CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

What did one say to their ex when he got down on one knee at his wedding and apologized then begged for forgiveness? Nothing, they apparently just let their secret husband do the talking.

“I suggest you back away." Jake said as he suddenly appeared beside them and Kaycee gaped at him for she hadn't even seen him in the church until now.

“Marry me, Kaycee." Rob begged grabbing her hand and Kaycee didn't think she could look any more shocked if she tried.

“Hard for her to do when she's already married to me," Jake declared and Kaycee felt herself blush from head to toe as all eyes turned to her including her stepmother and father's accusing ones. Apparently she no longer had a "secret" husband.

“You're married?" Rob demanded looking hurt which surprised her because he was so self absorbed she'd assumed it was impossible to hurt him.

“Excuse me." she said in answer as the sickness reappeared and she yanked her hand from Rob and ran back down the aisle hoping that she wouldn't humiliate herself further.

It was fifteen minutes later that Jake found her slumped on a bench outside the church. She had managed to keep her small breakfast down, but barely and she knew she must look like hell but Jake didn't seem to care as he sat next to her with a sigh.

“I can't seem to leave you for a second without someone declaring their love for you," Jake said after the silence dragged on and Kaycee turned to glare at him through bloodshot eyes.

“At least someone wants to," she answered and he frowned.

“I'd like to remind you that it was your idea to spend some time apart," he reminded her and Kaycee's gaze narrowed.

“I suggested time apart not a month long vanishing act," she fumed and Jake gave another sigh.

“I'm sorry," he offered and Kaycee shrugged like she didn't care though really she was wondering where the hell he had been.

“Where were you?" she asked quietly and he went strangely silent. It went on for so long that she lifted her gaze to him and found him staring off in to the distance with a a frown.

“I can't tell you," he said and Kaycee stared at him in shock. She hadn't seen him in a month and that was his explanation?

“You got a phone call and vanished. Who was the call from?" she asked and again he shook his head.

“I can't tell you,"

“You've been gone a month and you can't tell me?" she demanded noting how tired he looked.

“I'm sorry, Kaycee. I'd tell you if I could but I can't," he said and Kaycee was stunned. He was the one who had wanted their marriage to work and now here he was practically lying to her.

“Okay," she said slowly as she got to her feet.

“Where are you going?" Jake asked and she gave him a pointed look.

“Home." she snapped before she turned and stormed away without a single glance back.

Kaycee arrived home to find a surprise waiting for her!

Sarah, complete with wedding dress was waiting on the steps leading up to her apartment. She looked a mess with her make-up smeared all over her face, her hair a mess and tears still running down her cheeks.

“I didn't know where else to go.” she sobbed and Kaycee took pity on her as she let them both in to her apartment.

“Drink?" Kaycee offered but before she could put the kettle on Sarah had raided the fridge and was pulling out a bottle of wine which she poured in to two glasses before Kaycee could stop her.

“Here," Sarah said handing over a glass which Kaycee regarded carefully.

“I'm not in the mood for alcohol," Kaycee lied and Sarah narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

“Not in the mood for alcohol after the day we've had? Oh my god you're pregnant." Sarah said in shock and Kaycee stared at her in horror.

“What? No, I just don't want alcohol." Kaycee tried but her sister wasn't having any of it.

“It all makes sense now. How quiet you've been lately and how you're always feeling sick. The weird behavior and lack of sleep," Sarah said as though she hadn't heard her denial and Kaycee began to panic.

“I'm not pregnant, I can't be." Kaycee said and Sarah stared at her.

“Have you taken a test?" she asked and Kaycee shook her head slowly. She didn't add that she had been too scared to take a test to confirm her worst fears.

“I bought one but I couldn't face doing it," Kaycee confessed and Sarah smile at her. Apparently her own heartbreak was forgotten as she dragged Kaycee to the bathroom and practically shoved her inside.

“Take the test." she called through the door and Kaycee frowned at the closed door as she collected the pregnancy test from where she had hidden it.

It was while she was waiting for the result to come up that Kaycee actually thought about what this would mean. If she was pregnant it would be a disaster because her and Jake could barely even make it an hour without arguing. Add a baby in to the mix and their whole relationship could fall apart. She had no doubt that Jake would demand she stay with him for the sake of their child but it would be an unhappy marriage that they would be forced to stay in. But what if she wasn't pregnant? Surprisingly that thought upset her as well. She had gotten used to the idea of having a baby even though she dreaded it and if it turned out she wasn't carrying Jake's child then she didn't know how she would feel.

“Is it done?" Sarah called through the door and Kaycee took a deep breath as she picked up the pregnancy test.

“Yes," she answered as her heart sank.

“Well? Are you pregnant?"

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“Kaycee?” Sarah called through the door and she jumped

“I’m coming out,” Kaycee called as she hid the test then took a deep breath before letting herself out the bathroom.

Sarah was stood in her bedroom nervously nibbling at her lower lip and Kaycee’s gaze went straight to the phone clutched in Sarah’s hand like a lifeline.

