CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Now William had sorted out somewhere for himself and Wyn to be totally alone he was impatient to make use of it but circumstances seemed to be against him. Mrs Brompton had come back and brought Miss Catherine with her to get ready for the wedding. There was also Mrs Brompton’s sister Constance Reade who had surprised them all by bringing her new husband to be with her. Mrs Brompton had only found out about him when she arrived in Surrey and it had given her quite a shock. It had also caused a bit of consternation when they first arrived as there wasn’t a room ready for him, but Mrs Brompton had him put in Mr Charles’s old room so it was soon sorted out.
Wyn and Betty had been run off their feet looking after all of them. Constance was very demanding and was getting Wyn to do absolutely everything for her.
‘I’m not a ladies maid,’ she complained to Betty, ‘I don’t know how to do her hair or iron her clothes. She keeps slapping me when I get it wrong. You can do it better than me.’
‘Go and tell Mrs Brompton,’ Betty told her.
‘I can’t do that,’ Wyn replied. ‘Mrs Brompton has got enough on her plate without me moaning. I’ll just have to do the best I can and Constance Reade will just have to put up with it.’
‘You can practice on me for the wedding if you like,’ Betty told her.
‘Oh thank you,’ Wyn replied, ’it’ll really help me. Who are you getting ready?’
‘I’m doing Mrs Brompton and Miss Catherine as Mrs Davis won’t have time as she has to prepare the food,’ Betty replied.
‘You’ll be busy then,’ Wyn said.
Betty just smiled saying ‘Mrs Brompton is easy and she doesn’t complain but Miss Catherine is difficult because she doesn’t care what her hair looks like. She doesn’t even wash it anymore unless she’s told to. The life has totally gone out of her. It’s like her life is over and she is just coasting along until it comes to an end. It’s so sad. I’m going to try and make her have some interest in her wedding.’
‘Poor girl,’ Wyn said, ‘but she’s so young, she has to get over what happened to Frank Cooper. We’re her age, it’s up to us to try and get her to enjoy life again before her wedding.’
‘Come with me now then,’ Betty told her. ‘I’ve got to go and see Miss Catherine now to talk about what her hair should look like. Let’s try and get her to show some interest.’
Betty led the way upstairs to Miss Catherine’s bedroom. She knocked on the door and they walked in to find Catherine lying on the bed just staring at the ceiling. She hadn’t even bothered to get herself dressed and showed no interest when Betty and Wyn tried to talk to her. After a couple of minutes of trying to get her to acknowledge their presence in the room, Betty lost patience and suddenly shouted, ‘Catherine look at me.’ Miss Catherine jumped and finally turned her head and looked at Betty. ‘We’ve come to talk about how you want your hair for the wedding,’ Betty told her.
‘I’m not getting married,’ Catherine replied looking puzzled.
‘Yes you are,’ Betty replied.
‘Since when and who to?’ asked Catherine.
Betty looked at Wyn and shrugged. ‘Your mother told you,’ Betty said, ‘you are getting married next week to Harry Huxley-Chadwick.’
Catherine looked shocked but not displeased. ‘Oh yes,’ she said, ‘I remember now. I don’t mind Harry, he’s alright. Now Frank’s dead I don’t care who I marry.’
Now they finally seemed to have got Catherine acknowledging that she was actually getting married, Wyn left Betty to sort out how she was going to have her hair and went back down to the kitchen to carry on helping Mrs Davis prepare the dinner.
‘How’s Miss Catherine?’ Mrs Davis asked her.
‘She’s getting better,’ Wyn replied. ‘Me and Betty are trying to get her used to her getting married and she seems to at least know now that she’s marrying Harry.’
‘Oh that’s good,’ said Mrs Davis. ‘I feel so sorry for that poor girl.’
‘She’ll get over everything eventually,’ Wyn told her, ‘it’s just going to take time but being married to Harry might help her.’
Betty walked into the kitchen and asked, ‘what’s for dinner? I’m starving, all this heart break makes me hungry.’
‘Wait and see,’ replied Mrs Davis slapping her hand as she pinched a carrot out of the pot. ‘How’s Miss Catherine doing?’ Wyn asked Betty.
