“That much I already know,” Conway said.

“It’s been two months since then, we have
done a great deal to protect the Forts and help anyone residing
within them,” Lewis said.

“We have secured the Fort from the ocean,
with steel fence all the way down to the bottom, it’s not much and
certainly not a big area but it’s big enough for clothing to be
washed,” Lewis said.

“We used the tents you found for temporarily
living quarters, homes are being constructed by the day either with
wood or cement, beside from that we have enough sun panels to
supply every house hold with electricity, here and at Key West,
soon we will have wind turbines to,” Lewis said.

Lewis explained to Conway in full detail with
the improvements they have made, they have put up 6 towers here
alone, guarded by trained soldiers and a total of 12 in Key West.
Many survivors made it through this struggle yet many died, though
everyone is surprised of the mass amounts that pushed through in
this terrible time.

We lost a lot of men defending areas and
taking the fight back to them, this virus came so fast none of us
were prepared, the entire world was unprepared, we managed to find
food, water we even have our own small water purification
plant.

We have weapons to defend the survivors and
any that are willing to join us, as long as they can follow the
rules and regulations, if failed to do so we have holding cells, if
they have done something terrible they will be exiled.

Besides from power, we have a lot of animal
barns, though they are clean they are not ready to be butchered
yet, a stable breeding plan must be accomplished first.

This base works efficiently as to earn
different food and amounts you will have to work for it, take it
like a new currency for time be, do a good job, do something
important and we will reward you with good food, power, free
housing including clean water.

It happens to be that I have the perfect job
for you, I want you to be a teacher, I want you to teach all the
rookies, the young and old anyone still willing to put up a good
fight, though we don’t see much action here after we blew the
bridge, I don’t want you to just teach I want you to observe these
things everything that’s infected.

“If you agree to this you can then return to
your tent,” Lewis said.

“Or what you will exile me?” Conway
asked.

“No you won’t get payment, you will starve,
or you will live like a hobo, live of other peoples garbage,” Lewis
said.

“Beside you have people waiting for you at
your tent,” Lewis said smiling.

“I will do it, not much else I can do with
just one leg,” Conway said.

The general drew out a small map for Conway
to get around the base, marking down all the important places, the
doctors, food and water storages and living quarters.

As Conway moved slowly between the tents, he
realized that the people are happy, they are laughing, kids are
playing, he even passed a tent with kids were learning, not how to
fight but actual math’s, English, all the important stuff, while
the adults work.

Arriving at his tent, very neat, big and
impressive, the very first thing that brought tears to his eyes was
to see that his wife actually survived, she is looking good and
healthy with Sally by her side, that must mean her grandmother
passed away recently.

“I thought I lost you,” Ashley said as she
ran over to Conway crying.

“I thought I lost you to, how are you
feeling?” Conway asked.

“Don’t worry about me, I was found just in
time, just like you, I was left with some broken ribs and lost a
lot of blood when they found me, they healed up pretty well,”
Ashley said as she shows Conway the horrible scars.

“I am just glad you made it, I felt like
killing myself when I woke up knowing I won’t see you again,”
Conway said.

“Like Emma said, don’t give up until it’s
over, Susan died a month ago, I figured I would do as we planned,
so I took in Sally,” Ashley said.

“You should get some rest those painkillers
really give a kick, I will even hold you, let you fall asleep
easier,” Ashley said.

“Honestly as much as I want to go rest, I am
too afraid to fall asleep, scared I might wake up and all of this
was just a bad dream,” Conway said.

“Trust me, it’s not a dream,” Ashley said,
helping Conway out of the wheel chair and into bed.

Ashley fell asleep right next to him, she was
really giving up hope, not because Conway was seriously injured but
due to the military not wanting to waste any resources on the
people already dying, it was a daily fight to keep Conway alive and
all that troubles was worth it, he made it through.

The very next day Conway went to work, in a
large tent, there were many students waiting for him, he was ready
to teach them all about the troubles they had to go through. He was
ready to teach them many things, how to avoid them, how to easily
kill them, if they were to be detected, how to distract them to
avoid conflict, the only thing he couldn’t answer was the questions
about Roy.

Roy was something else, he was a monster even
before he got infected and changed into that hideous beast, not
much is known about that transformation, it must be evolution, and
it’s tough, strong and fearsome Conway explained to his
students.

“His final words after each lesson he taught,
were, don’t give up until the problem is solved or entirely over,
The End,” Sally said.

“You know this is a true story about your
grandfather, this very book was written from the pages each
survivor wrote on his own, except for the bad men in the story,”
Sally said.

“I didn’t like this story one bit,” Melissa
said sad with tears in her eyes.

“It’s a true story, you know, it’s good to
learn from books like this,” Sally said.

“It’s too sad for me, I want happy endings,
when will this change?” Melissa asked.

“Well when there is important adventures then
they get added to the book and believe me I am certain there will
be many happy endings,” Sally said, smiling.

“When can I write in the book?” Melissa
asked.

“When you are old enough, when you had a
great adventure with great friends then your notes get added,”
Sally said.

“I have great adventures, I play, learn and
go to school,” Melissa said.

“Well, we are happy and we are living a good
life, this is all because of your grandfather, if he didn’t take
me, in you would’ve have never came to be, I would have never
survive to meet your father,” Sally said.

“You know what, you should go visit him, I am
sure he will be very happy to see you,” Sally said.

“Yay, that will be loads of fun!” Melissa
said, smiling as she runs out of the tent like a mad thing.

Sally was grateful for all the things Conway
and Ashley did for her, it’s been 18 years since that day, Sally
could only wish Ashley was still around, due to complications the
injuries caused, their happiness only lasted a total of four
years.

Conway never got remarried and never had
kids, I was their only adopted child, this war still rages on,
battle between the living and the dead and we have won some and
lost some. Here at the Forts it might be safe and everyone might be
happy, but out there it’s a brutal, a bloody warzone.

Bases and camps have raised everywhere across
the world, fighting at this very moment for their survival, the
survival of mankind. We have hope that our children and generations
after them will bring peace to the world.
