(Jap., ‘great lord of the land’). An important
Shinto
kami
. Originally a major local kami of Izumo Province (now Shimane Prefecture), he was incorporated into the national Shinto mythology by the time of the compilation of
Kojiki
(712), in which he plays a prominent part. The
Izumo no Kuni fudoki
(Gazetteer of Izumo Province, 733) shows that he was viewed in Izumo as the creator of the world and as an agricultural kami. The chief shrine to
kuninushi is the Izumo Taisha in Taishamachi, Shimane Prefecture, one of the oldest shrines in Japan.
