William began to hum softly to the baby in his arms. Aishlinn felt a sense of recognition to the tune but could not quite place it. She looked about at these braw men with sheer amazement. Each of them, warriors who would fight to the death to defend their families and homeland, were reduced to near quivering fools at the sight of a bairn.

There was more love in this one room, in this one moment than Aishlinn had ever experienced or witnessed in her entire life. She knew then that she never wanted to leave this place or these people. She was home.

not long after that the evening meal ended and the tables were cleared and moved to make way for the musicians. There was much excitement and anticipation in the air as people of all ages stood chattering away with one another. Aishlinn spied Bree across the room as she stood with Tall Thomas. Bree smiled sweetly as she looked up into the young man’s eyes. Aishlinn could see how the two felt for one another.

Aishlinn felt momentarily jealous of the two of them. What she wouldn’t give to have someone look at her the way Tall Thomas looked at Bree. Pushing the thought aside she waited alone near the entrance of the gathering room.

It did not take long for the musicians to begin playing a quite lively tune. Soon, the floor was filled with people dancing happily about. Wee William had returned the baby safely to her mother’s arms and now stood before Aishlinn. He bowed, winked devilishly at her and in one swift movement spun her onto the dance floor.

For a man as large as Wee William, he certainly possessed a great amount of grace! He swept Aishlinn away into the sea of other dancers and she was quite surprised at how well she was doing. She paid close attention to the others in order to copy their steps. A few faulting moments here and there, but it did not matter. Everyone was having a grand time!

As soon as one song ended, another began and Aishlinn found she was dancing with one man or lad after another. Such a wonderful time she was having as she laughed and twirled and scooped along with each of the partners she had. Her cheeks were beginning to ache from smiling so much and not one of the men she danced with complained when she stepped upon his feet.

Black Richard came to her and asked her for the next dance and she graciously accepted. She was out of breath and would have liked instead to take a rest, but she did not want to say no, for she was having so much fun. The next song was a bit slower than the earlier ones and she was glad for the chance to catch her breath.

As she tried to concentrate on the steps, Black Richard smiled said, “Ya dance very well, lass.”

Aishlinn thanked him and tried not to step on his feet. He did dance rather well and she was glad he did not make fun of her when she took a misstep and stepped on his boot. “I’m sorry!” she said, “’tis my first time dancing.”

“I think a lass as lovely as ye will have many opportunities to dance again,” he said. There was something in the way that he looked at her that made her blush.

“Thank you, Black Richard,” she said as she looked to concentrate on where to put her feet. “That is very kind of you to say.”

The song soon ended and as she attempted to step away, he held on to her hand. “I’d like another, if that is all right with ye, Aishlinn.” His smile held hope.

Before she could answer Duncan appeared beside them. “The lass has promised me the next dance, haven’t ye Aishlinn?” he said as he stared down at Black Richard. Aishlinn could see Duncan’s jaw clenching and knew he often did that when he was upset or angry about something. She had no idea why he would be upset this night, for they were all having such a delightful time.

Wanting very much to dance with him, she looked at Black Richard. “Thank you Richard! But I did promise Duncan a dance.” Duncan swept her away, leaving Black Richard standing alone.

“Are ye having a good time this night?” Duncan asked her once they were on the dance floor and away from Black Richard.

“Oh yes! I am! Thank you.” She smiled at him, truly enjoying the way his hand felt upon her waist. “Are you?” she asked.

“I am now,” he said, as he winked at her and twirled her about the room.

She felt herself go warm inside and had to remind herself to breathe. Proud and honored she was to be dancing with Duncan, she hoped the dance would last a very long time; perhaps a year or two would be sufficient.

He looked so handsome this night in his white tunic that showed off his broad chest and muscular arms. He wore his dark blue and green plaids that draped nicely over his tightly muscled legs. ’Twas all she could do to keep her heart from pounding its way from her chest. The thoughts she was having she was certain were not at all proper.

“Aishlinn,” Duncan said, his voice low and smooth. “Ye do look beautiful this night.”

