked. “Stuff for the baby?”

“Anything,” he said. “Dinner, dancing, doctor visits, boat ride, a jet,” he chuckled. “Anything you need.”

Selena was blown away by the gesture he was now making. “Wow, I feel overwhelmed.”

“Don’t be. There is one condition though. I cannot let Eva get her hands on anything that can ruin me, so please, in that regard, I would like for us to keep this baby a secret for now. That will not have to be the case after the divorce is final and she is gone for good.”

“Oh, no, that won’t be a problem. Megan has been breathing down my neck at work. She suspects something is going on with me and keeps following me around. The other day I went to the ladies’ room, and there she was again. I was feeling nauseous, and she quizzed me after about the strange smell in the bathroom.”

“Hmm,” he mused. “Maybe I could have her transferred to another location.”

“No, don’t do that,” Selena said as her eyes peeled from her head. She could hardly believe he would make such a suggestion. “That would only raise more suspicions. Soon there won’t be anything to hide as this little one grows, and I don’t have to tell anyone it is your baby. Perhaps I am the one who needs to be transferred.”

“No, no, no,” he said as he rejected her suggestion. “I want you where I can keep an eye on you and our baby,” he said.

Selena smiled. “Okay, so we are agreed.”

“Yes. For now, this is just between us.”

“And what about the other women who keep dancing their way into your office and onto your arm?” She asked like a jealous woman.

“You are cute when you are jealous,” he said as he pinched her chin and moved past her.

“I am serious,” she said as she threw a mini tantrum. “You said anything.”

“Things aren’t always as they seem,” he replied.

“What does that mean?”

“It means don’t worry about anything. I will see you later,” he said as he placed a lasting kiss on her lips. Selena’s eyes remained closed even after he had pulled away.

“Later,” she said when she finally opened them and saw him there smiling at her. She accompanied him to the door and stood there as she watched him walk to his car. He had made a bold move in coming over, and now she was glad she had allowed him to. She closed the door and returned to the bed where she fell backwards onto the cottony fabric. Her hand involuntarily went to her stomach as she felt her little one growing there, and she couldn’t help but be teleported to the land of blissful euphoria Ethan had just introduced her to.

She was slow in getting ready, but she still wanted to be early.  Ethan Bloomfield was an on time sort of man, and he groomed his employees the same way; he didn’t tolerate tardiness. If Selena were to start turning up whenever she felt like, or just because he allowed her to, then that would set tongues wagging even more than before. Especially under the circumstances, she needed to stay below the radar.

She could feel Megan’s eyes on her as she walked through the door with ten minutes to spare. She kept her eyes trained on her desk as she headed there, and she was grateful she didn’t choose then to harass her. Selena still wore regular clothes so there was no reason for anyone to suspect her pregnancy, and in that she was comfortable for the moment. She turned on the computer and started clicking keys, then jumped as she heard a sudden loud vibrating sound coming from her left.

“God damn it,” she whispered as she grabbed the phone up. “You almost gave me a heart attack,” she said to Krystal as she answered.

“I wonder why, since I am the one suffering from the same now,” she said accusingly.

“What are you talking about,” Selena asked.

“Was that Ethan’s car at your house this morning?” She almost shouted.

“Shh,” Selena said as she got up from her desk and walked to the lobby area where it was less populated. “And yes it was,” she said as she bit her lower lip at the memory.

“How did you get from wanting to burn him at the stake to sleeping with him? It was sleeping with him that got you here in the first place.”

“Look, he cornered me into agreeing for him to come over. I said yes just to get away from him.  When he came, we talked, he explained his behavior, and I sort of understood why he was being so unkind, or why he appeared to be rather.”

“Which is?” Krystal quizzed.

“He has an ongoing legal battle with his soon to be ex-wife, and she can have the company taken away from him, or his biggest deals, whichever is worse, if she feels threatened. A baby is a threat enough, so he panicked. I guess he got enough time to think...good morning Mrs. Caldwell,” Selena said as she saw one of the partners walking past her. She looked around and made sure she was alone before continuing. “He got enough time to think, and now he is ready to do the right thing, except that we have to keep it a secret until everything is settled.”

Krystal was silent for a moment. “Okay,” she said. “And you are okay with all of that right?”

“What can I do under the circumstances? Plus he offered me anything I needed or wanted, including a jet,” she giggled. “I think that was just for emphasis.”

Krystal laughed too. “I’d take it,” she agreed. “Well, seems everything is peachy with you two, so I’ll go about my boring life. By the way, weren’t you supposed to be at an appointment today or tomorrow or something like that?”

Selena paused as she reflected on what Krystal had just said. “What date is it today?” She asked nervously.

“The fifteenth,” Krystal confirmed.

“You are right,” Selena said aloud and then retrained her voice to a whisper. “It is today. I totally forgot. I need to go,” she said.

Krystal laughed. “Yes, you need to. Later, and take care of my nephew.”

“Will do,” Selena smiled as she rushed back into the office. She raced to her desk as she looked at the time and saw she had thirty minutes to drive across town to visit her OBGYN. “Hey, will you please tell Mr. Bloomfield I had an emergency and had to leave? I will be back as soon as possible,” she said to the receptionist.

The woman looked at her strangely. “Is everything alright?” She asked.

“Yes. It is something personal I need to take care of this morning. Please pass on the message for me,” she told the woman as she rushed to the door.

“Where are you going in such a hurry?” She heard Megan ask from behind her.

“None of your business,” Selena said. She often entertained her, if even with rude come backs, but she wasn’t in the mood for it this morning. She raced to the elevator and pressed the button several times as if that would bring it any faster. She was a nervous wreck as she tried to navigate her way through the slowly building morning traffic. She couldn’t miss her appointment as it would be difficult to get a date before next week, and after last night, she needed to know their baby was doing fine.

She happened to get to her appointment five minutes before her name was called. Doctor Matthews was as cheerful as ever. “You seem breathless,” she said.

“I almost forgot our appointment, so I feel like I ran all the way here,” Selena replied.

The woman laughed. “Okay, now that you are here, let’s get started. She pressed and poked and dug around Selena’s body, until she smiled and informed her that they were both doing fine, and she need not worry, but should take it easy. “Don’t leave yourself so winded next time, and if you happen to forget an appointment, I am sure we can work something out.”

“Thanks Dr. Matthews,” she said as she hugged the woman before she left. Ordinarily she wouldn’t have done that, but she was feeling exceptionally good this morning. She floated to her car, all the way with thoughts of yachting and jetting to exquisite locations chosen by Ethan. She never dreamed she would be experiencing anything of the sort, and she looked forward to all she imagined. She remembered what it was like when she dated Ethan, and she knew he would keep his promise. Things were looking up, and she didn’t think anything would get in the way of it, but life had a funny way of unfolding.