“Well?” Sarah asked her eyes wide.

“Who were you calling?” Kaycee asked instead wondering who exactly her sister could have been blabbing to.

“What? Oh, nobody. I was just checking my messages,” Sarah said making Kaycee frown at her suspiciously.

“You were checking your messages?” Kaycee asked in disbelief and Sarah gave her a tight smile.

“Yeah, I just wanted to make sure that everyone wasn’t too worried about me. But this isn’t about me, this is about you. So, am I about to be an aunt?” Sarah asked as her mascara streaked face pinched in worry.

“Er, No! It was negative. I’m not pregnant!” Kaycee informed her sister whose face lit up.

“Oh. I guess you and Jake got lucky this time,” Sarah offered and Kaycee froze.

“How did you know Jake was the father?” Kaycee asked as she thought back and realized that Sarah hadn’t been there when everything was revealed. So, how did she know about their secret relationship?

“Erm, well I figured, I mean you guys have been spending a lot of time together,” Sarah explained and Kaycee’s frown deepened.

“No, we haven’t. I’ve barely seen him, so how do you know about him?” she asked again and Sarah actually looked flustered.

“Um, It was on one of my messages, obviously. I mean how else would I have known? Everybody knows now.” Sarah said trying to brush it under the carpet and Kaycee stared at her in shock. For, sweet perfect little Sarah was lying. Her own stepsister was lying to her face. The question though was why?

“That must have been it. So, what are you doing here again?” Kaycee asked for it had never been in Sarah’s nature to come crawling to her for sympathy. She had always gone straight to her mother who had been full of it.

“I needed someone I trusted to talk to,” Sarah said but Kaycee noticed that she couldn’t look her in the eyes and was acting suspiciously.

“What did you need to talk to me about?” she asked and Sarah hesitated.

“The thing is, I think I’m in love,” Sarah said and Kaycee frowned as she thought back to the ugly scene that had taken place only hours ago.

“I don’t think that someone in love leaves their man at the alter,” Kaycee offered and Sarah laughed.

“No, I mean I think I’ve fallen for someone else,” she said and Kaycee froze in shock.

“Who?” she asked wondering who could have possibly turned her sister’s head and how she could have taken Kaycee’s boyfriend from her only to ditch him a few weeks later.

“I can’t tell you,” Sarah said and Kaycee’s inner alarm went off.

“Why can’t you tell your own sister? Is it someone I know?” she asked and Sarah once again looked uncomfortable.

“It’s someone close to you who I don’t think you would really approve of. I just wanted your advice. Do you think it’s too soon to move on from Rob?” she asked and Kaycee stared at her like she had just grown a second head. Someone close to her but she wouldn’t tell her who? And too soon to move on from Rob? It had barely been three hours.

“I think it would be a little too soon, considering that you only just broke up,” Kaycee offered ignoring her own behavior the month before.

“Well, I guess we’d have to keep it a secret for a bit longer. It’s not like he hasn’t been in a secret relationship before,” Sarah said and Kaycee’s chest suddenly felt tight.

“How long have you been seeing him?” she asked and Sarah gave a small laugh.

“About four weeks. I know, I should have called the wedding off sooner, but he was with someone else and I didn’t know if it was going to go anywhere. But now I know it is and I want everyone to know. Well, not right now obviously,” Sarah said with a dreamy look on her face and Kaycee had finally had enough.

It was clear to her now what Sarah was talking about. All the baby talk? Obviously she hadn’t wanted Kaycee to be pregnant. And she’d been with the guy for four weeks who was in a secret relationship? It was all clear now. She wasn’t content with stealing Rob, now she’d stolen Jake as well.

“You know? You should stay here for a while until it all blows over,” Kaycee offered and Sarah smiled at her.

“Aww, that’s sweet Cee. But it only has one room, where would you sleep?” she asked and Kaycee gave a tight smile.

“I’m actually going away for a while,” she replied and Sarah smiled like the cat that got the cream.

“Well, have a good time,” she offered and Kaycee turned without a word to go and pack.

What she needed was some time away from everyone and everything. That was clearly the reason she hadn’t been able to stop thinking about Jake, because she was surrounded by reminders. She really needed some time to think about things, including her future and what she was going to do about the giant lie she had told Sarah.

An image of that pregnancy test flashed back in to her mind including the blue line that confirmed her suspicious and flipped her world upside down.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

Kaycee almost made it away without incident!

She made it all the way out to her car before someone stopped her, and it was the one person that she had been dreading seeing.

“Jake!”

He was leaning nonchalantly against her car as though he had somehow known that she would be going away. Which made complete sense, she realized considering that Sarah had probably text him to say she was on the move.

“You ran off before we got the chance to talk,” he said in that deep timbre of his that made her heart flutter even though she knew it shouldn’t. He just looked so good in that suit.

“I didn’t think we had anything left to say to each other,” Kaycee said coolly trying to remind herself that he was cheating on her and that she had no reason for her heartbeat to be quickening.

