“Well, you can probably guess what comes next. That was on Thursday. On Sunday morning, December 7, I was listening to the radio when suddenly they interrupted with a special news bulletin. The Japanese had struck Pearl Harbor before dawn, the men were caught in their barracks, 400 and something, and we were at war.

“As is the case of those first bulletins, they are rather short and incomplete, and they tell you to keep listening for further reports that will come later. In this bulletin, they didn’t have an account of all the damage done, but they said that as far as they knew at the moment, the greatest loss of life had occurred when one of the barracks suffered a direct hit. They told how the men were caught there before they were even fully awake, and he gave the number as 400 and something, which was the number I had dreamed. The description followed everything exactly as I had seen it. The only thing I had not known was the identity of the enemy.”

Reports like these suggest that ESP is remarkably stable and consistent in terms of form and content. Whether they come from Portland, Maine or Portland, Oregon, some of the experiences are basically identical.” Consider this case sent to the Rhine Research Center:

“Something Has Happened to My Mother!” (I)

“One Sunday afternoon, several members of our family were eating dinner at my grandmother’s house. Suddenly, and for no apparent reason in the midst of pleasant family dinner chatter, my mother stood up and screamed ‘My mother! My mother! Something has happened to my mother!’ We were all shocked… About fifteen minutes after her experience, the phone rang, and she received the information from her father that her mother had indeed died fifteen minutes previously. My mother was not aware that her mother was ill, or even that she was in a hospital (where she expired).”

And now the almost identical experience of another woman who wrote to the Rhine Center:

On Thanksgiving Day, a woman was a guest for dinner and was surrounded by happy people. Nevertheless, around 11:30 in the morning, when conversation consisted of nothing more serious than chitchat about the Thanksgiving dinner, she suddenly knew without a doubt that her mother, who lived far away in California, was in great distress. She tried not to disturb the party of fourteen people and managed to finish dinner. But her thoughts were perfectly clear. She knew her mother had passed away. She excused herself and went home. When she got there, a message awaited her. Her mother had died about 9:30 in the morning, making the time of the mother’s death and the daughter’s reaction about the same. The mother was aged, but she had not been ill, and the daughter had no reason to expect her death.

Both women, in the middle of their pleasant dinners, had sudden intuitions that something terrible had happened to their mothers at that very moment. Both women were absolutely convinced that the information they received from their sixth sense was correct. And shortly afterwards, both women received messages confirming their ESP. Parapsychologists have found spontaneous ESP experiences basically identical to those above in ESP case collections stretching back to the 1880s…
