 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them [the Jews],
Murmur not among yourselves.

No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
45
Â
It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

Â
Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
47
Â
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

Â
I am that bread of life.

Â
Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
50
Â
This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

Â
I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us
his
flesh to eat?

 Then Jesus said unto them,
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
55
Â
For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56
Â
He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
57
Â
As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
58
Â
This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

 These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

 Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard
this,
said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?

 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them,
Doth this offend you?

What
and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you,
they
are spirit, and
they
are life.

Â
But there are some of you that believe not.
For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

 And he said,
Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
66
 From that
time
many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
67
 Then said Jesus unto the twelve,
Will ye also go away?
68
 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
69
 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
70
 Jesus answered them,
Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?
71
 He spake of Judas Iscariot
the son
of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

 O give thanks unto the L
ORD
, for
he is
good: for his mercy
endureth
for ever.

 Let the redeemed of the L
ORD
say
so,
whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;
3
 And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south.
4
 They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.
5
 Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
6
 Then they cried unto the L
ORD
in their trouble,
and
he delivered them out of their distresses.
7
 And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.
8
 Oh that
men
would praise the L
ORD
for
his goodness, and
for
his wonderful works to the children of men!
9
 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
10
 Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
being
bound in affliction and iron;
11
 Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:
12
 Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and
there was
none to help.
13
 Then they cried unto the L
ORD
in their trouble,
and
he saved them out of their distresses.
14
 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.
15
 Oh that
men
would praise the L
ORD
for
his goodness, and
for
his wonderful works to the children of men!
16
 For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.
17
 Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.
18
 Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.
19
 Then they cry unto the L
ORD
in their trouble,
and
he saveth them out of their distresses.
20
 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered
them
from their destructions.
21
 Oh that
men
would praise the L
ORD
for
his goodness, and
for
his wonderful works to the children of men!
22
 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
23
 They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;
24
 These see the works of the L
ORD
, and his wonders in the deep.
25
 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.
26
 They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.
27
 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end.
28
 Then they cry unto the L
ORD
in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
29
 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
30
 Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.
31
 Oh that
men
would praise the L
ORD
for
his goodness, and
for
his wonderful works to the children of men!
32
 Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
33
 He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground;
34
 A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.
35
 He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.
36
 And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation;
37
 And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.
38
 He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.
39
 Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.
40
 He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness,
where there is
no way.
41
 Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh
him
families like a flock.
42
 The righteous shall see
it,
and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.
43
 Whoso
is
wise, and will observe these
things,
even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the L
ORD
.
1
 A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.
2
 The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.

 The eyes of the L
ORD
are
in every place, beholding the evil and the good.
1
 And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you.
2
 And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons
are
with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day.
3
 Behold, here I
am:
witness against me before the L
ORD
, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received
any
bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.
4
 And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken aught of any man's hand.
5
 And he said unto them, The L
ORD
is
witness against you, and his anointed
is
witness this day, that ye have not found aught in my hand.
And they answered,
He is
witness.
6
 And Samuel said unto the people,
It is
the L
ORD
that advanced Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
7
 Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the L
ORD
of all the righteous acts of the L
ORD
, which he did to you and to your fathers.
8
 When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto the L
ORD
, then the L
ORD
sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place.
9
 And when they forgat the L
ORD
their God, he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.
10
 And they cried unto the L
ORD
, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken the L
ORD
, and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.
11
 And the L
ORD
sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe.
12
 And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the L
ORD
your God
was
your king.
13
 Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen,
and
whom ye have desired! and, behold, the L
ORD
hath set a king over you.
14
 If ye will fear the L
ORD
, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the L
ORD
, then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the L
ORD
your God:
15
 but if ye will not obey the voice of the L
ORD
, but rebel against the commandment of the L
ORD
, then shall the hand of the L
ORD
be against you, as
it was
against your fathers.
16
 Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which the L
ORD
will do before your eyes.
17
Â
Is it
not wheat harvest today? I will call unto the L
ORD
, and he shall send thunder and rain; that ye may perceive and see that your wickedness
is
great, which ye have done in the sight of the L
ORD
, in asking you a king.
18
 So Samuel called unto the L
ORD
; and the L
ORD
sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the L
ORD
and Samuel.
19
 And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the L
ORD
thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins
this
evil, to ask us a king.
20
 And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the L
ORD
, but serve the L
ORD
with all your heart;
21
 and turn ye not aside: for
then should ye go
after vain
things,
which cannot profit nor deliver; for they
are
vain.
22
 For the L
ORD
will not forsake his people for his great name's sake: because it hath pleased the L
ORD
to make you his people.
23
 Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the L
ORD
in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:
24
 only fear the L
ORD
, and serve him in truth with all your heart; for consider how great
things
he hath done for you.
25
 But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king.
13:
1
 Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,
2
 Saul chose him three thousand
men
of Israel;
whereof
two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
3
 And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that
was
in Geba, and the Philistines heard
of it.
And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.
4
 And all Israel heard say
that
Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and
that
Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.
5
 And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which
is
on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Beth-aven.
6
 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.
7
 And
some of
the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he
was
yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
8
 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel
had appointed:
but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
9
 And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.
10
 And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.
11
 And Samuel said, What hast thou done?
And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and
that
thou camest not within the days appointed, and
that
the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;
12
 therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the L
ORD
: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.
13
 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the L
ORD
thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the L
ORD
have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
14
 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the L
ORD
hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the L
ORD
hath commanded him
to be
captain over his people, because thou hast not kept
that
which the L
ORD
commanded thee.
15
 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people
that were
present with him, about six hundred men.
16
 And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people
that were
present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.
17
 And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way
that leadeth to
Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:
18
 and another company turned the way
to
Beth-horon: and another company turned
to
the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
19
 Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make
them
swords or spears:
20
 but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his ax, and his mattock.
21
 Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.
22
 So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that
were
with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.
23
 And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.
