Many of you entered the A to Z Mysteries writing contest sponsored by Borders Books and
Parenting
magazine. For the contest, kids were asked to write a 300-word mystery featuring Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose. The title had to begin with a letter from P to Z. It was my job to choose the winner.
All of the stories I read were excellent, but I finally decided on
The Scary Skeleton
, by Andrew Stern. Congratulations, Andrew! Andrew is a second grader at Pomerado Elementary
School in Poway, California, and a fine writer. I visited him at his school and ate pizza with him, his principal, and his classmates. We had a lot of fun!
But the best part of my visit was when I presented Andrew with a special plaque from Borders Books. (In the photo, Andrew’s the one on the left!) Andrew’s family and friends were there to cheer him on. Now it’s up to me to use some of Andrew’s ideas in a new story for the A to Z Mysteries series.
I know that many of you love to write, because you tell me so in your letters. I hope you continue writing, even if it doesn’t end up being your career. For me, writing stories for kids is the best job in the world!
Happy reading!
Sincerely,
Collect clues with Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose
in their next exciting adventure

THE MISSING MUMMY
Dr. Tweed walked over to the three mummy cases. One by one, he raised each lid.
Dink heard some of the kids gasp. The mummies were shaped like human bodies. Each was wrapped in cloth that was blackened with age. A dry, musty smell seeped into the room.
“Each mummy is wrapped in strips of linen,” Dr. Tweed said. “Beneath the cloth—”
Suddenly, a woman in a baggy dress darted toward the mummies. She snatched the smallest one and raced through the door leading to the treasure chamber.
“Stop!” Dr. Tweed shouted as he bolted after her.
