‘I’ll be right down.’

He must have run down the stairs because
within a minute, he was standing in front of me. And he was
smiling.

‘You got my letter,’ he said.

‘And you got mine.’

‘I kind of like the formal correspondence,’
I said. ‘Can we keep doing it?’

‘Are we going to have a lot to explain in
the future?’

‘Definitely not of that magnitude,’ I said,
laughing. ‘Listen, I was such an idiot-’

‘I’m so sorry!’ he said at the same
time.

‘Do we deserve to be forgiven?’

He considered my question. ‘Well, I know how
I feel about you, and I know I’ll never be stupid enough to risk
losing you again. So you’ll get nothing but complete honesty from
me. Even if it means telling you things you don’t want to
hear.’

‘Like when my outfit makes my arse look
big?’’

‘I said I was honest, not stupid.’

‘So now what happens?’

‘I guess we should kiss and make up.’

I nodded, and he put his arms around me. ‘I
promise I will never lie to you,’ he said. ‘Even if your outfit
makes your arse look big.’

A tear or two mixed with the rain as we
kissed in Soho Square. I felt like I’d awakened from a nightmare to
find that everything was going to be okay after all.

‘Let’s get out of this rain,’ I said.

We hurried towards the pub around the
corner. As he held open the door for me, he said, ‘After you,
Annabel.’

‘Thank you, Jeremy.’

He grabbed my hand and we made our way to
the bar.
