The most usual name for the Congregation of the Mission (CM), a Roman Catholic religious order founded by St Vincent de Paul in 1625. He had been moved by the plight of a poor woman in 1617, and established Les Dames de Charité, an early expression of organized charity. From this developed Les Filles de la Charité, who, in addition to collecting money, committed themselves to service. As dispensers of charity and as missionaries, they are also known as Lazarists, from the priory of St. Lazare, Vincent's headquarters in Paris.
