Manning, Henry Edward
(1808–92).
Roman Catholic
cardinal
. Initially an Anglican and
archdeacon
of Chichester, he became attracted to the
Oxford Movement
and wrote Tract 78 of
Tracts for the Times
. Following the Gorham Judgement in 1851, he became a convert to Roman Catholicism, and (his wife having died in 1837) he was ordained priest. He founded the Oblates of St Charles Borromeo, and became archbishop of Westminster in 1865. He was
ultramontane
in his sympathies and a strong defender of papal
infallibility
. In 1889, he mediated successfully in a dock strike. He was buried in Kensal Green cemetery, but was reburied in Westminster Cathedral which he had helped to found.

in N. Irian Jaya. These derive from the myth of Manseren. In a typical version, an ugly culture hero, Manamakerei, secured a wife and son by magical means, called himself Manseren Manggundi (‘the Lord himself’) and created the local peoples. They rebelled against him so he departed westwards but will return to begin a golden age or Koreri (‘we replace our old skins by new ones’).
