Nathan nodded. “It doesn’t matter now.”

“What do you mean?” said Sharon, frowning.

“Watch,” he replied.

The word had hardly left his mouth when a barrage of arrows went flying into the enemy forces. Verin and the rangers had arrived! As the rangers fired their arrows, the knights charged into the fray. The Morthon soldiers and Darcarion mages were quickly routed. A few fled, but the rangers and soldiers slew most of the enemy force.

Nathan pulled the sword out of the ice, and then gave the ice a hard kick. The icy barrier cracked and broke into pieces, falling into the pond. Nathan turned to Sharon. “Come on.”

While Nathan and Sharon swam to the shore where Verin, Avera, Ava, and Quinton waited for them. As Nathan and Sharon emerged from the water, Avera ran up and started hugging them.

“We are wet,” protested Nathan.

Avera laughed, after all that had happened she was not worried about getting wet.

Ava joined them in a soaking wet group hug.

Finally, Avera broke off the hug. “We had better get, back to the city. Rose might blow the place up when she finds out we came to rescue you without her.”

“Blow the place up?” asked Nathan.

“While you all were out adventuring, Rose has discovered a magical talent. I am afraid she will end up being the strongest mage out of all you,” explained Avera.

Nathan shook his head. Life in Balta was full of surprises. Ava slipped her hand into Nathan’s clasp and gently squeezed. He gently but firmly squeezed her hand back. They were both grinning, watching Sharon give Quinton a hug that nearly knocked the breath out of him. Nathan and Ava started to laugh. Life in Balta was promising.