‘She’s not too bad,’ Betty told her. ‘She’s showing a bit of interest now in how her hair is going to look and, she asked to see her mother. Mrs Brompton is in with her now.’ Just as she was saying this, Mrs Brompton walked into the kitchen.
‘Could you ask Ned to bring the car round to the front door at ten o’clock in the morning please,’ she asked Mrs Davis. ‘Catherine wants to go to the dressmaker to see about her wedding dress and also wants to visit Harry.’ She looked at Wyn and Betty and said, ‘I don’t know what you two girls have said to her but she’s a different person.’
‘We didn’t really say anything,’ Wyn told her, ‘she just seemed to suddenly accept that she was marrying Harry.’
‘Well it doesn’t matter how,’ said Mrs Brompton, ‘it’s just good she’s showing an interest.’
The next day was Wyn’s seventeenth birthday but she hadn’t told anyone so was surprised when she walked into the kitchen in the morning to start working, to find a cake with a candle in it sitting on the kitchen table. William, Betty, Ned and Mrs Davis were waiting for her and they all smiled when she gasped in surprise.
‘How did you know?’ Wyn asked.
‘You told me when your birthday was a while ago,’ Betty told her.
‘I don’t remember doing that,’ Wyn replied.
‘It was on one of our nights off when we had been out, I told you and you told me.’
Wyn thought for a moment, ‘oh yes,’ she replied, ‘I remember now. I’ve written yours down so I don’t forget.’
‘That’s what I did,’ Betty told her, ‘so that’s how all of us know.’
‘Blow your candle out and make a wish,’ William told her.
Wyn bent over the cake and blew the candle out thinking at the same time, I wish William and me could be together forever.
‘Did you make your wish?’ Betty asked her.
‘Oh yes,’ replied Wyn ‘but I can’t tell you because then it wouldn’t come true.’
They all gave her a small gift. Betty’s was a lovely scarf, Ned’s was a handkerchief, Mrs Davis gave her a set of scented soap and William just said I’ll give you a surprise later. He gave her a long look and walked out of the kitchen.
‘Ooh!’ exclaimed Betty, ‘I wonder what surprise he’s got for you.’ Wyn blushed but didn’t reply.
‘Come on now,’ Mrs Davis told them, ‘it’s time you all started working. Ned, you’re supposed to be bringing the car round to the front door in about five minutes so I suggest you get going.’
‘Oh no, I’m going to be late,’ Ned exclaimed as he rushed out of the door.
Wyn went upstairs to start cleaning the bedrooms. There were more of them occupied now so it took more of her time to actually clean them all. She started in Mrs Brompton’s room because she knew it wouldn’t take long. Mrs Brompton always kept her room tidy. She knocked on the door and went in and was surprised to see Mrs Brompton still in there.
‘Oh!’ she exclaimed, ‘I’m sorry, I thought you had already left the room.’
‘It’s alright,’ said Mrs Brompton smiling at her. ‘I’m just going, I was just trying to find this necklace for Catherine as her something old.’ She opened her hand to show Wyn a very simple diamond necklace.
Oh that’s lovely,’ Wyn exclaimed.
‘It’s very old,’ Mrs Brompton told her, ‘it belonged to my great great grandmother and has always been handed down to the eldest daughter on her wedding day, I hope Catherine will wear it with pride.’
Later that day when they had done everything they had to do and Mrs Brompton, Catherine and the guests were at a dinner at the house of Catherine’s husband to be, William took Wyn down to the room he had prepared in the basement. She walked in and looked around.
‘This looks a bit different than the last time I saw it,’ she said.
‘I would hope so,’ replied William. ‘I’ve worked hard on it. What do you think?’
‘It’s lovely,’ she told him.
