li Pacceka). In Buddhism, one who attains the condition next to that of
arhat
entirely on his own. He has no teacher and does not belong to the

, and he makes no attempt to communicate his way or his attainment to anyone else. He is therefore known as the Solitary or Silent Buddha, and is described as ‘a lonely rhinoceros’.

‘Going forth’ from home, the determination to renounce the world and undertake an
ascetic
way. It is characteristic of Jains, but applies also to Hindus.
