P’o
.
Component in Chinese anthropology, one of two spiritual elements in the human (the other being
hun
). P’o is associated with the dark and passive side, i.e.
yin
; and at death, the p’o returns to the earth. With the p’o is associated the
kuei
, which represents the unsettled and vengeful element of p’o in some circumstances of death: for details see
SHEN

Pocomania
or Pukkumina
(possibly from Span., ‘a little madness’). Afro-Jamaican cults descended from surviving forms of African religion mixed with
Protestant
elements from the time of the Great Revival in Jamaica in 1860–2. They take the form of small local ‘bands’ led by a ‘Captain’, ‘Mother’, or ‘Shepherd/ess’ who lives at and rules over the band's Yard. Pocomania passes over into ancestor-spirit cults on one side, and into
Revival Zion
on the other, and some adherents belong to the Christian churches.
Pogrom
(Russ.,
gromit
, ‘destroy’). An attack involving looting, murder, and rape by one sector of the population on another. More precisely, the term pogrom has been used to describe attacks against the Jews, specifically between 1880 and 1920 in Russia and Poland.
Pole, Reginald
(1500–58).
Cardinal
and last
archbishop
of
Canterbury
(to date) in communion with Rome. After the accession of Mary Tudor to the English throne, Pole was sent as papal legate. He arrived in 1554, received the country back into communion with Rome, and instituted a number of reforms, though his desire to restore church lands aroused great hostility. In 1556 he was appointed to Canterbury. He died just twelve hours after the death of Queen Mary.