Another wave of crimson came to her cheeks. That puzzling smile had returned to his face. Oh how she wished he had more than brotherly feelings towards her!

“Ya blush easily, lass. Why is that?” Duncan asked, sounding quite serious. Aishlinn blushed again and thought that perhaps she should just permanently dye her skin red then no one would be the wiser. She could not find the words to answer him so she remained quiet.

“Is it because ye dunna believe me?” he asked.

She was beginning to grow quite flustered for she truly did not want to blatantly accuse him of lying. “Exaggerating perhaps?” she asked hoping her answer did not insult him. His eyes twinkled when he smiled.

“Nay. I told ye long ago that Highlanders dunna lie, dinna I?”

“Aye, you did. But you also said you might stretch the truth on occasions when it was necessary,” she pointed out to him.

His brow creased. “I did, dinna I?”

“You did, Laird McEwan.” She was trying not to smile at him for he had a scowl upon his face and she was not certain if he was perturbed with her or not. “So you can see how I might come to that conclusion. That you may not be actually lying, just merely stretching the truth.” She took a deep breath, hoping he would not become angry with her for saying what she truly thought.

“I see. Well, there are other things that a Highlander never does.”

Aishlinn swallowed hard and tried to sound far less flustered than she actually was. “What is that?”

“We never lie about a woman’s true beauty.”

Aishlinn’s heart skipped a few beats as chill bumps began to cover her skin. What she would not give for Duncan to think of her as more than a younger sister.

Disappointingly, the song ended far too soon. Black Richard appeared by her side again, asking for yet another dance. Aishlinn truly did not want to insult him, but she had been dancing for quite some time and if she could not dance again with Duncan, she would very much like a cup of ale.

As she stood between Black Richard and Duncan another much younger lad came to her and asked her to dance. Feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment, she politely declined his invitation but was soon approached by another.

She looked to Duncan for help but he was busy clenching his teeth and chest-to-chest with Black Richard. They scowled at each other as if they were ready to come to blows. She had no idea what had happened to anger either of them. She did not want the night ruined by two daft men so she quickly stepped in between them.

“Duncan, could you please take me to a table so that I might sit down to cool for a moment?” Her voice was pleading.

“Aye!” he nearly shouted as he grabbed her by the arm and took her from the dance floor. He walked quickly, bypassing the tables and chairs, pulling Aishlinn along by her hand. As they raced past a group of young men, one shouted out a request for a dance with her. Duncan turned and glowered at the group of lads. He said nothing for the look he gave them was enough to cause them to back down and away.

Aishlinn was confused by Duncan’s sudden change in mood. She had to practically run to keep up with him as he pulled her into the dark kitchens. They were empty as everyone was in the gathering room enjoying the dance.

They stopped near a table and as Duncan was about to say something, a lad walked through the door. “Aishlinn!” he shouted with a hopeful smile. “Will ye have a dance with me?”

Duncan growled. The lad’s smile faded instantly and he fled the room. “Duncan!” Aishlinn said, “What in heaven’s name is the matter with you?”

He let out a heavy sigh before he took her hand again and pulled her outside. He needed to be alone with her and was growing quite weary with the interruptions. He pulled her around the castle and up several flights of stairs until they stood near one of the guard towers.

By the time they stopped, Aishlinn was completely out of breath. She was glad for the cool night air but was genuinely confused by Duncan’s behavior and why he had brought her to the towers. Perhaps she had done or said something wrong and he was ready to give her a brotherly chastisement.

Not knowing what to say at the moment and feeling very uneasy, Aishlinn smiled at him. “Thank you Duncan, for a very grand night.” She took in a deep breath of air and prayed for her stomach to settle and her heart to quit pounding. A cup of ale would have been good at this moment for her mouth had suddenly gone quite dry.

Standing in silence, Duncan watched her closely. God’s teeth she was beautiful beyond all measure. He desperately wanted to tell her how he felt about her and for a chance to kiss those sweet full lips of hers.

“Thank you as well, for having all the men dance with me. ’Twas very kind of you to do that.”

