“Oh, good! I’ve been waiting to meet him,” Noah said.
Maisie ignored him. Steve was everything. And he was here, but different. Like…he’d gone full freak. Okay. She was cool as long as he was here. As long as she wasn’t alone. They’d work the rest out later. Besides, Noah deserved full freak.
“There’s a nightmare here,” she told Noah with an upward nod in Steve’s direction. Because that was what Steve was.
As she watched, Steve’s form took on muscle definition and menace. And yet she didn’t feel afraid. She felt light. Safe. Free.
Noah chuckled, didn’t even deign to turn and look at his new adversary. “Oh, honey. Half-breeds like me don’t have nightmares. Certainly not one you call
Steve-o
.”
The nightmare behind him stretched a jack-o’-lantern grin, wide and sharp.
Maisie nodded her approval.
Very effective, lover boy. Bravo.
The nightmare spoke in that unnerving, controlled way Steve had always had. “You do now.”
