(1888–1965).
Dutch Christian missionary and missiologist. In 1928, he was part of the delegation to the Missionary Conference at Jerusalem which remained deeply critical of that Conference's attempt to find a new relation with non-Christian religions on the basis of shared values. In 1937, he became Professor of Comparative Religion at Leiden and prepared the discussion document for the successor Missionary Conference at Tambaram, in 1938. This ‘document’ is his classic work,
The Christian Message in a Non-Christian World
. Based strongly on the unequivocal theology of Karl
Barth
, Kraemer argued that Christianity is a consequence of the act of God, issuing in biblical demand, whereas other religions are the consequence of the human religious quest. Between the two there is a radical discontinuity.

. Many of his sermons were printed posthumously in

(The Tent of Jacob: 4 vols., 1830, 1837, 1859, 1863). He was a brilliant story-teller who was called by Moses
Mendelssohn
‘the Jewish Aesop'—though few of his stories or parables involved animals.
