He didn’t recognise it so he stayed schtum. Someone jumped into the van and began pulling the boxes aside. It was a red-faced man.
‘Jesus, Harry, I thought you were dead. I’m Tommy, you’re to come with me.’
Harry shook his hand and rose slowly, his back numb with pain.
‘Bumpy old ride, eh?’
‘Fuck me, mate, I was up and down like a yo-yo in a lift.’
‘Ha. Maybe we ought to sell out services to Alton Towers – King Billy’s wild ride.’
‘Thank fuck we didn’t crash, it’s no way to go with a case of pineapple chunks up your aris.’
‘Come on, mate, you’re on British soil again.’
Harry picked up his hold-all and followed Thomas out of the van. They were parked in front of a detached house overlooking the most breathtaking scenery Harry had seen since he’d last visited the Lake District.
‘Wow,’ he said simply.
‘Beautiful, isn’t it, and you ain’t seen nothing yet.’
Tommy led the way to the front door. ‘You’re to hole up here for a while, everything you need is here. Clothes, shoes, food, poteen, the works.’
Harry paused and looked back at the van. There was a black Merc parked next to it with two men inside. They nodded at Harry then looked away and chatted to the van driver.
‘My friend Dinger?’ asked Harry.
‘Will join you in a few days,’ Thomas replied. He rang the bell.
The door was opened by an attractive red-head. Once again Harry soaked up the view. She was slim, early-thirties, big blue eyes, curves in all the right places.
Thomas turned to him and smiled. ‘This is Margaret, Harry. Maggie to her friends. She’ll be taking care of you. As I said, Harry, everything you need for your comfort is here.’
