She hoped some of Yakima’s good luck would rub off on her. A boyfriend for New Year’s would be a new experience. Last year she’d been dumped by her boyfriend of five years on December twenty-eighth and she hadn’t been any cheerier than Dare was this year during the holidays.
His new dog, Blue, had made a tremendous difference in Dare’s outlook. Training him was keeping him out of the bars. She didn’t have a new man, or a new pet, but she might have her own rental house if she could find a decent roommate to help her afford the rent on Yakima’s bungalow.
When she reached the top of the steps, the door opened. Instead of one of her cousins, she saw the most gorgeous guy she’d ever seen.
“Who are you?” she asked.
“Let me help you with that,” he said in with a country twang.
She scrutinized him as he took the muffins and fruit from her arms. Now she recognized that wavy blond hair reaching down to his collared shirt, and those piercing blue eyes. Even the barely-there goatee around that batwing-shaped upper lip was becoming iconic. This was Roger Miller Dealy, the youngest Dealy Band member. Searching his face, she noticed his eyes were red, like he’d had a rough night.
“Haldana!” Bax appeared in the doorway, wrapping his arms around her and blocking her view of the other man. By the time she disentangled herself from Bax, Gerry Dealy had disappeared into the kitchen.
“Is he okay?” Haldana asked.
“Don’t worry about him,” Bax said. “He’ll be out of my hair by the end of the day. I’m sending him back to Nashville on the next flight I can find.”
She turned to shut the door and saw a surprising sight. Thick snow poured from the sky. “Were we expecting that?”
Bax put his hands on her shoulders and sighed. “We didn’t get a white Christmas, but it doesn’t look like we’re being spared today.”
“I guess your houseguest isn’t getting on the next flight,” Haldana said, her thoughts sparking with possibilities. The holidays had just become much more interesting.

About the Author
Heather Hiestand was born in Illinois, but her family migrated west before she started school. Since then she has claimed Washington State as home, except for a few years in California. She wrote her first story at age seven and went on to major in creative writing at the University of Washington. Her first published fiction was a mystery short story. Heather’s first published romance short story was set in the Victorian period, and she continues to return to historical fiction as well as other subgenres. The author of many novels, novellas, and short stories, she has achieved best-seller status at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. With her husband and son, she makes her home in a small town and supposedly works out of her tiny office, though she mostly writes in her easy chair in the living room.
