Rafe barely even noticed the pirates, so intent was he upon his bride; this was the first sight he’d had of her since leaving her naked and asleep in his fantasy lair early that morning.
She was so beautiful. His heart swelled with love and threatened to overflow. Their eyes met and held. He smiled at her, his rogue’s smile. His pirate’s smile. Damned if he hadn’t won the prize of prizes.
She reached his side and stopped. Looking up at him, she said in a soft voice only the two of them could hear, “I love you, Rafe Malone. I love you with every bit of my heart. But if you ever dare to lock me up again, I’ll take Papa Snake’s cutlass to you. Do you understand?”
“Yes, ma’am,” he said as his body responded to the saucy sparkle in her eyes.
“Then marry me, Malone. And be quick about it. I made a few changes in your pasha’s abode. I think you’ll find them, ah, captivating.”
Rafe winked at her, then nodded to the preacher, saying, “Give us the short version, will you, Reverend?”
When the time came to make her vows, Maggie had to raise her voice to be heard over the sniffles and coughs of her overly emotional papas. Then the preacher turned to Rafe.
“I, Rafe Malone, take you, Mary Margaret St. John, to be my lawfully wedded wife. I promise to love you, honor you, and cherish you all the days of my life.” He lifted her hands to his mouth and pressed a kiss, his pledge, against her fingers.
“You have my word on it.”
