47
But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.
48
And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of
every
city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.

John 3:22–4:3

22
After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
23
And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.
24
For John was not yet cast into prison.
25
Then there arose a question between
some
of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying.
26
And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all
men
come to him.

27
John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
28
Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.
29
He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
30
 He must increase, but I
must
decrease.

31
He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.
32
And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.
33
He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.
34
For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure
unto him.
35
The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.
36
He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

4:
1
When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,
2
(though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)
3
he left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.

Psalm 104:24-35

24
 O L
ORD
, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.

25

So is
this great and wide sea, wherein
are
things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts.

26
 There go the ships:
there is
that leviathan,
whom
thou hast made to play therein.

27
These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give
them
their meat in due season.

28

That
thou givest them they gather: thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good.

29
Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.

30
Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.

31
 The glory of the L
ORD
shall endure for ever: the L
ORD
shall rejoice in his works.

32
He looketh on the earth, and it trembleth: he toucheth the hills, and they smoke.

33
I will sing unto the L
ORD
as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.

34
My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the L
ORD
.

35
Let the sinners be consumed out of the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless thou the L
ORD
, O my soul. Praise ye the L
ORD
.

Proverbs 14:22-24

22
Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth
shall be
to them that devise good.

23
In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips
tendeth
only to penury.

24
 The crown of the wise
is
their riches:
but
the foolishness of fools
is
folly.

Judges 21:1–Ruth 1:22

1
Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.
2
 And the people came to the house of God, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore;
3
 and said, O L
ORD
God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be today one tribe lacking in Israel?

4
And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.
5
And the children of Israel said, Who
is there
among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the L
ORD
? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the L
ORD
to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
6
And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.
7
How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the L
ORD
that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?

8
 And they said, What one
is there
of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the L
ORD
? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.
9
For the people were numbered, and, behold,
there were
none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there.
10
And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.
11
 And this
is
the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.
12
And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which
is
in the land of Canaan.

13
 And the whole congregation sent
some
to speak to the children of Benjamin that
were
in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them.
14
And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.

15
And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the L
ORD
had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

16
Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?
17
 And they said,
There must be
an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.
18
Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed
be
he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.
19
 Then they said, Behold,
there is
a feast of the L
ORD
in Shiloh yearly
in a place
which
is
on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.

20
 Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;
21
and see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
22
And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time,
that
ye should be guilty.

23
And the children of Benjamin did so, and took
them
wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them.
24
And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.

25
 In those days
there was
no king in Israel: every man did
that which was
right in his own eyes.

1:
1
Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem-judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
2
And the name of the man
was
Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem-judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.
3
And Elimelech Naomi's husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.
4
And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one
was
Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.
5
And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.

6
Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the L
ORD
had visited his people in giving them bread.
7
Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.
8
And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother's house: the L
ORD
deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.
9
 The L
ORD
grant you that ye may find rest, each
of you
in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.

10
And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.

11
And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me?
are
there yet
any more
sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
12
 Turn again, my daughters, go
your way;
for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope,
if
I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;
13
would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the L
ORD
is gone out against me.

14
And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.

15
And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.

16
And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee,
or
to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people
shall be
my people, and thy God my God:
17
where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the L
ORD
do so to me, and more also,
if aught
but death part thee and me.
18
When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her.

19
So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said,
Is
this Naomi?

20
And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.
21
I went out full, and the L
ORD
hath brought me home again empty: why
then
call ye me Naomi, seeing the L
ORD
hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?

22
So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
