Word of the Skalag and Scargile defeats quickly spread to the neighboring villages, plundered by the same ruthless pillagers for decades.  People around the area heralded the victory as great news for communities throughout Resourcelands. Ukkiville's actions put marauders on notice that leaders from the territory were ready to strike down future aggressions.

A sharp ringing from the church bells pierced the air as villagers poured out of their cabins toward their place of worship.  Observing the approaching throng of neighbors, Thoruk's heart still harbored much pain from the losses caused by the bloodshed two days before.  Likewise, the interactions among the townspeople reflected a more subdued attitude than the celebratory musings of visitors from outside Ukkiville's walls.

Fifty Minutes Later

After Thoruk stood before the villagers, lauding them for their contributions and honoring the fallen heroes, he answered questions and mingled with the townspeople for several minutes.
This is hard, but it seems to be helping.  I don't know, though, if Curulka's family is ever going to be the same — or Foxuk's, for that matter.

Mercivil weaved through the crowd and grabbed his hand.  "Sorry, folks, but Thoruk has some important matters he must address."  She gently towed him behind her as she headed beyond the church grounds toward the road out of Ukkiville.

He walked a fast gait for about 75 yards, separating himself from the throng, to where Stormulka stood.  Thoruk stopped abruptly.  "What's wrong?"

Her eyes were still swollen as she faced him and pointed to the drawbridge.  "You need to see something.  Come, let's go to the top of the wall."

As Thoruk and his buddies trotted toward the southern perimeter, he looked around.  "Where's Fluf?"

"I left her at the cabin.  With all that's happening today, she might have been skittish."

After climbing the ladder first, his companions extended their hands and pulled Thoruk up to the platform.  Stormulka waved his arm over the wall.  "You're not going to believe this."

Stunned, Thoruk stood with his mouth agape.  "Where did they all come from?"  He spanned the horizon.  For as far as he could see, hundreds of people emerged from the forests, walking through the fields to converge on Ukkiville.  "Who are they?"

Mercy grinned.  "Storm and I have been meeting visitors throughout the morning.  As soon as the drawbridge was lowered at sunrise, they came in droves — from villages all around — to see you."

Stormulka's bloodshot eyes were the size of walnuts.  "Just as she said, they're bringing gifts and want to offer their alliances to Ukkiville in future battles.  This is spreading like a flash fire across the territory.  They're calling you the new hero of Resourcelands because you were willing to take on the enemies who attacked us and challenged our freedom.  That's their words, not mine.  I mean — I also think you're a hero!"

Instead of happiness, the deaths of his neighbors weighed on Thoruk's heart while he observed the hoards streaming toward his village.
I don't feel like much of a hero.  I've lost too many people, too many friends.
He shook his head.  "This is the last thing I want to deal with right now."

Mercivil peered into his eyes.  "I understand, but you must.  We'll help.  We're going to be very busy the next few days.  I've already asked Wolfuk to set up the Viking funeral that Protuk requested in his will.  Bartuk and Tradulka are watching the crowd to keep everything civil.  They're preparing an area for visitors to camp outside the perimeter during their stay."

Looking at Stormulka, then Thoruk, she smiled.  "I told Mom I was inviting both of you to dinner tonight.  Everything is covered."  She clenched Thoruk by the shoulders.  "Storm and I will bring the guests to the library to meet and talk with you briefly.  We'll be with you and assure the line moves along."

Thoruk closed his eyes and sighed.  "I know, you're right.  They've come a long way, and I want to thank them.  I just wish it wasn't now.  Remind me to smile once in awhile."

During a slight pause, Stormulka grumbled under his breath.  "I can't make it tonight."

Mercivil turned her head.  "Why not?"

His eyes shifted to and fro.  "Uh — I didn't want to say anything yet, but I already have an invitation."

Mercivil stared at him with a wry grin.  "What?  Who?"

He danced in place as if nature called.  "You know Blessivil, right?  I'm joining her for dinner."

