“I think we’re about ready to move on,” Malcolm said to Kim and Trey. “You guys got everything you need?”

Kim reached out to clasp his hand, her other hand taking Trey’s. “I’ve got everything I need right here.”

“Mom, dial it back on the mushy meter,” Trey said with a roll of his eyes. Kim let go of his hand and reached out to cup Trey’s face, placing sloppy kisses on his cheeks. “Oh my little boy, I love you so much. Your mama is so proud of her big boy.”

Trey scrunched up his face and pulled away from her, wiping the back of his hand over his cheek. “Not cool, Mom, not cool at all.”

“You want to be cool, go do it in the car,” she said and he did as he was told.

“He’s right, you know,” Malcolm said. “That wasn’t cool at all, Mom.”

“I probably won’t get many more chances to do that,” she said, sighing as she watched Trey climb into the station wagon. “He’s nearly a grown man. If being uncool means I still get to baby him, I’m fine with that.”

“Fair enough,” Malcolm replied. “Just try not to taint me with it, I still want to be thought of as cool.”

She smiled at him, standing up on her tiptoes to put her arms around his neck. “That couldn’t happen, you’re the coolest guy I know.”

She kissed him, her lips soft and warm, the taste of her now familiar to him but still as intoxicating as it was the first time.

A wolf whistle sounded causing them to pull apart and Malcolm looked around to find Janet smiling broadly at them. He realized then that they had a big audience, everyone finished loading up and waiting on his order to head out.

“Alright everybody, let’s move out,” he ordered and everyone jumped to it, loading into their vehicles.

Malcolm walked around to the back of the wagon to close the hatchback and saw Craig smiling at him with Lorraine and Trey seated in back with him.

“Nice score, man,” Craig said, giving him a thumb’s up. “Kim is a good looking woman.”

“Man, that’s my mom,” Trey said, visibly cringing at the mention of his mother’s attractiveness.

“Dude, your mom’s hot, sorry,” Craig said and turned to Lorraine. “Not as hot as you though.”

Malcolm closed the hatch, leaving Craig to embarrass himself in the back as Malcolm climbed into the driver’s seat, turning on the engine and shifting into gear. He took up the first position in the convoy, glancing in the rear view mirror to watch as the others fell in line behind him.

They were one hell of a group. Normal people who were just trying to protect the ones they loved.

He reached across the seat to take Kim’s hand in his own. She smiled at him, lifting their entwined hands to her lips and kissing them.

And that’s when he realized that it didn’t matter what was out there in that world. As long as they were all together, they would survive it.

About the Author

Growing up in a tiny Canadian town, Courtney McPhail learned from an early age that her imagination was the best, and sometimes only, source of entertainment.  Writing had always been something she had done for her own personal enjoyment. It wasn't until she hit the big 3-0 and went through an existential crisis that she realized writing could be a career.

She currently resides in Toronto, enjoying the big city life while still maintaining her small town girl charm. When she isn't working on her latest novel, she can be found enjoying a hike through the Don Valley Hills near her home. More recently, since discovering Netflix, she can usually be found on her couch, binging on various television shows.
