Keisha considered everything. “She said no man would want a part of that.”

“So you both expect Steve to bail, huh?” Stone snorted. He was starting to think Alexis knew less about men than Keisha did. “He won’t. If anything he’ll be more determined to hang around.”

“You’re serious?”

“Steve isn’t a dummy. And after a month of celibacy, it’s obvious he cares for her. Otherwise he’d have moved on a long ago.” Stone touched her cheek. “I’m not saying he won’t date. Or find relief somewhere, but he’ll want to help out if he can. Count on it.”

She bit her lip. The tears glistening in her eyes caught and held the moonlight. “You think Alexis is doing the right thing?”

“Absolutely. Family is there for her family, always.”

“You’d have felt the same about my mother? About the time I had to give to her?”

Stone caught her shoulders and rolled her beneath him. “You did the right thing, honey. The only thing you could do. For my family, I’d do the same.” He didn’t know if he’d have been able to wait, but he did know one thing—he was glad David hadn’t. “Alexis and her nephew will have a rough road ahead of them. But we’ll be here for them too. No matter what happens, you will never be alone.

“Because I love you.” She wrapped her arms around him. “I’m so glad you were my first and I waited of you.”

“And your last.” Stone kissed her. “And best of all, your one and only.”
