âI'll fetch some water to clean up that face of yours, Clem,' Tilly said, resorting to practicalities.
As she went to brush past him, Clem caught her in his arms, drawing her close. Even in the half light, Tilly could recognise the tenderness in his eyes as he looked deeply into hers. âIt'll do later, Tilly.'
âBut it must hurt . . .'
Clem stopped her lips with a kiss. âI can't leave you, girl. Not ever. I've always loved you, Tilly, and nothing can change that.'
âOh, Clem. I love you too and I'm so sorry for everything.' Sliding her arms around his neck, Tilly closed her eyes, allowing her senses to soar heavenwards in Clem's embrace. When at last they drew apart just a little, and then only to take a breath, Tilly saw herself mirrored in his eyes and she knew that she had come home at last. âI'll never, never lie to you again. Just promise you won't ever leave me.'
Clem managed a smile in spite of his cut lip. âI'll promise you anything, but on one condition.'
Tilly knew the question even before he asked it. âYes.'
âHold on, let a bloke do the asking. Will you marry me, Tilly?'
âHow many times do I have to say yes?'
âOnce is all I ask. Once and for all time. I'll love you forever, Tilly True.'