His brow furrowed with irritation. “Aishlinn, I did no’ do that.”

She cast him a disbelieving look. “Of course you did! Why else would they have all danced with me?” She rolled her eyes at him, not believing him for a moment. He needn’t be so polite she thought.

“Did ye ever stop to think it’s because of how beautiful ye look this night?” he asked, exasperated with her naiveté.

She had assumed they all danced with her at Duncan’s request. “Nay! I thought they only danced with me because you asked them too.”

To think for even a moment that it had been for any other reason was something that neither her heart nor her mind could grasp. “I thought you did it to be brotherly to me.”

Duncan let out a very deep and heavy sigh and ran his hand through his hair. He could not hold himself in any longer.

“Aishlinn, I dinna ask any of them to dance with ye!” He began pacing around the small area in which they stood. “They danced with ye because yer a beautiful woman, no’ because I put them up to it!” He hadn’t meant to raise his voice and he was very glad to see that she did not cower in fear, as she would have done not too long ago.

He continued to pace. “If ’twere up to me, ye’d no’ have danced with any of them!”

Certain she was that it was just his brotherly affections for her that made him want to protect her, she walked to him and placed her hand upon his arm.

“Duncan, ’tis nothing to worry over.” She tried to get him to look at her. “Such an overly protective brother you are!”

His fierce blue eyes pinned her in place as he let out a very slow breath. “Aishlinn, I can assure ye my thoughts and feelings for ye are far from brotherly.” His jaw ached from clenching it. “They’re down right sinful.”

She was completely astounded by his remark and she knew not how to respond to it. Certainly he had consumed far too much ale. Her heart warned her against thinking anything else.

“Aishlinn, if I were to kiss ye right now ye’d know it no’ to be a brotherly kiss, but one filled with great passion and want of ye.”

Such a strange look he had upon his face. As she stood frozen, too flummoxed even to blush, she tried to make sense of what he was saying but her mind was unable to focus. Certainly he could not be serious that he wanted to kiss her.

’Twas then that he did the most remarkable thing. He took her face into his hands. He paused long enough to look into her eyes for just a moment before he bent and touched her lips with his own.

Good Lord above she could not breathe! ’Twas the most tender and gentle of kisses. Her knees buckled, her heart stopped beating and for the life of her she still could not breathe!

She melted into him them, returning his kiss as she wrapped her arms around his waist. Certainly it was instinct that kicked in, helping her to respond to his touch, for she had no experience to guide her. It seemed her heart was having a fierce battle with her stomach to see which could jump from her body first.

The kiss deepened becoming more passionate as the moments passed. He slid a hand around her neck and drew her in closer. He did not want this moment, the kiss or the way he felt to ever end. He wanted her more than he had ever wanted any woman or any thing in his life. His heart pounded ferociously when he felt her melt into his arms. It was nearly all he could do to keep from taking her then and there on the rooftop.

When she felt she was about to faint from lack of air she pushed herself away. She wondered how long it would be before she would regain the feeling in her legs. Her mind swirled with excitement, shock and wonder. Many a time in the past, she had wondered what her first kiss would be like. What the earl had done to her, as far as she was concerned, did not count. Duncan’s kiss was the kiss dreams were made of.

Standing there in the dark she looked at him, still quite surprised at what he had said and what they had just done. It took a moment or two before she found her voice.

“Why?” It was the only word she could find the strength to utter.

“Why what, Aishlinn?” he said as he smiled at her, wanting to take her in his arms again and to kiss her for the next fifty years or so. He, too, thought it a most splendid feeling when his lips touched hers. It was something he was quite eager to feel again.

“Why did you kiss me?”

Duncan smiled as he pulled her back to him and looked deep into her eyes. “There are many reasons, Aishlinn,” he told her.

“’Tis yer beauty. ’Tis the way yer dark green eyes get a fire in them when yer sore at me. ’Tis the way ye walk and talk and the way ye laugh. ’Tis the way ye treat everyone so kindly. ’Tis everything about ye, Aishlinn.”
