4
But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
5
Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
6
Therefore let us not sleep, as
do
others; but let us watch and be sober.
7
For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
8
But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
9
For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
10
who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
11
Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
12
 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;
13
and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake.
And
be at peace among yourselves.
14
Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all
men.
15
See that none render evil for evil unto any
man;
but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all
men.
16
 Rejoice evermore.
17
 Pray without ceasing.
18
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
19
 Quench not the Spirit.
20
 Despise not prophesyings.
21
Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
22
Abstain from all appearance of evil.
23
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and
I pray God
your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24
 Faithful
is
he that calleth you, who also will do
it.
25
 Brethren, pray for us.
26
Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.
27
I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.
28
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ
be
with you. Amen.
A Psalm of Asaph.
1
God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods.
2
How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah.
3
Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.
4
Deliver the poor and needy: rid
them
out of the hand of the wicked.
5
They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.
6
 I have said, Ye
are
gods; and all of you
are
children of the most High.
7
But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.
8
Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.
9
Debate thy cause with thy neighbour
himself;
and discover not a secret to another:
10
 Lest he that heareth
it
put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away.
1
 Thus saith the L
ORD
; Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak there this word,
2
and say, Hear the word of the L
ORD
, O king of Judah, that sittest upon the throne of David, thou, and thy servants, and thy people that enter in by these gates:
3
 Thus saith the L
ORD
; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.
4
For if ye do this thing indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, he, and his servants, and his people.
5
But if ye will not hear these words, I swear by myself, saith the L
ORD
, that this house shall become a desolation.
6
 For thus saith the L
ORD
unto the king's house of Judah; Thou
art
Gilead unto me,
and
the head of Lebanon:
yet
surely I will make thee a wilderness,
and
cities
which
are not inhabited.
7
And I will prepare destroyers against thee, every one with his weapons: and they shall cut down thy choice cedars, and cast
them
into the fire.
8
And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the L
ORD
done thus unto this great city?
9
Then they shall answer, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the L
ORD
their God, and worshipped other gods, and served them.
10
Weep ye not for the dead, neither bemoan him:
but
weep sore for him that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor see his native country.
11
 For thus saith the L
ORD
touching Shallum the son of Josiah king of Judah, which reigned instead of Josiah his father, which went forth out of this place; He shall not return thither any more:
12
but he shall die in the place whither they have led him captive, and shall see this land no more.
13
 Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong;
that
useth his neighbour's service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;
14
that saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and
it is
cieled with cedar, and painted with vermilion.
15
Shalt thou reign, because thou closest
thyself
in cedar? did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice,
and
then
it was
well with him?
16
He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then
it was
well
with him: was
not this to know me? saith the L
ORD
.
17
But thine eyes and thine heart
are
not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do
it.
18
 Therefore thus saith the L
ORD
concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah; They shall not lament for him,
saying,
Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! they shall not lament for him,
saying,
Ah lord! or, Ah his glory!
19
He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.
20
Go up to Lebanon, and cry; and lift up thy voice in Bashan, and cry from the passages: for all thy lovers are destroyed.
21
 I spake unto thee in thy prosperity;
but
thou saidst, I will not hear. This
hath been
thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice.
22
The wind shall eat up all thy pastors, and thy lovers shall go into captivity: surely then shalt thou be ashamed and confounded for all thy wickedness.
23
O inhabitant of Lebanon, that makest thy nest in the cedars, how gracious shalt thou be when pangs come upon thee, the pain as of a woman in travail!
24
Â
As
I live, saith the L
ORD
, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were the signet upon my right hand, yet would I pluck thee thence;
25
and I will give thee into the hand of them that seek thy life, and into the hand
of them
whose face thou fearest, even into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of the Chaldeans.
26
And I will cast thee out, and thy mother that bare thee, into another country, where ye were not born; and there shall ye die.
27
But to the land whereunto they desire to return, thither shall they not return.
28
Â
Is
this man Coniah a despised broken idol?
is he
a vessel wherein
is
no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not?
29
O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the L
ORD
.
30
 Thus saith the L
ORD
, Write ye this man childless, a man
that
shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.
23:
1
Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the L
ORD
.
2
 Therefore thus saith the L
ORD
God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the L
ORD
.
3
And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase.
4
And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith the L
ORD
.
5
Behold, the days come, saith the L
ORD
, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
6
In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this
is
his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
7
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the L
ORD
, that they shall no more say, The L
ORD
liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;
8
 but, The L
ORD
liveth, which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land.
9
Mine heart within me is broken because of the prophets; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine hath overcome, because of the L
ORD
, and because of the words of his holiness.
10
For the land is full of adulterers; for because of swearing the land mourneth; the pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up, and their course is evil, and their force
is
not right.
11
For both prophet and priest are profane; yea, in my house have I found their wickedness, saith the L
ORD
.
12
Wherefore their way shall be unto them as slippery
ways
in the darkness: they shall be driven on, and fall therein: for I will bring evil upon them,
even
the year of their visitation, saith the L
ORD
.
13
And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria; they prophesied in Baal, and caused my people Israel to err.
14
I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.
15
 Therefore thus saith the L
ORD
of hosts concerning the prophets; Behold, I will feed them with wormwood, and make them drink the water of gall: for from the prophets of Jerusalem is profaneness gone forth into all the land.
16
 Thus saith the L
ORD
of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart,
and
not out of the mouth of the L
ORD
.
17
They say still unto them that despise me, The L
ORD
hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you.
18
For who hath stood in the counsel of the L
ORD
, and hath perceived and heard his word? who hath marked his word, and heard
it?
19
Behold, a whirlwind of the L
ORD
is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked.
20
 The anger of the L
ORD
shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly.
