Volmer turned around and looked at Gus with a
deer in the headlights look. His glasses made the surprise in his
eyes even more pronounced… almost comical.

“What is up there? Why are you so scared of
it?” quizzed Gus, in the same low demanding tone, “Why have we been
flying instruments to study what ever is up there? Why the secrecy
about what we found at Roswell? What were those things that Jack
and I saw at Holloman? They weren’t really ‘captured’ German
aircraft, were they?”

Volmer’s eyes were suddenly fixed on
something in the sky as he began to answer, “Gus, I can’t tell you
anything else. General Lemay has insisted that I not tell you any
more. You must stop probing.”

Volmer started to show more concern about
what was in the sky and he changed the subject, “I am sorry Gus,
but what is this now?”

He pointed to what looked like a very high
flying aircraft.

Gus turned and looked at the very bright
object and commented, “I don’t know what that is. It is way too
bright to be aircraft lights. It almost looks like the way the sun
reflects from the polished aluminum of airplanes at dusk. But dusk
was over an hour ago.”

Volmer looked down and put his hand over his
mouth in an obvious thinking position.

He then made a motion with his hand like he
was thinking out loud about the curvature of the Earth, then looked
at his watch.

After he read the time he made a facial
expression that suggested,
yes, that is possible,
then he
started shaking his head yes.

There was a commotion at the campfire as
everyone else now saw the object passing over.

Under his breath, speaking under the volume
of the commotion, Gus again asked Volmer, just to see his
expression, “Is that them? Is that where those things are coming
from?”

Volmer turned, his face instantly showed
fright, “Gus, you can’t speak like this in front of the
others.”

“What is that thing in the Sky, Otmar?”

Volmer was surprised because Gus had never
addressed him by his first name before. He motioned for Gus to keep
it down and whispered, “Please Gus, keep this to yourself. I will
ask Lemay if I can share more with you because you are figuring out
way too much to keep you at bay much longer.”

“Promise?” insisted Gus.

Volmer looked relieved and with a face that
Gus could tell was sincere, answered, “Oh yes Gus, I promise.”

Then their conversation was interrupted by
Jack yelling, “Hey Gus do you see that thing?”

Gus turned and acted like nothing had
happened and answered Jack, with a smile, as he started to walk
towards the fire, “Yeah, I see it. What do you think it is?”

“Martians,” Jack suggested comically.

Gus returned, “Ya, they’re coming back to get
you. They must have forgotten you here at birth.”

The Cold War /
The Wave Of 52

People all over the world started to see the
bright object crossing the sky in the evenings.

Reports started piling up at many police and
Air Force switch boards across the country, as well as at official
reporting agencies in other parts of the world.

“Yes General Garland,” said Captain Ruppelt
as he stood in telephone booth on the street corner of some no name
rural American small town, “I have been following up on these
sightings for the last few days, as well as the other Blue Book
field investigators.

“I am in the middle of no where at this
moment taking statements.

“No sir, none of us have seen anything like
this since the wave of 47.

“No sir, General Lemay is always reserved
when talking about this subject to me. He doesn’t like talking to
anybody about his high tech intelligence gathering unit.

“Yes sir, I am aware that you and General
Samford have started a similar organization.

“Yes sir, and that yours is the officially
recognized unit.”

Ruppelt rolled his eyes and put his hand on
his brow as he listened for a few moments to the general’s
ranting.

He started pacing impatiently, looking both
ways down the street as he listened; obviously apathetic to what
the general was saying.

“Well general sir, since General Lemay will
not share any of the information that his unit has attained, would
it be possible to get a report of what your new organization has
found?

“Yes sir, I have a pen. Go ahead with that
number,” Ruppelt started to write on a note pad that he always kept
handy.

“Yes general, I will have a report on your
desk just as soon as we develop any answers for what these people
are reporting.”

“3 – 2 – 1 Ignition,” came a voice over the
intercom, as Von Braun and Volmer watched the take off of one of
the new Redstone rockets.

“This is exciting,” Von Braun spoke, “this is
the first time that I have tried to rendezvous with anything.”

“Well, Herr Von Braun,” answered Volmer, “It
is the closest that we will be able to come with the trajectory
formulas that we have been able to develop so far.”

“It is still the first time that I … or we,
have ever tried to accomplish anything like this.”

Volmer than replied, “It really doesn’t have
to get that close. All we need to do is have it get their
attention. Then if they are listening, they might hear the recorded
message that the rocket will be broadcasting.”

