1320–95).
Greek theologian and mystical writer in the Orthodox Church. He wrote
An Exposition of the Divine Liturgy
and
Life in Christ
, both of which exerted an influence long after his death. In the former he makes the worship on earth an anticipation of the worship in heaven; the connection is real, since the participation in the
sacraments
is not merely symbolic. In the latter, the incarnate life of Christ is continued into the lives of the faithful through the sacraments, leading into union with God. He was canonized in 1983; feast day, 20 June.

Cayce, Edgar
(1877–1945).
The ‘Sleeping Prophet’, an American psychic healer and clairvoyant. For the last thirty or so years of his life, Cayce gave some 14,000 ‘readings’ throughout the USA. He saw his gifts as spiritual in origin, and used them to aid those ‘who seek to know better their relationship to their Maker’.
Cecilia, St
(2nd–3rd cent.).
A perhaps legendary virgin martyr of the Roman church. Her
Acts
date from the 5th cent., and she is unknown to earlier writers. Since the 16th cent. she has been best known as patron saint of music and musicians. Feast day, 22 Nov.
