Ian chuckled. “Yeah, who would have believed that we are going to be grazing sheep and cattle on the same land at the same time? We worked it out with Carlisle, Fenton, and Wilson, and the others came along. We’ll see if what Emerson said about grazing sheep and cattle together as being beneficial to both is right or not.”

“Emerson Booker was a smart man,” Hawke said. “Maybe one of the smartest men I ever knew. I expect if he said so, it’s true.”

“Did I tell you? The town’s voted to name the school after him,” Ian said.

“I can’t think of an honor Emerson would like more,” Hawke said.

“Board!” the conductor called.

The engineer rang the bell.

“Well, I’d better get on board,” Hawke said.

“Will you write to me, Uncle Mason?” Hannah asked.

Surprised, Hawke looked over at Cynthia as he said to Hannah, “What did you call me?”

“I called you Uncle Mason,” Hannah said with a broad smile.

“We told her,” Ian said. “I think she deserves to know that she has an uncle. Especially an uncle like you.”

Hawke nodded, then embraced Hannah, and then Cynthia. Then he shook hands with Ian and Jesse and climbed onto the train.

As the train pulled out of the station, Hawke leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes. All this time, he had thought he was totally alone in the world.

It was nice to know that he wasn’t.