Von Braun then suggested, “It may also scare
them into the reality that we could also deliver a nuclear device
in the same manner.”

“Yes, that would be a very sobering epiphany
for anybody.”

Von Braun put down his binoculars and asked,
“So why is this message requesting them to contact General Lemay?
Why not refer them to the State Department, or some other civilian
entity; why the Air Force, and why Lemay?”

Volmer sighed and responded, “Herr Von Braun,
I have learned to stop trying to attach logic to the American’s
thought process. I just do as I am told. It seems to cause the
least trouble for everybody.”

Gus and Jack were standing with a group of
sailors around a small shack on a hillside overlooking the
ocean.

The naval instructor started his lesson,
“Gentlemen, we are here to learn how to calibrate and trouble-shoot
a hydro acoustic monitoring station.”

He then looked at the two and asked, “So why
are there two Air Force men in my naval equipment class?”

“Gus responded jokingly, “The Secretary of
the Air Force sent us to make sure you weren’t wasting money that
could have gone to the Air Force.”

The class laughed lightly as the instructor
smiled and responded, “Well, I guess that I will have to put on a
good show for you,”

The Instructor then looked at one of the navy
men in the class and joked, “I guess we’ll have to cancel the
dancing girls,” as the class responded with a sarcastic,
“AWWW.”

General Lemay was in civilian clothes sitting
at his home radio set. He continued calling at the pre planned call
sign and waited for a response.

Again and again he tried… to no avail.

After a few minutes, right when he was
getting ready to give up and turn it off, he heard a voice.

“Good evening general,” finally came a voice
over the radio.

“I shan’t tell you who I am, but let’s just
say that I was the visitor that left my calling card at White Sands
and Roswell,”

Lemay was surprised because the operator was
not using the correct radio jargon, and was speaking in a tone like
an overly dramatic narrator from a horror flick or play.

Lemay picked up the transceiver and spoke,
“We already know who you are. We also know where you live. Didn’t
you see us passing by both of your damn houses?”

Lemay, not knowing Schwerig’s arrogance and
style, was amazed again, as the voice continued in the same manner,
“Yes, and we are not too happy that you have discovered our rural
home. We really intended to stay off the beaten path. We would
greatly appreciate it if you would respect our privacy and not come
poking around like the dogs you let come over and do their business
in our old lawn.”

Lemay snapped back, “Yes, I noticed that they
didn’t come home for dinner, did you see where they went?”

“Oh, they’re just hanging around the old back
yard,” answered Schwerig.

Lemay then added, “Well I assume that because
you are talking to me now that you met our new delivery man, and he
delivered our message to you.”

“Yes, he was quite… behind the times, in
style.”

“Well, if you’re a thinking man, then you
have already come to the conclusion that he can still deliver
‘other packages’.”

“Yes, that possibility did not slip by us,
but you must have come to the conclusion as well that our home with
a view can deliver similar packages.”

Lemay then answered, “Yes, but one of our
dogs that passed by your house has a great sense of smell, and let
us know that you don’t have any packages quite like our
packages.”

“Oh, rest assured that we have different
packages altogether, and you are going to be quite surprised if you
were to ever give us a reason for us to deservingly gift you.”

Lemay thought for a few seconds to think of a
response in the idiotic language that they were speaking in, but he
continued to do so, just in case any body was listening.

The General then continued, “My relatives,
who have asked me to talk to you, don’t believe that you have any
packages at all. Even if you did, your family is far too small to
deliver packages to every one in my very large family. Don’t you
think? …Besides, my family is so generous, that we could send more
packages to your family than they would ever know what to do
with.”

Schwerig paused for a few moments and then
answered, “Well, perhaps it is time for a demonstration of my
family’s wonderful generosity… of course I will have to run that by
my family elders first, but I am fairly sure how they will
respond.”

*~*

Lemay responded, “We’ll be waitin’
neighbor.”

In the days and weeks after their
conversation, the level of reported sightings by military personal
skyrocketed:

The
Cold War / Encounter Over Arizona

1 May 1952

“Read em’ and weep boys,” bragged Jack, as he
threw his hand down onto the floor of the aft section of the B-36
that they were riding within.

The rest of the air crew in the game
protested in disgust, as one of them shouted, “Deal again.”

Gus, who was not in the game, chimed in,
“Look out boys, there’s a reason I don’t play cards with Jack
anymore.”

Jack sarcastically laughed, “Ha ha Gus,
you’re just a lousy player because you have a pathetic poker
face.”

Gus just smiled and looked out of the
fuselage gunner’s blister window, at the Arizona desert.
