He drew back, then thrust forward again, deeper this time.

“Oh, my God.” She felt the start of an orgasm. “Harder.” He thrust harder and faster, surging into her again and again. She watched his face in the mirror, his features tense, concentrated. The pulsing need flooded through her, releasing ripples of pleasure, which grew to enormous waves of ecstatic delight.

“Oh God, oh God, oh God!” She bounced up and down, riding the intense waves, her breasts bobbing up and down.  She looked thoroughly wanton. Her voice rose in intensity with the mounting pleasure, which exploded through her like a supernova.

His hands cupped her breasts, plucking at her nipples, intensifying the cataclysmic orgasm. She threw her head back and moaned loudly. He groaned and pulsed inside her.  Slowly, she became aware of his hands around her waist, easing her back toward him. She leaned against his broad chest, resting her head in the crook of his neck, squeezing his cock with internal muscles.

“Mmm. That was spectacular,” she murmured.

He nuzzled her cheek.

“You got that right.” His lips nibbled behind her ear and she giggled at the delicate sensations quivering through her.  “I’ve really got to go.”

His cock eased out of her and he turned her around to face him. He gave her a deep, sound kiss, then held her close in his arms. She felt so loved. Once they parted, his gaze locked with hers, and he smiled.

“This has really been a pleasure, Aurora.”

She smiled. “Yes. It certainly has . . . Jake.”

He picked up her dress and undies from the elevator floor and handed them to her, then zipped up his pants and straightened his clothes.

“I’d really like to see you again.” He helped her fasten her bra.

She pulled on her dress and smoothed it into place. He adjusted it so that the top lay straight over her breasts, the touch of his fingers sending tingles across her skin.  She pushed the elevator button and they progressed downward.

“But then, it wouldn’t be a stranger fantasy, would it?” The doors opened and she stepped into the lobby. The desk clerk glanced up, then his gaze returned to his computer screen.

“I’ll walk you to your car.” His arm slid around her waist.

They walked down a hallway then out a side door.  “Are you saying you won’t see me again?” he asked as he followed her past the first row of cars.

She stopped at her small red Toyota Echo in the middle of the second row and unlocked the door.

“If I saw you again, then it wouldn’t be a one-night stand with a stranger. Now, if you were a pirate . . .” He grabbed her and dragged her into his arms for a passionate kiss.

“I can be a pirate.”

“And you’d be a damned fine one, too,” she responded breathlessly.

She glanced at her watch. Five forty-three.

“I’ve really got to go.”

She reached for the door handle, but he clutched her hand.

“Aurora, at least tell me your last name.”

She laughed. “You’re really into this, aren’t you?” She cupped his cheeks and kissed him sweetly. “Thank you so much for tonight. You don’t know what it means to me.” She climbed into her car and started the engine.  Jake watched her, feeling completely helpless. She didn’t want to see him again. His gut twisted into a knot.  She glanced at her watch. “If I hurry, I won’t be late. I hope your meeting in Toronto goes well.”

As he watched her drive away, he committed her license plate to memory, then her words surfaced to his consciousness.  How in hell did she know about his trip to Toronto?

SHE WAS LATE!

Jenna glanced at the calendar beside the fridge and counted again, knowing she wouldn’t find any change in her calculation, but doing it anyway.

Damn, definitely late.

Jenna shoved her hair back from her face as she slumped onto the cream and beige stool in front of her kitchen island and plunked her elbows on the oak countertop. She glanced at the clock over the doorway, counting the seconds to one minute, then she picked up the little blue wand sitting in the plastic stand beside her. She stared at it, blinking. A plus sign stared back at her.

She stuck the wand back onto the stand and dropped her face into her hands.

Oh, God, she was pregnant.

The phone rang and her back stiffened. She crossed to the desk by the fridge and plucked up the receiver.  “Hey, girl, how’s it going?” At the sound of Cindy’s cheerful voice Jenna broke into tears.

“Jenna, honey, what’s wrong?”

“I’m pregnant.” She sobbed.

“Pregnant? I thought you and Ryan weren’t. . . oh, except for last Saturday.”

“That’s right. Saturday. And you know me. I ‘m regular as clockwork. When my period didn’t start on Monday, I started to worry. I ‘m now four days overdue . . . and I ‘m never overdue.” She sobbed again.

“Except that one time last year,” Cindy reminded her.  Jenna started to pace. The spiral cord of the phone knocked over her pen mug, scattering pens across the desk. She set the black and gold cup upright and scooped up the spilled pens as she talked.

“Yeah, and I had that pregnancy test left over.” “I remember. You bought the double pack because it’s cheaper that way and I said you wouldn’t need another one.” “And you were wrong.” Jenna tapped a pencil on the desktop.

“I did suggest you put the extra money into condoms,” Cindy replied gently.

“I know. I got sloppy. But when you’re as regular as I am, it’s easy to believe it won’t happen.”

“That’s what you said last time.”

Jenna jabbed the pencil into the mug.

“And last time I was right,” she snapped.

“Jenna, whatever made you take the chance?” She sank onto the desk chair, scenes from that fabulous night skimming through her mind. She stared off into space.  “Cindy. Picture it. Five in the morning. Alone in an elevator with an incredibly hunky stranger.”

“Mmm. Yeah, okay.”

Jenna knew Cindy was imagining the scene, probably drooling.  Jenna’s own thoughts strayed back to the incredible experience and her insides quivered.

“We’re still talking about Ryan here, right?” Cindy confirmed.

“Of course we are!” Jenna replied.