With his jaw flopped open, Thoruk glanced at Mercivil.  She stood motionless, eyes and mouth stretched wide.  He scratched his beard.  "Shivers!  How did this happen?"

Stormulka slouched and looked at his boots, speaking softly.  "Yesterday, when I helped patch the hole in the wall, Blessivil brought water to the workers.  While I was drinking, she pulled me aside and asked me to dinner.  Believe me, I was just as shocked as you both are now."

Thoruk rubbed his chin.  "Well, I'll be a wolf's pup.  Never in a million years would I have..."

Mercivil cut him off.  "I hate to interrupt, but we need to get you to the library to meet the visitors patiently awaiting your arrival."

Untapped Feelings Unleashed

While Thoruk sat by Mercivil at a table in the library, he surveyed the line of strangers that extended around the bend and out the entrance.  Each visitor held an offering, toting furs or weapons, others clothing or food.  A handful clutched pouches, maybe gold or different coins.

A thud interrupted his train of thought.
Storm must have closed the front door to shut down for the day.

When the last of the guests made their presentations, Stormulka ushered them out, then returned.  "That's it.  I'd say you met two thirds of the visitors.  The rest we'll handle tomorrow as they continue to arrive.  I'm off to visit Blessivil.  Enjoy yourselves, and I'll see you both in the morning."  His voice faded as he rushed out of the room.

Thoruk and Mercivil tidied the place and headed home as dusk's light faded.  "I'm savoring the thought of your mom's cooking."  After chatting about the unusual activities along the way, he approached his companion's cabin.  "Wow, we're here already?  That was fast."

The aroma of the night's cuisine wafted from inside as he sauntered up the steps and drew a long whiff.  "Yum, smells like your mom has done it again — I'm starved!"

Barely crossing the threshold, Mercivil started sharing her experiences.  "Hi Mom, you're not going to believe the day we had.  First of all, hundreds of people came to visit Ukkiville.  Thoruk's a famous hero."  With a quick breath, she turned toward him and grinned.  "I'm kind of surprised he accepted our dinner invitation — us being such humble servants and all."

Still by the doorway, his cheeks flushed.  "Well, I wouldn't let your mom down.  I'd be happy to share dinner with her if you want to sit on the porch while we eat."  He flashed an even bigger grin.

Right when Miss Gracivil opened her mouth to respond, her talkative daughter cut her off.  "Oh, Mom, brace yourself — Stormy has a girlfriend!"

Her mother's brow rose.  "Naw, you're pulling my leg — not a chance."  She faced Thoruk.  "Good evening, young man.  I'm sorry Mercy is such a chatterbox.  Come in and tell me about your day.  She can finish later after we catch up."

He chuckled.  "Good evening."

Pinching her lips, Mercivil feigned a smile with a half curtsy to Thoruk.

He walked over and gave her mom a hug, then leaned over the iron pot on the wood stove and sniffed.  "I can't wait to taste whatever you're cooking.  It smells wonderful."

"Take a peek."  She lifted the cover, and steam floated to the ceiling.  "We're having chili."

Thoruk smiled.  "Perfect — one of my favorites on a cool night."  He turned toward his charming buddy.  "What do you think?"

She closed her eyes and whirled, flipping her luxurious, golden hair at him.  "I think I'll go wash my hands."

After he shared some of the more interesting stories about the visitors with Miss Gracivil, his irked friend returned from the bathroom.

He grinned.  "Come here, we were just kidding."  Squeezing her tight, he pecked her cheek.  "You know we love you."

Sighing, her muscles relaxed.  "Well, I love Mom too."  She smirked.

He gave her another hug.  "Let's enjoy a nice dinner.  Truce?"

"Okay, if I have to."  She playfully punched him in the arm.

As Thoruk carried the black kettle to the table, Miss Gracivil put a towel on the surface, marking the spot for the highlight of the meal.  Mercivil positioned the warm cornbread near his plate and, after sitting, said grace.