“I assure you, love. There are a lot of things that need saying. But not here,” Jake said firmly as he grasped her arm and before she could protest he had mover her away from her car and in to his own, sliding her case effortlessly in to the back seat.

“I have somewhere to be,” she complained and Jake spared her a glance before he started the engine and began driving, to where she had no idea.

“Wherever it is, I’m sure it can keep until we’ve had our little chat.” Jake said calmly and Kaycee frowned for what could they possibly have to talk about? Unless he was going to confess his secret relationship with her sister, or else Sarah had found the pregnancy test and knew the truth. Which would mean that Jake knew the truth and that didn’t bear thinking about.

“Where are you taking me?” Kaycee asked after twenty minutes of driving in silence. She was too exhausted to argue and had decided to just go along with it; after all they both knew that Jake would get his own way in the end. That was the reason she had decided not to tell him about the baby until she knew what she was going to do. He would either insist they stay married and raise the baby together or he would end up married to Sarah and raising her child. Either way it would all be his decision and she would have no say in it whatsoever.

“There’s something I want to show you,” he said in answer and they lapsed in to silence again. Kaycee’s exhaustion caught up with her and she was almost asleep when the car suddenly stopped and when she opened her weary eyes she found that they were outside a large flashy hotel.

“Where are we?” she asked looking round in confusion and he grinned down at her.

“My newest hotel,” he told her proudly and Kaycee frowned but didn’t have time to dwell on it as Jake opened her door before handing his keys over to a valet. He ushered her straight in to the hotel past the reception and over to a private elevator where he materialized a key that let them up to the penthouse suite.

It was an amazing suite! Even for someone whose father owned a hotel chain. His hotels were nowhere near this amazing and Kaycee could say without a doubt that she had never been in a more incredible room in her life.

It was bigger than her entire apartment and just from the lounge area they walked in to she could tell that this was not just a run of the mill hotel room. The carpet was black and so soft that it felt like you were walking on air while the walls were painted a soft white that made the room seem more friendly. The furniture consisted of a matching sofa and chair that looked so inviting in her current exhausted state. A few other pieces of furniture were littered around making the room look more homely and there was a laptop and some papers out suggesting that Jake had been spending a lot of time here.

“Wow!” Kaycee breathed as she looked around and her gaze went straight to the large windows across the room. Going over she gasped in delight at the sight of Vegas stretched out below her.

“You like it?” he asked as he slipped an arm around her slim waist and Kaycee stiffened hoping he wouldn’t feel anything different.

“It’s alright,” she replied coolly not wanting to admit that she was enchanted by it.

“Just alright?” he teased as he turned her round to face him and before she could utter a word his lips closed over hers and his tongue began a leisurely exploration that had her arching against him.

His kiss deepened and Kaycee was barely even aware when he unzipped her bridesmaid dress that she hadn’t yet changed out of and let it fall to her feet in a pool of silk leaving her in just her underwear and a disadvantage to him. Pushing his jacket off him Kaycee pulled him closer as she ripped open the buttons of his shirt needing to feel his bare skin.

“We were supposed to be talking,” he said as he pulled away for a second while his eyes roamed leisurely over her slim body. He frowned at the realization that she had lost weight since he had been away. Her stomach was a little bigger but the rest of her was barely skin and bones. It made him wonder what she had been doing to herself.

“Talking’s overrated!” she murmured as she noticed where his gaze was and kissed him again to distract him.

Jake lifted her high against him and she wrapped her legs around his waist as he carried her towards the bedroom. She gasped when she saw how luxurious it all was but didn’t have time to look any more as Jake lavished small kisses down her body making her quiver with excitement.

She removed his shirt then slowly unfastened his trousers fumbling a little with the belt. Jake took pity and slipped off the rest of his clothes before stripping hers off and leaving them both naked. Kaycee grew bolder this time and she cupped his manhood eliciting a gasp from him. Stroking his length she couldn’t help the satisfied smile that crossed her face when he groaned.

“You’ll pay for that, witch,” he whispered before he launched an assault of his own that created havoc with his senses until she begged for him to take her. In one swift move he plunged in to her and they both spiraled higher and higher until they fell apart in each others arms.

Kaycee meant to leave but she was so exhausted that she couldn’t help it when she fell asleep in his arms. She wasn’t aware of Jake stroking a strand of hair out of her face or the tender way he placed a gentle kiss on her temple.

Kaycee wasn’t aware of anything until she awoke the next morning to find herself alone in the bed. She could hear the shower running and making a quick decision she slipped from the bed and pulled her dress on before leaving the hotel and Jake.

There was a bit of déjà vu as she left Jake once again but Kaycee couldn’t face seeing him after what had happened. She was supposed to hate him for what he was doing but instead she couldn’t help but fall apart at his slightest touch.

It had been last night that had made the decision for her. She had to go away until the baby was born, longer maybe. She needed to make a life for herself that didn’t include Jake because otherwise she wouldn’t be able to help herself from falling for him all over again.