“Okay, good. Well, you two are in a committed relationship.  He’ll probably want to take it to the next level. Things are working out between you two again, aren’t they?” Jenna thought about the months of neglect, then thought about the amazing fantasy he’d given her.

“He really made an effort last week, but is it enough?” Her face fell to her hands. Oh, heavens, this couldn’t be happening to her.

“Did he call you while he was away?”

“No.” Jenna twirled the phone cord around her finger. “He called me when he got back yesterday.”

“When are you seeing him again?”

“Tomorrow night.” Jenna tugged her finger free from the cord and watched it spring back and forth. “We’re having dinner together.”

“Are you going to tell him then?”

“Yes.”

“Will you marry him if he asks?”

Would she? Marriage didn’t necessarily solve everything.  If they got married but he still threw himself into his work, she might as well be on her own. Would he be emotionally and physically available to her, married or not?  “Jenna?”

She laid her hand on her stomach, imagining she could feel the stirrings of a new life inside her.

She wanted her baby to grow up with his father fully a part of his life. Not like hers. Her parents had divorced when she was only three and she remembered crying desperately, begging Daddy to stay. He’d held her and she remembered him shedding his own tears. Her older brother, Shane, had gone with their father. For a couple of years she saw them every weekend, but then Daddy’s work required him to move to Vancouver, on the far side of the country. After that, she only saw them a couple of times a year.

The void that had left in her life still haunted her. She couldn’t do that to her own child.

“Yes. I will.”

CHAPTER FOUR

RYAN KNOCKED ON Jenna’s apartment door, longing to see her face again. The face that filled his dreams every night, and his daydreams all day.

She opened the door and warmth flooded through him.  Her eyes shone brightly and her face seemed to glow. He’d definitely been away from her too long. The problem was he never wanted to be away from her at all. If he did what his heart dictated, he’d be with her all the time, neglecting everything else, and if he did that his business would slide. All the success he’d worked so hard to achieve would dissolve.  She had become a dangerous obsession. Staring at her sweet glowing face right now, however, he almost didn’t care.  And that scared him most of all.

“Hi.” She seemed a little reserved as she stepped back from the door to let him in.

She closed the door behind him and stood silently watching him. The rich blue sweater and snug black jeans she wore accentuated her lovely curves. He couldn’t believe such a beautiful woman chose to be with him. He took her hand and drew her toward him, then tipped up her chin and kissed her.

Her hands curled around his neck, her soft lips responsive under his.

The familiar stirrings rumbled within him but he stamped them down, not allowing them to overtake him. He’d had lots of practice over the past several months. If he. gave in to them, he’d have her clothes off and her fiat on her back within moments.  He longed to claim her, fast and hard, but that wouldn’t do justice to the feelings he had for her, and it wouldn’t be fair to her. She deserved a long, languorous session of making love, where he would worship her body from top to bottom, where he would make her feel every bit a woman and very thoroughly pleasured.

He drew back and smiled down at her.

“How’s my girl?”

“Fine,” she replied, but he sensed tentativeness in her voice. Was she still upset about his breaking their date?  He drew her into his arms and hugged her, loving the feel of her against his body. It had been so long since he’d felt her body naked against his. His groin tightened at the thought.  Tonight he would make love with her. Long and leisurely.  He’d been holding back too much. Putting his work ahead of her too much. But only because he had to know he could. He had to know that loving her wouldn’t totally destroy his way of life. He’d felt badly about missing the wedding. He’d done a lot of thinking while he’d been away and realized he wasn’t being fair to her. He had to find a better balance in his life. He had to find a way to love her, while still having time to build his business to the success he wanted. At least to the success of Jake’s company.

HE TOOK HER out to dinner. An intimate little restaurant with candlelight and Italian decor. Over dinner they talked about his trip, then he asked her how her project for Health and Welfare was going. She told him about the latest changes to the prototype system to handle DIN numbers for new drug releases, but generally she seemed a little distracted.  As dinner neared the end he found himself getting anxious to leave. Knowing what the night ahead held, he was eager to get her home and into bed.

Once back in her apartment, he followed her into the kitchen. He opened the top cupboard beside the stove where she kept the wine.

“Red or white?” he asked.

“Just pick whatever you’d like.”

He chose a bottle of his favorite Riesling wine.  She opened the fridge and pulled out a bottle of mixed citrus and berry juice.

“Are you having Sangria?”

If she had said so, he would have selected a red wine. She often took a glass of half wine and half juice—she liked this particular mix of fruit because it made a nice combination with wine—but she liked it only with red.

“No, I don’t feel like wine tonight, but you go ahead.” He placed the bottle on the island and she handed him the corkscrew. As he pulled out the cork, she retrieved two tall, pale blue stemmed glasses from a cupboard and filled one with juice.

He filled his glass with white wine and followed her into the living room. He turned on the stereo, selecting a station with soft music, then sat beside her on the couch, sliding his arm around her shoulders.

She shifted slightly.

“Ryan, we need to talk.”

His gut clenched immediately. In his experience, the only time a woman said those words was when she wanted to break up.

He stroked the hair back from her face.

“What is it, sweetheart?”

“You know, Suzie’s wedding was really important to me. I don’t think you understand how disappointed I was when you didn’t come.”

Oh, no. Here it comes.

“I know, sweetheart, and I ‘m really sorry, but—“ “But your business is important. I know that.” She rested her hands on her chest, over her heart. “But I should be important, too.”

The glimmer in her eyes, hinting at unshed tears, tore at his heart.

“You are. I—“

She waved her hand, cutting him off.

“Wait, I know you want to have your say—and I’ll listen to whatever you have to say later—but please just listen right now. I need to get this out.”

He took her hands, holding them between his own.