Following the Amens, Miss Gracivil stood and reached for Thoruk's bowl.  "Here, let me get you some chili.  Dear boy, why don't you tell me more about your guests.  I think it's amazing how people traveled so far to show their appreciation.  That's really special."

He glanced at her, then his friend who seemed much more at ease.  "I agree, it's certainly nothing I ever imagined."

After dishing out the thick, spicy chili, the soft-spoken lady sat down and looked at Thoruk.  "Have you considered what you're going to do with all the gifts?"

Mercivil furrowed her brow.  "Mom!"

Thoruk clasped his friend's hand.  "That's okay.  As a matter of fact, I've decided to let the families who lost loved ones select what they prefer among the food, furs, and clothing.  It's a small gesture, but it should help.  We'll distribute the remainder to those with the greatest need."

Gulping a spoonful of the chili, he chomped twice, then swallowed.  "Some visitors donated gold and other coins, which we'll add to our coffers to improve our community structures.  The granaries and mills could use repairs.  We'll also send a good-sized donation to the Texas Freedom Defenders for their huge sacrifice and contribution to the battle."

Whew, that's hot.
He sipped a mouthful of water.  "I'm going to let Wolfuk provide recommendations for distributing the weapons.  After emotions subside a bit, I plan to honor him with the title of Ukkiville's new Master of Arms.  Eventually, when Storm pulls his head out of the clouds, I will officially announce him as my new protector.  We're always defending one another anyway."

Mercivil gawked.  "Stunning, it didn't even occur to me that you were thinking about all of this, given today's events.  You amaze me at times.  I take back some of those evil thoughts I had earlier."  She winked and put her hand on his.

He flaunted his one-sided grin, exaggerating his dimple.

After a further recount of the day, between several more gulps and sips, he looked at Miss Gracivil.  "That was fabulous!"

His favorite chef lifted the pot's lid.  "Would you like more?  There's plenty."

"I'm stuffed.  I've already eaten two bowls and a slice of your cornbread, which is more than enough."  He stood, grabbed the kettle's handle, and carried it to the stove.

Miss Gracivil joined him and placed her arm on his shoulder.  "Go relax by the fire, I'll clean the rest."

After strolling to the living room, he added a log to the hearth while Mercivil sat on the cowhide couch.  She cleared her throat a couple of times.  "I'm rather enjoying the view from here."

He poked the charred logs and orange embers.  "Me too.  I like watching the flames."

She laughed.  "That's not the view I'm talking about."

Wheeling, he squinted.  "What in the world are you talking about?"

"I was thinking, that's a mighty fine butt you have."

He scrunched his face.  "What?  Have you been drinking?"

"Not I.  Why don't you sit over here, next to me.  I'm chilled.  I could use a bit of your body heat right now."

Warmth crept up the back of his neck.
I know what she's thinking, and it has nothing to do with being cold.

He kept shaking his head.  "Blazes, I don't ever recall you acting like this."

He sat on the couch, leaning backward, with a little space between them.  "What are you up to, girl?"  The flames' reflections danced across her pupils.
She is gorgeous.
Heart pounding harder, he drew a deep breath.

She playfully twirled a lock of her hair.  "Are you afraid of me?  Why so far away?"

He inched nearer.

Giggling, she grabbed his shirt and pulled him against her.

Thoruk wasn't sure what he felt, but a swell stirred like never before.
It's getting hot in here.
He loosened his red flannel shirt and peeked around.  He couldn't see Miss Gracivil but heard her humming in the kitchen.

Mercivil twisted toward him and placed her face right in front of his.  He sensed her staring into his mind.
Whoa, what's she doing?
Her hand touched the outside of his thigh, then slid to the inside.  He squirmed with anticipation.  Like a terrified rabbit chased by a wolf, his heart leapt aimlessly as if seeking escape.  Beads of sweat trickled down his side burns.

She ever so slowly licked her lips and closed the distance between them, her breath warm on his skin.  He shut his eyes, tangled his fingers in her hair, and pressed his mouth to hers.  She responded, slipping her tongue between his lips.  His mind went blank as she pulled him snug to her bosom.
