. Samuel was descended from generations of scholars. He was a prolific writer, although most of his works are now lost. Among his writings mentioned by later authorities were an introduction to the

. Jewish biblical and

commentator. A grandson and student of
Rashi
, Samuel lived in France. He produced a commentary on the Bible which is notable for its preference for the literal meaning of the text (

), even when this opposes

. He also supplemented Rashi's commentary on the Talmud and wrote
tosafot
on various tractates. He was a noted composer of
piyyutim
and wrote a grammatical work,
