Two Roped and Ready

Witch Ilona Macska has no intention of waiting for the Fates to deliver her mates to her bed when the full moon triggers her fertility cycle. Her plan includes a trip to a nineteenth-century brothel and men lined up to find pleasure with her. But sometimes the best-laid plans don't work so out well…

With their pasts erased, Quayde Gallagher and Paxton Campbell have searched the Republic of Texas for clues about where they come from. After the accidental rescue of Ilona from a band of outlaws, a visit with her at the town bordello sparks more than memories.

When her family's enemy sends a tornado to destroy her, Ilona spells herself and her cowboys back home—but not before the ancient shifter poisons her. Can Quayde and PC heal Ilona with their growing love for her? And will their stolen memories return as they devote themselves to healing her?

Chapter 1

Patience isn’t a virtue. It’s a pain in the backside.

It was also the name of her soon-to-be employer in a small town in the newly independent Republic of Texas—Ilona Macska’s destination. She hiked up her long skirt and continued walking toward the indistinct outline of Encanto on the horizon. With the lowering sun at her back, she limped along the barely visible wagon trail, debating taking off her stiff button-up boots. Her research had revealed a moderate risk of black widow and rattlesnake bites, but they probably wouldn’t hurt any worse than the aching blisters on both of her heels and a couple of toes. Two days of breaking in the new shoes had damaged her feet much more than it had softened the leather.

Darn that inaccurate map.
The transportation spell had landed her over a mile from her target. At least the incantation took her to what appeared to be the right time period. She hadn’t seen or heard a car, plane, or train in the ten minutes she’d been hiking east. No power lines, paved roads, or cell phone towers—only stunted trees, yucca plants, and cacti as far as the eye could see.

Don’t forget the endless carpet of dead grass.
The year she’d chosen had to have been the driest in years since the area near San Antonio usually sported green grass in late November.

The only advantage of materializing this distance from town was the reduced chance that her family’s enemy would find her before she carried out her plan. Kazmer probably didn’t expect anyone to have the courage to leave the estate after his last attack, having nearly killed her cousin Jolán and her mates. The earthquake he’d caused had made the framing of the new wing collapse into a giant-size game of pick-up sticks. Luckily, the trio had escaped injury, and the ancient shifter had been dispelled with a chant powered by fifteen full-fledged witches.

Ilona hadn’t been one of them. Her twenty-first birthday had come almost four months later. She’d had lots of time to plan, though. She had no intention of sitting around waiting for her mates to show up on their own. The Fates had never failed to produce the men destined to join with the women in her family, but Ilona wasn’t about to rely entirely on destiny when her brain could handle the task.

Since the last five of her sisters in witchcraft had ended up with two men instead of one, she’d set her plans accordingly. The odds favored another threesome. Hopefully, no one at The Wyndham House would question her preference for the kinkier side of sex. Then again, prostitutes got paid to please their customers, so the chances of raised eyebrows were slim.

A wisp of hair fluttered in her peripheral vision, and she swept her hand over her cheek, pushing the stray strand toward her loosening braid. Dust clung to every inch of her skin and clothing, but she refused to complain about her plight. Traipsing through the wilds of Texas to find her mates beat sulking in her new suite of rooms at the Macska mansion. Soon, she’d have her choice of men, all hoping for a come-hither smile and an hour with the newest whore at Patience Wyndham’s brothel.

Not that Ilona thought having sex would make her a whore. No, that was opinion of puritanical, self-righteous prudes. Women who knew nothing about their bodies and the wonderful sensations to be enjoyed and men who thought they could fuck before matrimony but wanted their brides untouched.

Ha!
Ilona might be a virgin, but a year of Macska education had taught her more about sexual pleasure than most people probably learned in a lifetime. She would likely be the teacher, and that was fine with her—especially after she used the ingenious incantation she’d created to make sure men with STDs and the like didn’t get near her bed. While she hardly expected to find any inexperienced customers among those frequenting a bordello, at least she wouldn’t catch a nasty disease or acquire a community of parasites.

She looked over her shoulder as distant hoofbeats sounded behind her. Caressing the pistol belted to her waist, she slowed her gait and moved off the faint trail. Time to load, in case she needed backup.

Remember the instructions.
Withdrawing the weapon from the belt with her right hand and a paper cartridge from her pocket with her left, she let out a calming breath.
Tear the powder end of the cartridge open with your teeth. Pour a small amount in the priming pan. Close the frizzen.

She glanced up to gauge how much time she had left. A brown cloud hovered on the horizon.

Tip up the barrel and pour the remainder of the black powder inside. Push the rest of the cartridge into barrel, ball end first. Ram into place and then replace the ramming rod into the guides.
If the need arose, she only had to aim, cock the hammer, and pull the trigger.
And pray to the Goddess.

The thundering rhythm drew closer, and she almost cursed her decision to come to the nineteenth century without a horse. She wouldn’t endanger one of the mares by bringing an animal with her, though. One more thing she didn’t need to have to worry about.