William lifted her face up to meet his and kissed her gently. She put her arms around him and cuddled close. William kissed her again but this time she opened her mouth to let his tongue explore. The kiss got more and more passionate and William pulled her onto the bed. His hands started roaming over her body and she didn’t try to stop him. He moaned and undid her blouse. He could feel her erect nipple underneath her chemise and pinched it between his fingers making her moan in pleasure. His hands then moved down to remove her skirt and undergarments until she was lying naked next to him. He looked down at her naked body and told her she was beautiful. Wyn just lay there totally exposed and revelled in his gaze. It made her feel very wanton but she wasn’t at all embarrassed as this was the man she loved. William stood up and quickly stripped all his clothes off. She looked at his manly body with its large, erect member and a thrill went through her. William lay back down on the bed and ran his hands all over her body. ‘Touch me,’ he asked her and she moved her hands over his body feeling a shiver go through him as she did. ‘Oh Wyn,’ he whispered as she touched him, ‘I love and want you so much.’ She reached up and pulled his face down to hers. She kissed him passionately and he sank back down on to the bed running his hands over her breasts and down towards her sex. His fingers touched her and her back arched as the pleasure shot through her body. Wyn was moaning as he removed his hand and started kissing her body starting with her nipples and then down until he reached the nub of her sex. The feeling in her body started building as his tongue moved in circles making her cry out with pure pleasure. She kissed his body, loving the salty taste of him, biting his nipples, then all the way down until she reached his erect manhood. She hesitated for a moment then took it into her mouth making him moan. She started moving her mouth up and down just like she did with her hand. ‘Suck at the same time,’ he groaned. She sucked hard and he gasped. ‘Stop, stop, I’ll come and I don’t want it to happen like that. Wyn stopped and he pushed her down onto the bed. He started caressing her body again until she was moaning and writhing beside him. He got on top of her and entered her carefully not wanting to hurt her. She gasped as she felt him inside her, it surprised her that it hurt a bit, but once he was inside her properly and started moving it just felt wonderful. The feeling started building in her body again until she felt like she had exploded into a million pieces. She felt William suddenly tense and then he groaned out loud as he emptied his seed into her.
Afterwards they lay down together both completely content until Wyn suddenly jumped up, pulled on her clothes and told William that she would be back soon. She ran up the stairs and into the water closet in the scullery, grabbing a sponge on the way. She soaked the sponge with water and pushed up inside her as far as she could and washed everything out just like Betty had told her. When she had finished she went back down to the basement where William was still lying on the bed totally naked. ‘Where did you go?’ he asked her.
‘I suddenly remembered what I had to do to avoid having a baby,’ Wyn replied, ‘Betty told me, but it has to be right afterwards or it might not work, but don’t ask me what it is,’ she added. ‘Come and lie down again,’ William said but just then they heard Mrs Davis calling Wyn.
‘It’s late, I thought she was already in bed,’ Wyn said ‘what on earth can she want at this time. I better go and see, you should probably get dressed too,’ she told William. William groaned but got up and started pulling his clothes on.
‘You go first,’ he told her.
Wyn gave him a quick kiss and went up the stairs. There was no-one near the top of the stairs and she managed to get into the kitchen without anyone seeing where she had come from. Mrs Davis was standing in the centre of the kitchen looking distressed.
‘What’s wrong?’ Wyn asked her.
‘I’ve just seen Betty sneaking out of Ned’s room,’ Mrs Davis replied, ‘I don’t know what to do.’
Wyn had to hide her smile. ‘It’s alright Mrs Davis,’ Wyn said, ‘I’m sure there will be an innocent explanation, Betty’s not silly.’
‘But they are so young,’ Mrs Davis replied, ‘they might be tempted to be do things they shouldn’t’
‘I’m sure nothing happened,’ Wyn told her, ‘they are both sensible people. Calm down and stop worrying, everything will be fine. Go to bed now, that’s where I’m going.’ Wyn said good night and walked out of the kitchen thinking, oh dear I’d better warn Betty. When she got upstairs she knocked on Betty’s door and walked in. Betty was sitting in front of the mirror thoughtfully brushing her hair. Wyn looked at her and laughingly said, ‘you look like the cat that got the cream.’
‘You don’t look much different,’ Betty replied. What have you been doing?’
‘Same as you I expect,’ replied Wyn.
Betty looked at her with a smile and said, ‘really, you’ve done it and on your birthday too, where?’
‘William cleaned up the room in the basement and put a new bed in there,’ Wyn told her. ‘Not the room where we found Mary,’ Betty exclaimed.
