‘If that’s to be, feller,’ Edge growled, ‘at least she’ll be close to my age. And I doubt she’ll make a fool out of me in front of a saloonful of – ‘

‘Max!’ Meeker snarled.

Lacy cursed and dropped his hand away from the ivory butt of his holstered sixgun. Edge went on: ‘First I got to find a lost Colt revolver. Then get back a horse that doesn’t belong to me that I lent to a feller. And I’ll make sure the escaped prisoner comes back to town along with the horse, sheriff.’

Meeker took out his pipe and growled: ‘I’ll still want Ivers locked in my jail, even if what he and his no good buddy did is small potatoes compared to Colman and his crimes.’ He shook his head ruefully as he peered over the lip of the cliff, clamped the cold pipe between his teeth and rasped: ‘Three murders and now I ain’t so sure that Jordan was killed in an accident, damnit!’

Edge said: ‘I guess you could have figured it would finish this way, feller.’

‘You got any idea what the hell this crazy talking Yankee is trying to say, Vic?’ Lacy asked sourly.

Edge moved slowly into the timber as he replied evenly: ‘The kid was turning into a serial killer – and we got us a cliff hanger ending.’
